  • 16:0016:00, 18 September 2021 diff hist −551 The whole nine yardsRemoved speculation that the idiom usage was rare; it may have rarely appeared in print, but there's evidence because of the now growing number of found usages between 1907-1946 that it was in use across parts of the midwest and upland south. It may have been in oral usage, without often making it into published writings (newspapers, etc.). Further, that it was not used in reference to a sports event, and hence rare, is weakly speculative.

  • 22:1522:15, 1 September 2017 diff hist −343 The whole nine yardsRemoved reference. Chapman's & Middleton-Smith's article on John Smedley (Textile History 46: 70-98, 2015) says nothing about nine yards as a standard length; consequently, the wording of the request for fabric is speculative.
