Abwaan Cabdi Muxumed Amiin (1935 – November 3, 2008) was a renowned Somali poet, playwright, actor, and political activist known for his significant contributions to Somali literature and arts.[1]

Early Life

Born in Gabiley, British Somaliland in 1935, Amiin grew up in a period marked by the struggle for Somali independence. His early exposure to the cultural and political climate of his time profoundly influenced his later works.

Career

Poetry and Drama

Amiin's poetry was deeply patriotic and often served as a critique of the political governance in Somalia. Some of his notable works include:

Dhibaatada - A play addressing the hardships faced by Somalis. Qorraxdaa - A poem reflecting on the sun as a metaphor for hope and enlightenment. Gabadhii Ciise - A drama that intertwines religious themes with Somali folklore.

He was not only a writer but also an actor, often performing his own works, which helped in spreading his messages through both written and oral traditions.

Political Activism

Amiin was an active participant in Somalia's independence movement. His political engagement didn't end with independence, as he continued to critique post-colonial governments. His outspokenness resulted in his arrest in 1964 and again in 1989 under the dictatorial regime of Siad Barre.

Imprisonment and Exile

His critiques of the government led to his imprisonment, where he continued to write, using his poetry as a form of resistance. After his release, he lived in exile in Kenya, where he continued his literary work until his death.
