Uploading copyrighted images

[edit]

Hello. From your recent recreation of LFDTS I assume you are the LFDTS public affairs officer (former user Lfdtspao). Thank you for re-writing the article in original words, but remember Wikipedia has guidelines and strictly enforced policies on content especially where there is legal issues. You recently uploaded 4 images with non-compliant license tags. These images are the property of the Crown and are not released under a free license. I have replaced all your non-compliant licensing terms with a fair use rationale, which is needed to use non-free media on Wikipedia; please do not upload further images with a non-compliant tag, as they may be deleted if someone else does not change add a fair use rationale quickly enough. You may upload them with an appropriate licensing tag, such as with a valid Non-free use rationale. Please read the non-free content policy and the copyright policy. If you have further question, feel free to ask on my talk page (click on my signature). Thank you — CharlieEchoTango20:13, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot to say that the non-free content exceptions only apply to copyrighted works that cannot be replaced by a free one (like unit logos). The picture you just uploaded could possibly be replaced by a free image and thus does not fall under the exception criterion and will be removed unless donated by the copyright holder. You also have to fill the rationale, otherwise it's invalid. Thank you. — CharlieEchoTango20:34, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Media Escort.JPG

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Media Escort.JPG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Orphaned non-free media (File:CFSAC.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:CFSAC.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 03:40, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for File:Sailor_Champion_Shot.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Sailor_Champion_Shot.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Melesse (talk) 19:10, 25 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:Queen's_Medal_For_Champion_Shot.jpg

[edit]

I have tagged File:Queen's_Medal_For_Champion_Shot.jpg as no rationale, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Some examples can be found at Wikipedia:Use rationale examples. Please also consider using article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. Thank you. More information needed about File:26 Bn CEF.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:26 Bn CEF.jpg. However, it needs some more work before it is okay to use on Wikipedia.

Please click here and do the following:

 1. Add a description of where the image comes from (not what it is) and who the creator is. Please be specific, and include a link if you can.
 2. Find the appropriate license from the list of free, non-free media, or public domain options. Copy the license template and paste it in the file's page, and save.

If you follow these steps, your image can help enhance Wikipedia. If you have any questions, feel free to ask at the media copyright questions page.

File permission problem with File:Mosin Nagant 91-30 Sight.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Mosin Nagant 91-30 Sight.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

 • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
 • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add OTRS pending to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as non-free fair use or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 20:02, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notification of automated file description generation

Your upload of File:21 CEF Patch.jpg or contribution to its description is noted, and thanks (even if belatedly) for your contribution. In order to help make better use of the media, an attempt has been made by an automated process to identify and add certain information to the media's description page.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited 22nd (French Canadian) Battalion, CEF, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Battle of Amiens (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Image file formats

[edit]

Hi, thanks for creating all these military patch images; they're filling a definite gap. However, they'd be most useful if

 • they were in SVG, which is a superior file format for geometric designs—it can be scaled arbitrarily large or small without the image looking bad, and they also support having a transparent background. The free editor Inkscape is capable of creating SVGs.
 • they were uploaded straight to Wikimedia Commons, so that other language editions of Wikipedia can use them.

If either isn't possible, that's fine too—your stuff is useful as it is, and other editors can convert to SVG and upload to Commons later—but doing these things really does help the encyclopaedia. Facing the Sky (talk) 10:43, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Queenstown / Queenston

[edit]

Kprtqrf06, I note that you has reverted Battle honours of the British and Imperial Armies. To clarify, I do not believe that "Queenstown" is an auto-correction - the first version of the article uses Queenstown. My source 1 says Queenstown (aka: Queenston).

I fully accept that the location is now called Queenston but at the time of the battle was called Queenstown, hence the spelling of the Battle Honour. Spellings change over time, note for example Cabul 1842 and Candahar 1842.

