Background
[edit]In 1376, Tokhtamysh, with the support of Timur, conducted three unsuccessful campaigns against the territory controlled by Urus Khan and his sons. In the first campaign, he killed Kutlug-Bug, the son of Urus Khan, but was defeated. In the second campaign, he was defeated by Toktakia but miraculously survived. In the third campaign, Tokhtamysh was once again defeated by Timur-Malik but miraculously survived again.
Letter from Urus Khan to Tamerlane
[edit]Urus Khan sent envoys to Tamerlane demanding to hand over Tokhtamysh
«Toktamysh killed my son and, running away, came to your dominions; give me my enemy, if not, then, having appointed the place of battle, immediately come to battle»[1]
Battle
[edit]In 1376, in the autumn, the army of Urus Khan gathered near the city of Sauran, at which time Timur and his troops approached the vicinity of Otrar. Due to adverse weather conditions, there was a delayed general battle between the parties. In the course of small battles, Urus Khan's detachments inflicted several defeats on the commanders of Timur's troops. Having suffered significant losses in men, horses and supplies, Timur retreated to Samarkand and Kesh in the winter of 1376-1377. And in 1377 Urus Khan himself died.[2]
