A Family in the Stone Age (French: Une famille à l'âge de pierre) is a 1892 oil on canvas painting by the Academic artist Emmanuel Benner, now in the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar, Alsace (inventory number 88.RP.24).[2][3] The painting was donated to the museum by the artist's family, including his nephew, painter Many Benner.[1]

The painting was exhibited at the 1892 Salon de Paris, under the titles The Alarm (L'alerte), or The Stone Age (L'âge de pierre).[4] Like Benner's earlier Lakeside Dwelling, it depicts a scene from life in prehistoric times; here the artist shows three generations of a family of cave dwellers facing the threat of a bear.
