Banned for life from running
[edit]- On 8 November 2024, Evo Morales (MAS-IPSP, later Front for Victory[17]), former president of Bolivia (2006–2019),[18] became the first and only Bolivian citizen to be banned for life from running as a presidential candidate by the Plurinational Constitutional Tribunal.
The judges based their decision on Article 168 of the Constitution, which states that a citizen can only run for the presidency twice in a row. They interpreted this article to mean that a person can only run for president two times in their entire lifetime. However, Morales' lawyers called the ruling politically motivated. They argued that Article 168 of the Constitution prohibits a third consecutive re-election, emphasizing that the upcoming General Elections in August 2025 will not take place under an Evo Morales presidency.[19] The same law applies to all elected officials in the Executive Branch at the departmental, provincial and local levels (Article 285). [20] Furthermore, they questioned the legitimacy of the magistrates who had extended their own terms, asserting that they were still operating illegally.[21] It has also been noted that Evo Morales, under Article 167 of the Constitution, remains legally eligible to run for public office, even if he faces criminal charges or is arrested, as long as he has not been convicted through a formal judgment.[22][23] [24]
