On 03 January 2020, a Harbin Y-12 belonging to the No. 8 Squadron at SLAF Katunayake, crashed on a surveillance mission impacted mountainous terrain near Haputale, Sri Lanka.

Accident

The aircraft crashed at 09:15 local time (04:45 UTC) in the Haputale, Sri Lanka. The crash site was 65 kilometers (35 nmi) north of Weerawila, and near the village of Ayspeella. All four Air Force personnel who were onboard were killed.[2][3][4] One Person injured on the ground as consequence of the crash.[5]

Air Force later identified the airmen killed in the crash as two pilots - Squadron Leader W.A.M.B.N.B Weebedda and Flight Lieutenant K.M.D.L. Kulatunga and two airmen – Sergeant D.W.R.Y Kumara and Leading Aircraftman N.L.D. Hettiarachchi.[6][5][2]

The aircraft involved was a Harbin Y-12 of the Sri Lanka Air Force. The aircraft was operated by the No. 8 Squadron at SLAF Katunayake.
