An Music School (アン・ミュージック・スクール) was a private music school based in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 1967 by jazz pianist Masahiko Satoh, the school closed on December 31, 2019.[1]
History
[edit]An Music School was founded as an institution to retrain professionals, with Satoh favoring the educational guidelines of the Berklee College of Music, but the school subsequently enrolled a broad range of students, from beginners to professionals.
Overview
[edit]With individually tailored lesson programs, one-on-one teaching formed the main part of education at the school.
The school year was divided into two semesters. Lesson schedules were tailored to the individual, and school attendance was at the student's own pace and convenience. There was no credit system. After two years of attendance, students received a graduation certificate. If a student wished to continue their studies after graduation, they could become a research student and extend their studies indefinitely.
The age of students varied widely, and many had jobs or were housewives. The student age bracket was high compared to other music schools because it was common for music college graduates to attend An Music School.