I did a Google search to find your cited source 2 but I cannot find Queenston / Queenstown in the document. In addition, I had a specific look at The Lincoln and Welland Regiment and The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (Wentworth Regiment); the battle honour is not listed for either regiment in the document. Can you provide a more specific citation, a page number, perhaps? Hamish59 (talk) 14:55, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On the page please change:

 1. Section headings are not ALL CAPS. Please change.
 2. Please remove bold text from the sections. For example, nothing in the Lineage section should be bold.
 3. Do not use bolding to show something... "Battle honours in Bold Type are emblazoned on the regimental colour." There are people who cannot make this out, especially the blind. Please use a symbol of some sort... a star, cross.

File source problem with File:RCR CEF.svg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:RCR CEF.svg.

(The) Royal Newfoundland Regiment

[edit]

Kprtqrf06, I see you recent edits to Royal Newfoundland Regiment and The Royal Newfoundland Regiment. A couple of problems. Firstly, such a change should have been done with a "Move" to preserve the edit history. Secondly, I believe that the Manual of Style, in particular WP:THE, would suggest that you should not use the definite article. Hamish59 (talk) 16:40, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of 42nd Field Artillery Regiment (Lanark and Renfrew Scottish), RCA, and it appears to include material copied directly from http://www.cmp-cpm.forces.gc.ca/dhh-dhp/his/ol-lo/vol-tom-3/par1/art/1adr-1rda-eng.asp.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

CCI Notice

[edit]

Hello, Kprtqrf06. This message is being sent to inform you that a request for a contributor copyright investigation has been filed at Contributor copyright investigations concerning your contributions to Wikipedia in relation to Wikipedia's copyrights policy. The listing can be found here. For some suggestions on responding, please see Responding to a CCI case. Thank you. I assume you're doing this copying in good faith as a result of some sort of misunderstanding about whether Crown Copyright works are public domain. Koumz (talk) 17:58, 15 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Kprtqrf06. After issues were verified in multiple articles, the CCI has been opened at Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Kprtqrf06. It seems from the note that you left there that the issue is not a matter of mistaking Crown Copyright as public domain, but more a matter of not realizing how much rewriting is required on Wikipedia to keep us comfortably compliant with the U.S. copyright laws that govern us. English is a word rich language; while titles cannot be changed and facts cannot be copyrighted, there are many ways to put facts together into sentences. U.S. copyright law recognizes copyright for any spark of human creativity, no matter how slight. Accordingly, we cannot add material like this to Wikipedia:

While facts are not copyrightable, creative elements of presentation – including both structure and language – are.
To help make similarities more clear, I have duplicated text that is verbatim in both works. In the first passage, you have omitted three words but otherwise the content is verbatim. In the second, there is a little more modification with a few words altered and omitted and one added, but the result is still very clearly derived from the first, with the same structure and almost all of the same language.
There are recommendations for using facts from sources without encountering these issues at Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing.
Now that the CCI is open, editors will be asked to review the articles for such issues and to remove, flag or rewrite from scratch any content that duplicates incompatibly licensed sources, like those under crown copyright. Generally, you will not receive notifications when this happens - to avoid people being overwhelmed by such notices, we ask that those handling the CCI do not, as a rule. For that reason, if you want to see what issues have been found and how they have been handled, please keep the CCI on your watchlist.
Please be very careful with future text additions. It is common for contributors who continue to have copyright issues after they have been advised of our policies and standards to be blocked for the protection of the encyclopedia, our editors and our reusers. I believe your work here shows an interest in contributing knowledge, and I hope that you will be able to continue to do so without any further interruptions or issues. If you have any doubt about how much rewriting is necessary, I'd encourage you to ask for feedback.
As a final note, I realized in evaluating the CCI request that you have also on several occasions copied content from one Wikipedia article to another. This can be done, but there are steps that must be taken, as content on Wikipedia is also not public domain. In order to comply with the license granted by our editors, content must be fully attributed. Please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia if you wish to do this in future and make sure that you provide attribution as necessary. It is preferable to request a move of an article, if you are simply trying to give a page a new name, as the move keeps the attribution history intact.
Please let me know if you have any questions about any of this. You can reach me at my talk page or attract me here by adding the text User:Moonriddengirl (complete with brackets) to your reply. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:33, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Nova Scotia Military Units indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 04:17, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
