CIAO MALZ is a Brooklyn-based indie rock project by Filipino American multi-instrumentalist Malia DelaCruz,[1][2][3] in collaboration with James Chrisman of Sister. and Felix Walworth of Florist and Told Slant.[4][5][6] She is currently signed to Audio Antihero.[7][8][9]
Early life
[edit]Malia DelaCruz was born and raised in Waterford, Connecticut. She relocated to New York City in 2014 to attend St. John's University in Queens.[2][10][11]
Music career
[edit]DelaCruz started out in music collaborating with h. pruz, James Chrisman and Ceci Sturman, before eventually joining them as Sister.'s live bassist.[12][11][13]
She began writing their songs under the CIAO MALZ name in 2020, and played her first shows that year. She issued her first single, Always Be My Maybe on May 28, 2021,[14] and the song was played by WFUV when CIAO MALZ was featured as that day's NY Slice artist.[15]
DelaCruz continued to self-release new material, issuing Tracks, Circumstancey, To Go, Same Thing, and Pearl between 2021 and 2023.[3][16] In August 2023, DelaCruz recorded a cover of Frog's You Know I’m Down, which reached Frog's label, Audio Antihero. The label then offered to work with CIAO MALZ on the next EP.[3][17]
On November 15, 2024, CIAO MALZ released the Two Feet Tall single via Audio Antihero. The song received BBC airplay from Deb Grant and Tom Ravenscroft on BBC Radio 6 Music,[18] and Roddy Hart on BBC Radio Scotland,[19] in addition to national airplay in Europe from FM4 and Kosmos 93.6.[20][21] US stations like KEXP, KZSC, WMRE, and WMFO[22][23][24] also supported the single, in addition to international stations like Resonance FM, Canal Extremadura, and Apaçik Radyo.[25][26][27] The single also found support on internet radio stations Dandelion Radio[28][29] and Amazing Radio,[30][31] where it was added to the US C-List,[32] and placed in the station's charts.[33][34] On the single's release date, CIAO MALZ was featured by WFUV as their NY Slice artist for the second time.[35][36] Two Feet Tall also received positive reviews from Indie Shuffle, Muso's Guide,[37] God Is In The TV,[38][17][39] and numerous others.[40][41][42]
The Safe Then Sorry EP followed on December 6, 2024, after premiering with Under the Radar the day prior.[2] The EP was added to rotation by KEXP[1] and received radio support from stations like WMBR,[43] WRUV,[44][45] WSUM,[46][47][48] Radio Boise,[49] and WMFO.[50][24] The WMFO support included Two Feet Tall being included in the Tardis Jukebox Best of 2024 show on January 1 2025.[51][52]
The EP was praised in reviews from KLOF Magazine, The Alternative, God Is In The TV,[3][53][54] and others.[55][56][57] With the EP's release, CIAO MALZ also reached No.1 in both the Popular Now and Most Posted Artists charts on the Hype Machine blog aggregator.[58][59]
