The 1945 Indonesian presidential election was the first vote to elect the President and Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia for the 1945–1950 term. This presidential election was carried out in accordance with the 1945 Constitution, but the MPR (People's Consultative Assembly) had not yet been formed so its duties were carried out by the PPKI (Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence).[1]
Background
[edit]In 1945, Japan formed BPUPKI (Investigating Committee for Preparatory Work for Independence), which determined the State Foundation and Form of the State.
However, after Japan surrendered in 1945, Indonesia implemented Independence faster and of course, the Presidential Election was also faster.
On August 18, 1945, one day after the independence, a Presidential election took place which resulted in Sukarno and Hatta as President and Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia.
