Adrian Stoicov (12 November 1967 – 15 March 2017) was a Romanian footballer who played as a left-back.[1][2][3][4]

Club career

[edit]

Stoicov, nicknamed "Bulgarul" (The Bulgarian) was born on 12 November 1967 in Deta, Romania, starting to play junior level football at ȘS Timișoara, moving afterwards at Politehnica Timișoara.[1][5] He started his senior career in 1986 at Divizia C club, Obilici Sânmartinu-Sârbesc.[1]

In 1987, Stoicov went back at Politehnica, making his Divizia A debut on 29 November in a 1–0 home loss to Universitatea Cluj.[1][2] At the end of his first season, Politehnica relegated but he stayed with the club, helping it promote back after one year.[1] He started playing in European competitions in the 1990–91 UEFA Cup where coach Constantin Rădulescu used him in four matches, as in the first round they got past Atlético Madrid with 2–1 on aggregate, being eliminated in the next round by Sporting Lisbon.[1][2][3][4][5][6] He helped the club reach the 1992 Cupa României final, coach Ion Ionescu using him all the minutes in the loss at the penalty shoot-out to Steaua București, Stoicov missing one of Politehnica's spot kicks.[1][2][3][5][7] He then participated with the club at the 1992–93 UEFA Cup edition where in the first round they faced Real Madrid, obtaining a 1–1 at Timișoara and losing with 4–0 on Santiago Bernabéu.[1][2][4][5][8]

Stoicov left Politehnica to go for the 1993–94 season at Progresul București.[1][2][5] He then returned to Politehnica for the 1994–95 Divizia B season, helping them promote to the first league.[1][5] He stayed in the beginning of the next season in Divizia B, playing one game for CFR Timișoara, afterwards going to play in the first league for Politehnica who relegated once again at the end of the 1996–97 season.[1][2] After one more season spent in Divizia B with The White-Purples, Stoicov went at third league team, UM Timișoara for the first half of the 1998–99 season, leaving for the second half to go play for Inter Sibiu, UM managing to promote to the second league without him.[1][2] He continued to play at Divizia B level at Sibiu and Cetate Deva until he ended his career in 2001.[1][2] Stoicov has a total of 217 appearances with three goals scored in Divizia A.[1]
