Bijoy Ullas (Bengali: বিজয় উল্লাস) is a sculpture related to the Bangladesh Liberation War located in Kushtia. The construction of the sculpture started in 1995 at the initiative of Kushtia Municipality to commemorate the victory of the Liberation War.[1]

History

[edit]

In 1995, the then municipal chairman Anwar Ali informed the sculptor Mahabub Jamil Shamim about the plan to build a liberation war sculpture with an open platform in the open space in front of the municipality. Then sculptor Mahabub Jamil Shamim turned to engineer Rabiul Hussain. Later, engineer Rabiul Hussain provided the design of the present sculpture and sculptor Mahabub Jamil Shamim started the construction work accordingly. After two years of construction, the then chairman of Kushtia Municipality Anwar Ali opened the sculpture to the general public on March 19, 1997.[1]

Significance

[edit]

The sculpture was built to commemorate the victory of the Bangladesh Liberation War . Lalon's devotees and followers are busy dancing and singing to the tune of Ektara, Dotara, Dhol and Flute . In front of him, the freedom fighter defeated the enemy with a stun gun in his hand.

Structure

[edit]

Rods, cement, mosaic, terracotta and various metal materials have been used in the construction of the sculpture. Various traditions of village-Bangla, including the liberation war, have been highlighted on the lower three sides of the stage or altar through the fixed images of marble stones.[1]
