The Battle of Booda-Cadde occurred on 18 July 2016, when forces from Puntland and Somaliland clashed in the Sanaag region of northern Somalia. The clash resulted in at least five soldiers being killed, including three Puntland soldiers and two high-ranking Somaliland officers. The battle was part of the broader ongoing conflict between Somaliland and Puntland over territorial disputes.
Background
[edit]The Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn regions have been the subject of disputes between Somaliland and Puntland for years. Tensions had been rising ahead of the clash, with both sides involved in occasional skirmishes. On 18 July, hostilities erupted when Puntland and Somaliland forces confronted each other near Booda-Cadde.[1]
Clashes
[edit]During the battle, Somaliland forces captured Mohamed Farah Adan, a prominent member of the Puntland administration. Adan, who was the former vice Minister of Justice and a current member of the Puntland parliament, was detained for a week in Erigavo before being released the following month.[2][3]
Aftermath
[edit]The battle left five soldiers dead, with Puntland suffering multiple casualties and Somaliland losing two high-ranking officers. Despite the casualties, Somaliland forces successfully captured a key political figure from Puntland. The conflict further intensified the long-standing territorial disputes between the two regions.[2][3]
