Cartoon pornography is the portrayal of illustrated or animated fictional characters in erotic or sexual situations. This includes but is not limited to parody renditions of famous cartoons and comics.

Cartoon parodies

Some artists use parodies of pre-existing cartoon or comics characters, drawing for example Walt Disney's famous princesses, television characters, or comic book characters in various states of undress and possibly engaged in sexual activity.

Other favorite sources of pornographic cartoon parodies include Warner Brothers cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, and Pepe LePew; Disney cartoon characters; newspaper comic strip characters such as Dennis the Menace, the Family Circus, and Luann; and such television or movie characters The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Sailor Moon, Family Guy, The Simpsons, Futurama, Star Trek, Star Wars, Naruto, Danny Phantom, Totally Spies, Dragon Ball, and lately, Teen Titans, and Avatar: The Last Airbender, Ben 10 and South Park

Other artists, such as Jab, use their own characters and create erotic comics.

Non-parody artists

Artists who draw pre-existing characters do not generally have any special notability among the cartoon pornography community, in contrast, some of the artists who draw their own characters, such as Alazar, Bill Ward, Kevin J. Taylor, or John Willie, have gained a cult fan base.

The animation duo Sven & Angus (Rum Runners, creators of Brickhouse Betty), have gained such a huge fan base that they have even won an AVN Award, the "Oscars" of the adult entertainment industry. These cartoons are often found on entertainment sites aimed at mature audiences.

Legal status of Cartoon Pornography

The legal status of pornography varies from country to country. In addition to the normal legal status of pornography, much cartoon pornography depicts potentially minor characters engaging in sexual acts. One of the primary reasons for this may be due many cartoons being at least partially aimed young adults or even children, and therefore the characters themselves are not mature adults. Cartoon pornography does not always have depictions of minors in sexual acts or situations, but that which does may fall under the jurisdiction laws concerning child pornography.

The United States

In the United States, cartoon porn that does not contain parodies or depictions of minors generally falls under the category of the First Amendment, and is therefore protected by law. For more information on general legality of pornography, see Pornography in the United States.

Cartoon parodies

Cartoon pornography containing parodies normally falls under Parody status and is by large protected legally when no sale or profit is involved. The legal viability of making of profit through cartoon pornography is not clear, as many large cartoon companies such as Disney or Warner Brothers have issued Cease and Desist letters to individuals and organizations producing cartoon parody pornography, but thus far no court cases in the United States involving actual individuals versus these large companies have occurred. Therefore the status of whether an individual in the United States can safely make money through cartoon parody artwork, and to what extent, is not yet clearly defined.

Cartoon pornography depicting minors or under-aged children

The legal status of cartoon pornography depicting minors in sexual acts or situations is somewhat complex. See legal status in the United States of Lolikon for more detailed history and information.

As of the PROTECT Act of 2003, the legal status cartoon pornography with minors has been more thoroughly addressed and refined than it was before under previous laws. From her summary and analysis of the Act by privacy lawyer Parry Aftab, it would seem that the new legislation affects cartoon pornography which is both "Graphic" and "Indistinguishable." Both of these words were clearly defined by legislators in the act. Simplified definitions referred to content which was visually viewable and which could not be readily distinguished by viewers as not containing depiction of real child.

The new act seemed to be primarily and rather specifically aimed at addressing realistic appearing computer generated depictions of minors in sexual situation or engaging in sexual act. The definition by law makers went on to state quite clearly: "This definition does not apply to depictions that are drawings, cartoons, sculptures, or paintings depicting minors or adults," U.S. Code, Title 18, Section 2256 [1].
