Bellevue Kandy
Belinda Kikusa Kandy (born 12 October 1980), known professionally as Bellevue Kandy is a Congolese actress, director, producer, and screenwriter.
Early life
[edit]Belinda Kikusa Kandy was born on October 12, 1980, in a maternity hospital in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. [1] Her father, Joseph Kandy, died when she was just three months old, leaving her and her eight siblings in the care of their mother, Luisa Nzumba Kinduelo, who also died in 2016.
Bellevue graduated from the National Institute of Arts (INA), where she remained dedicated to her studies, striving for success. Her commitment paid off, as she completed her education with commendable grades before embarking on her professional journey.[2]
Career
[edit]Following her studies, Bellevue Kandy began her career with the "Simba" group, led by President Elombe Sukari, a prominent figure in the history of Congolese theatre associated with the "Salongo" group. She has remained loyal to this artistic lineage ever since.[3] [4] Groupe Simba comprised a talented ensemble of comedians and actresses, featuring notable names such as Yandi Mosi, Lule, Décor Ilonga, Milo (Mimie Loleka), Lea Ndaya, Ursule Peshanga, Maman Kalunga, and Bellevue. [5] [6] [7] [8] Mimie Kabongo, Maman Kalunga, and Décor are featured in the Congolese sitcom Chez Coco. [9] [10] [11]
The experience gained at Elombe Sukari revealed Bellevue's remarkable talent for screenwriting.[12] This marked the onset of a new chapter in her acting career. [13] Rather than forming a collective, she chose to unite skilled actors under her brand, "Bel'Art". The financial support provided by former first lady Marie-Olive Lembe Kabila, the spouse of Congolese President Joseph Kabila, significantly advanced Bellevue's career.[14]
Since then, her career has skyrocketed. Central to her productions is the emphasis on conveying a meaningful message, a focus that is frequently overlooked by other filmmakers. This dedication has enabled her to gain international recognition, leading to collaborations with prominent Ivorian figures such as Michel Gohou, Michel Bohiri, and Clemantine Papouet in the production Ma Grande Famille. [15]
In her productions, Bellevue consistently aims to deliver educational messages. Notable works include titles such as Photographer, Lie, It is mine, Impure Heart, Spiritual Claims, family bond, love of money, AS Card, Cabal, and Attention. [16] Bellevue has partnered with Ursule Peshanga, recognized for her work in the 2017 film The Daughter of Her Father, on projects including Surprise Peshanga (2019) and Mabe Ekoti (2017). [17]
Each evening starting at 4:30 p.m., thousands of viewers tune in to Bellevue TV to enjoy performances by a range of talented actors and actresses, such as Maman Top, Etoile, Annie Biasi, Milo 50, Lea Ndaya, Aziza, Carine Pala, Esther Ngalasi, Cardozo, Sylvie, Naomie, Guetty, Mimie Kabongo, Mutbo Manoka, Pierrot Ndombasi, Dacosta, Vinny, Blaise, Décor, Jr., Junior, and Aida Gladys.[18]
At the 2021 Nzonzing Awards event, held at the Memling Hotel in the Gombe commune, Bellevue received recognition for her achievements in the female elite, legend, and expertise categories. [19] In 2022, Bellevue received nominations for Best Actress and Best Director for her work in the films "Impuissance" and "Famille Honorable" at the Nzonzing Awards.[20][21]
Currently, Bellevue leads Bellevue TV, Kandy Star TV, and Bel'Art Production. [22] Additionally, she owns a restaurant located near the Kimpwanza roundabout in the Kasa-Vubu commune of Kinshasa.
Personal Life
[edit]Bellevue is a Christian. She asserts that her motivation for pursuing an acting career is derived from God. Bellevue shares a close friendship with Congolese gospel artist L'Or Mbongo. [23] [24] Bellevue seldom participates in interviews, as she relies on her team to communicate on her behalf. She is neither married nor a parent.
