Rationale

[edit]

The idea is to use this template on user pages to subscribe to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost. Zocky 21:00, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Seperate news from box

[edit]

I would like to have a feed like this on my userpage. The trouble is, my layout is very structured, and putting this whole box in would force everything out of wack. My proposal is to change how this box is rendered. Take the bulleted list of news items, and place them into a seperate template. Make news related changes to that template, and then transclude it into the subscription template. Than people like me could just trancslude the news feeds. I think that would be a justifiable use of a meta-template.--Max Talk (add)Contributions 02:45, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'd really like to see this too - I'd like to make a custom version hidden by default for my talk page. If the content were seperated out, it would make customization much simpler - people could adapt the content for their particularly-formatted userspace, or continue to use this template by default which would remain the same. Broken image

[edit]

The Wikipedia Signpost header image on the template is strangely broken for me - this can't be a browser cache issue, as it occurs in two different browsers, one of which I have not used to look at the Signpost template. I'm not sure why, though - the image does appear to exist on Wikipedia. -- Mithent 21:53, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Option for "float=none"

[edit]
{|
|{{Signpost-subscription}}
|}

The above table code is how one stops the normal right-floating alignment of the Signpost box. But the box plus table is wider than the Signpost box alone. Note the white space to the left of the box.

The "Centralized discussion" box

{{cent}}

has a "float=none" option:

{{cent|float=none}}

It stops its normal right-float alignment.

I like to float various things (such as images) to the right on my user and user talk pages. At 1024 X 768 screen resolution of many monitors that is difficult with the Signpost box. I had to narrow photos down to 200-pixels wide in order to float them to the right of the Signpost box inside of the table.

See my user and user talk pages, and turn down the screen resolution to 1024 X 768 temporarily. Note how much space the Signpost box-plus-table takes up.

It might also be good to narrow the Signpost box down to the same width as the "Centralized discussion" box. --Timeshifter (talk) 03:50, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Option is "none", and not "float=none"

[edit]

{{editprotected}} I discovered that some templates (such as the Signpost box) use just "none" and not "float=none" in order to stop right and left floating alignment. "None" also stops text and images from wrapping around the template.

Can an admin add

{{Signpost-subscription|none}}

to the list of options on the template description?

Please add it to the new /doc page yourself. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:47, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I think the box width needs to be lessened. This is done by changing

width:{{{width|23em}}};

to something like this:

width:{{{width|20em}}};

Then the Signpost box looks like the one to the right. It is around the same width as {{cent}} (Centralized discussion box). --Timeshifter (talk) 01:15, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I updated the new doc page you created too. --Timeshifter (talk) 19:12, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry folks, I've got to dispute your change to the default width parameter. The width was set to 23em to match the other Wikipedia press projects' (Wikipedia Weekly & WikiVoices) subscription templates. You can see the problem on the Wikipedia:Community portal, the Signpost is now thinner than the others. This also causes the footer to take up two lines. If you want the box to be thinner on your own talk page, you know that you can add width=20em as a parameter. Please revert this the default to 20em.
This would also be a good time to change the date to link to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost. — Pretzels Hii! 02:24, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Further to that, "Tip Line" should now read "Suggestions", and "About" should be the first footer link. Thanks — Pretzels Hii! 02:26, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Is there a reason for the date at the top to be links? It seems rather useless to me. Perhaps replace it with a permanent link to the current issue. --Apoc2400 (talk) 00:44, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adding that link causes the footer to wrap for me, at default width and default text size, so I would suggest either About, Archives, or Suggestions is sacrificed to make room - if Book is really necessary in this template. — Pretzels Hii! 16:34, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It looks fine for me, although I do have a huge screen. We could place the footer in a {{nowrap}}, which would solve the wrapping problem. Opinons? Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 17:11, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The default width is set in ems, so it's based on font size rather than screen size (I have a big screen too!). {{nowrap}} would force the footer to overflow out of the box when there's not enough room; I would rather we just remove a link so as not to get cluttered. Alternatively, you could move Single-page and Book to above the footer line. — Pretzels Hii! 20:59, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Table-based version

[edit]

Currently this template uses nested divs for layout. Most boxes of this type on Wikipedia use a flat table format. I've converted the sandbox code to use this layout; the result is more readable code that should hopefully be easier on screen readers. if there are no problems with it I'll sync it in a few days. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) - talk 15:02, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm opposed to this change, as it's more semantically correct and accessible to use the <div> tags and CSS. It's not a table of data; using HTML tables for layout purposes is bad practice. You're right that this is common across Wikipedia, but I think this is due to ageing templates and the limitations of Mediawiki rather than technical superiority. — Pretzels Hii! 16:44, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • It is certainly not better to wrap divs within each other arbitrarily, as this template does. Semantically there is little between the two, and the improvement in readaibility is enough to justify the change IMO. If at some point we have a grand migration to use a div format for these floating boxes then it will be much easier if they all use a simple wikitable format first. For the time being, this ensures that the box behaves consistently with our other templates (up until yesterday it didn't even float properly for instance). Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) - talk 10:41, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Collapsible

[edit]

Hi may i suggest a |collapse= parameter? I have done it in the sandbox as an example (see the diff). If the |collapse= parameter is left blank, the template should display as normal, but if it is filled in as |collapse=yes only then shall it hide the stories, leaving a little header and a [show] icon. Cheers, benzband (talk) 13:36, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

 Done, though I've simplified the code to use {{hidden}}'s built-in conditional support rather than having two entirely different code paths for displaying collapsed and uncollapsed text. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 14:52, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, and thanks! benzband (talk) 15:10, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Since these changes the |collapse=yes parameter doesn't function anymore. Can someone please add the following:
|expanded = {{#ifeq:{{{collapse|}}}|yes||all}}
This should solve the problem (tested here in the sandbox and works fine). benzband (talk) 11:34, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Collapse button

[edit]

Is it really necessary for us to have a collapse button for the Signpost template? The list of articles is rarely longer than 6 or 7, and since the title takes up most of the room, collapsing the template doesn't actually make much difference. It just seems like interface cruft to me. I know people want to make everything on Wikipedia collapsable, but this isn't always an improvement. Kaldari (talk) 16:05, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Protect - restore single-page and book views, split the bottom

[edit]

Please wait 24 hours for feedback before implementing and (temporarily) deny the change if there are unresolved objections.

Please add in the changes I put in the sandbox a few minutes ago: diff between Sandbox as of a few minutes ago and the template as of a few minutes ago. See Template:Signpost-subscription/testcases for a demo.

This change restores the single-page and book options to bottom section and splits the bottom section into two lines with a {{hr}} splitting the two lines for cosmetic reasons. All of the links that lead directly to various views of the current or past Signpost are below the newly-added horizontal rule.

Note: I prefer one line with the automatic word-wrap, but some comments earlier on this talk page indicate that at least some people do not like it. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 18:27, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This edit of 00:13, 7 January 2014‎ by Pretzels is okay too. I have no preference of his or mine. I've purged the testcases. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 00:55, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
