Alec Michael Torelli (born March 24, 1987), is an American professional poker player from Orange County, California, known for competing in high-stakes no-limit Texas hold 'em cash games and winning over $2,200,000 in poker tournaments.[1][2] Torelli is also the founder of the poker training site Conscious Poker,[3] which offers online courses and private coaching, and the author of The Poker Coach: Practical Strategies to Manage Your Bankroll and Outsmart Your Opponents.[4]

Early life and education[edit]

Torelli graduated from Woodbridge High School (Irvine, California) in 2005 and became an Eagle Scout at the age of 17. He then attended Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas on a scholarship, but dropped out during his freshman year to pursue a professional poker career.

Poker career[edit]

Torelli began playing poker in 2003 in home games and local casinos, and made the Final Table of the Ultimate Bet Aruba Poker Classic[5] in 2006, taking home $39,730. In 2006, Torelli moved to Melbourne, Australia, where, in 2007, he won the Full Tilt Online Poker Series (FTOPS) Main Event, earning $288,000.[6] That same year, he became the 9th biggest winner on Full Tilt Poker, earning $1,105,857 in cash games.

After turning 21, Torelli moved to Las Vegas. During his first World Series of Poker (WSOP) series in 2008, he finished second in the $10,000 World Heads-Up Poker Championship event winning $336,896.[7] The next summer, he placed 6th in the $40,000 40th-anniversary WSOP event,[8] and 4th in the World Poker Tour Bellagio Cup V, cashing for $329,730 and $271,165 respectively[9][10] Later in the fall of 2008, Torelli became the only player in history to win back-to-back events at the Bellagio during the World Poker Tour Fiesta al Lago, winning $84,100 and $120,715.[11]

In 2009, Torelli was the first poker pro selected by Doyle Brunson to join the “Brunson 10,” representing Doyles Room poker site.[12]

From 2012 to 2015, Torelli lived in Macau, SAR and shifted his focus to cash games, competing at the nosebleed limits held at the Starworld and Wynn Macau.[13][14] Torelli has been featured on poker TV shows[15] and live streams, such as partypoker Big Game,[16] Poker Night in America,[17] Live at the Bike, at The Bicycle Hotel & Casino,[18] and Hustler Casino Live.[19]

Torelli returned to the tournament scene in 2023, finishing 11th out of 10,043 entrants in the World Series of Poker Main Event, earning $700,000.[20]

Sponsorships[edit]

Torelli was the first member of Doyles Room‘s group of sponsored pros “Brunson 10” from 2009 to 2010.[21] In 2013, Torelli served as an ambassador for PokerStars.it.[22][23][24] Torelli is currently an ambassador for Phenom Poker, a decentralized poker site, expected to launch in 2024.[25]

TV and media appearances[edit]

Alec Torelli made a cameo appearance in the Season 7 premiere of Entourage (American TV series).[26] He was also featured in the documentary A Kid’s Game: The Story of Online Poker[27] and appeared on Brain Games (2011 TV series) in 2020.[28] In 2017, Torelli was interviewed by Dr. Bobby Hoffman on the topic of Motivation.[29] This segment was then featured in Psychology Today[30] and included in Hoffman’s academic textbook, Motivation for Learning and Performance: Lessons from Leaders.[31]

In 2015, Torelli launched his YouTube channel, Conscious Poker, where he analyzes key hands from high-stakes games and answers questions from viewers.[32]

Public speaking[edit]

Torelli has given speeches on topics that stem from poker and apply to business, such as decision-making and taking calculated risk. He has spoken at University of Southern California (USC),[33] Cisco, The Women’s President’s Organization, War Room Mastermind and others.[34]

Controversy[edit]

In 2017, members of the 2+2 forum initiated a debate on whether or not Alec Torelli engaged in angle shooting during a hand played in Ep.4, S.5 of “Poker Night in America”,[35][36] that aired on CBS Sports Network the previous year. During the hand, two larger denomination chips totaling $10,000 were placed behind smaller denomination chips in Torelli's stack of poker chips. Poker etiquette and rules in casinos require that larger denomination chips have to be in plain view. This influenced Torelli's isolated opponent in the hand, Daniel Wolf, who ended up losing $10,000 more than he believed was at stake.[37] Later, Torelli posted a video on YouTube faulting his opponent for not knowing his chip stack size.[38] A year after the hand took place, professional poker player Doug Polk released a video questioning the ethics of the hand,[39] provoking a backlash on social media. Torelli responded on his YouTube channel[40] and in an interview on the “Nick Vertucci Show”.[36] Torelli was defended by poker professionals Daniel Negreanu,[41] Brian Rast[42] and Charlie Carrel,[43] who deemed the controversy to be disproportionate and unfair.

Personal life[edit]

Torelli is married, a dual citizen of the United States and Italy[44] and has visited over 50 countries.[44] He has practiced daily meditation for nearly 10 years.[45] Torelli runs a syndicate on the crowd funding platform AngelList called “WHealthier”, which invests in wellness companies.[46] Beyond poker, Torelli’s interests include travel, wellness, investing[44] and writing for poker news outlets such as “Bluff Magazine”,[47] “PokerNews”,[48] and “Cardplayer Magazine.[49]

  42. ^ @tsarrast (April 6, 2023). "I never watched the hand originally. After watching the full in-edited hand, really don't see how this is angling ever. Crazy this was a thing. Obviously a shitty spot, and people should always keep big chips out - but fwiw this happens regularly in cash games for various reasons and it usually isn't angling. Many people instinctively keep their big chips somewhere safe - which often isn't clearly visible to the entire table. You should always ask someone for a count before moving them all-in if you're not 100% sure more or less how much they have. Lesson learned the hard way for this guy". x.com.
