Propose we replace {{Zamuni}} with {{Infobox settlement}}
[edit]Per the discussion on Template_talk:Zamuni, I suggest that we progressively replace uses of {{Zamuni}} with {{Infobox settlement}}, and that we update the Task Force page to indicate that. This change will give us a lot more useful fields to use in the infoboxes, and improve the standardization relative to municipality articles from other countries. - htonl (talk) 09:42, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
- Approve - {{zamuni}} is far to limiting --NJR_ZA (talk) 09:46, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
- Approve - Works for me. AtticusX (talk) 10:17, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
- OK, you two have done most of the work on the municipalities of late and I doubt there will be any other feeback. I'll go ahead and update the wikiproject and start updating the municipalities. --NJR_ZA (talk) 14:54, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Naming conventions
[edit]I've been looking at the official establishment notices for Western Cape municipalities - they're linked from here - and it seems that the official names of the local municipalities don't actually include the word "Local". So, for example, "George Local Municipality" is actually called "George Municipality" - see section 4 here. I've checked a sample of local municipalities that have websites, and they also seem to leave out the word "Local" in their names.
So I propose a change to our naming convention: municipality articles should be named according to the official name in the establishment notice. Therefore local municipalities would be named "X Municipality", districts would be "Y District Municipality", and metros would be, well, whatever the notice says. - htonl (talk) 00:29, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
- Not a big issue as far as I am concerned, we can keep it as it is or change it. Interestingly enough, the demarcation boards uses Local and the list on the link you provided uses Local, even though the content of the notices clearly state that that their names do not include Local. --NJR_ZA (talk) 12:02, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
- It is odd, isn't it. I don't think we need to go out and change all of them immediately, but I think we should rename them progressively along with the {{Zamuni}} → {{Infobox settlement}} transition. Actually, this came up because I was looking for a source for the non-English names when I was adding {{Infobox settlement}}.
- Anyway, I'm trying to find the establishment notices for other provinces. Unfortunately they don't make it as easy as the Western Cape. - htonl (talk) 12:57, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
- OK, the plot thickens. I've got to the other provinces' establishment notices on Sabinet (non-public, I have access to it through UCT) and it seems that in Gauteng, at least, the official name includes "Local". So, anyway, it seems to me that, given the ambiguity, the possibility for confusion, and the amount of work that would be involved, this is actually a bad idea. So I'm withdrawing this proposal. - htonl (talk) 13:37, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
- I think they haven't quite settled yet whether their official naming policy is to include the "Local" or not. When I was reading through Integrated Development Plans from various local municipalities, quite a number of them referred to the municipality both ways at different places within the same document. Until a consistent naming standard is actually established, I second the withdrawal of this proposal. :) -AtticusX (talk) 18:00, 17 January 2010 (UTC)
Article update and cleanup drive
[edit]htonl and I have begun an update and cleanup process to get the municipality articles into reasonable shape in time for the upcoming elections. Please join us. Roger (talk) 19:41, 12 April 2011 (UTC)
- I've finished uploading a complete set of municipality location maps showing the new municipal borders that come into effect on Wednesday. They're all categorized under commons:Category:Maps of South African municipalities. - htonl (talk) 00:52, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
See this thread on htonl's talk page where various post-election article changes are discussed. Please join the process (many hands make light work). Roger (talk) 10:46, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
Articles affected by boundary and status changes at the 2011 election
[edit]The following articles need to be updated to reflect changes:
- South African municipal election, 2011 (This is the main article of course - it still needs a LOT of work!)
- Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality Done
- Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality Done
- Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality
- Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality Done
- Districts of South Africa
- List of municipalities of South Africa - partly done: major status changes done; still needs general update of area statistics to reflect minor boundary changes
- District Management Area (Which LMs are affected by this?) (Aparently some of the DMAs were already abolished and merged some time ago - this article sems to be quite badly out of date even before the current changes. Some of these DM articles don't mention having a DMA at all but should be verified that their LM stats are correct.)
- Cacadu District Municipality
- Chris Hani District Municipality
- Thabo Mofutsanyane District Municipality
- West Rand District Municipality
- Umgungundlovu District Municipality
- Uthukela District Municipality
- Umkhanyakude District Municipality
- Sisonke District Municipality
- Mopani District Municipality
- Ehlanzeni District Municipality
- Namakwa District Municipality
- Pixley ka Seme District Municipality
- Siyanda District Municipality
- Frances Baard District Municipality
- Kgalagadi District Municipality
- West Coast District Municipality
- Cape Winelands District Municipality
- Overberg District Municipality
- Eden District Municipality
- Central Karoo District Municipality
- Template:Largest cities of South Africa Done
Please expand this list as necessary and mark them as Done when updates are completed.
All hands on deck please for processing the results as they are released. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 17:04, 3 August 2016 (UTC)

[edit]I'm starting to work on new municipal boundary maps this evening, hope to have them uploaded by the end of the long-long weekend. - htonl (talk) 20:14, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
Maps x2
[edit]Just a note to say that I've finished uploading all the locator maps for the new municipal boundaries. They're all named with "(2016)" at the end just as the previous lot had "(2011)". - htonl (talk) 18:06, 11 September 2016 (UTC)

[edit]Now that we have the Politics task force which covers politics and government more generally, should we consider closing this task force down and folding it into that one? - htonl (talk) 18:05, 11 September 2016 (UTC)
- There's more to municipalities than only politics; geography, demographics, economics, etc. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 05:13, 12 September 2016 (UTC)
CfR proposal for renaming categories of local municipalities
[edit]I have nominated the categories "Local municipalities of X" (where X is a district municipality) for renaming. The discussion is at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2018 August 29#Local municipalities of South Africa hierarchy. - htonl (talk) 13:22, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
