Theme parks/Amusement parks
[edit]There are two categories that are very similar, Amusement parks and Theme parks, while the Amusement parks category bizarrely contains subcategories like Theme parks in Japan. There seems to me to be a bit of a mess which I would like to help sort out. The Amusement park article says that the names 'Amusement park' and 'Theme park' are often used interchangably, which is true, so should we really be using two categories or should there be just a single category? I realise I might be stirring up a can of worms here, but anything that could help sort out the current mess is probably helpful. --ericthefish 16:51, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
- I can see some sense in using the two categories. Theme parks tend to be big parks that usually advertise themselves as a theme park and would be recongnised as a theme park by the general public. Amusement parks is a wider category (of which Theme Parks is a sub-category). Amusement parks can include smaller parks with a rides that just aren't big enough to be considered a Theme Park. I would be reluctant to lose the Theme parks categories because that is what people are likely to search by. However, using just Theme Park would remove a number of smaller parks from the categories.
- Having said that the current set up is a mess. Amusement Parks seems to be a supercategory containing theme parks as a sub category. But that isn't always the case and the Theme Parks categories list some amusement parks under them and vice versa.
- I think a degree of initial tidying is needed to make the layout more consistent. We can then decide if it works or the two should be merged. --MarkS (talk) 14:06, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
- After a bit of a look round for any other discussion on this I haven't found anything conclusive. However, the following links might be of use and save somebody else having to hunt around: Disney Theme Parks, Theme Parks v Amusement Parks, More disney based comment --MarkS (talk) 19:46, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
