The Catholic Church is organised on an all-island basis in Ireland. The boundaries of the dioceses pre-date the establishment of the two modern states on the island. Some dioceses are located exclusively in the Republic of Ireland while others are located exclusively in Northern Ireland. One archdiocese, and three dioceses straddle the border.
