Adi Badri Temple
Adi Badri Temple is located 17 km from Karnaprayag and 3 km from Chandpur Garhi on the Haldwani road.[1] Its nearest pilgrimage place is Karnaprayag. 3 km ahead of Chandpur Garhi, you suddenly come across a group of ancient temples on the right side of the road.[2]

Legend has it that these temples were built by the Pandavas who came to Uttarakhand on the Swargarohini path.[3]
History
[edit]It is also said that these were built by Shankaracharya in the 8th century.[4] According to the Archaeological Survey of India, these were built between the 8th and 11th centuries by the Katyuri kings. For some years, the maintenance of these temples is under the Archaeological Survey of India.[5]
Originally there were 16 temples in the group, of which 14 survive.[6] The main temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is identified by its large size and built on a raised platform. A beautiful one metre high black Shaligram idol of the Lord in his Chaturbhuj (four-armed) standing form is housed inside the sanctum sanctorum. The doors of the Adi Badri temple are closed for the month of Paush and are opened on the day of Makar Sankranti.[7][8]
A small temple in front of it is dedicated to Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. Other temples in the group are dedicated to other deities such as Satyanarayan, Lakshmi, Annapurna, Chakbhan, Kuber (idolless), Ram, Lakshman, Sita, Kali, Shiva, Gauri, and Hanuman. These stone temples have intricate and detailed carvings and the motifs of the carvings on each temple are specific to that temple and different from the others.[9][10]
Worship is still performed here and the Vishnu temple is looked after by Chakradatta Thapliyal who hails from the nearby Thapali village. Brahmins from Thapali village have been the priests of this temple for the last nearly seven hundred years.[11]
