Merge of Mandate Palestine into British Mandate for Palestine
In 2010, the article "Mandate Palestine" was forked out of "British Mandate for Palestine" article, becoming an identical article since. Due to the almost complete overlap (technically both articles describe a former Mandatory geopolitical entity of Palestine under British rule, which has only one article in other languages) and ongoing confusion (some insisted that "British Mandate for Palestine" is more the name of a 1922 document and not a country), i propose to merge Mandate Palestine into British Mandate for Palestine, and make an additional article named British Mandate for Palestine (document) to prevent confusion between the document and the geopolitical entity. Please vote with a proper reasoning here.Greyshark09 (talk) 10:03, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

A merge discussion has come up at Talk:Hunnic Empire#Merge with Huns and delete? and I'm seeking input from your group since you have experience handling a wide variety of articles about former state entities. The discussion may go to a more formal RfC. In the discussion so far, the question has arisen surrounding when it is appropriate to have an article for a former country separate from the main history article. I think your participation can help clarify such questions. Thank you. --Stacey Doljack Borsody (talk) 17:46, 14 January 2012 (UTC)
Problem with the move of a article
Recently i tried to move Northumbria to Kingdom of Northumbria, but a administrator rv my move with no further explanation. I tried to explain in its talk page that every single article about a former country has its form of government specified, but he did not repond it. Someone can help me here? -Ilhador- (talk) 23:17, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

WPFC Europe
I would like to make a motion to split the ParticipantWPFC/Europe members list into four lists located separately on the WikiProject Former countries/Empires bureau, the WikiProject Former countries/HRE task force, the WikiProject Former countries/AH task force and the WikiProject Former countries/Italian task force. This will allow new editors to discretely choose between which subprojects they would like to be members of, and hence participate in. Currently, if a member only intends to actively contribute to any one of the four, he/she is incorrectly listed as a willing member of the other three.--Xuxalliope (talk) 23:31, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
New Spain/Spanish Empire
I'm interested in editing the New Spain portal, creating a New Spain portal page for WPFC, and adding New Spain along with the Spanish Empire onto the scope of the WP Former Countries. The featured content on the New Spain portal is misleading, (along with other things compared to other portals), and I'm wondering why the Spanish Empire is not on the Vital Articles list. I was going to add it myself, but not without at least trying to post a statement beforehand. And I also wanted to know if anyone would like to assist with the New Spain/Spanish Empire should the idea be passed? Contact me about this as soon as you can, thanks for reading LeftAire (talk) 16:29, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
- I think this is a great idea! Feel free to proceed to take the leadership of the portal, LeftAire. However, New Spain and the Spanish Empire should already be within the WPFC scope, so I'm not sure what you mean by adding them into it. As for adding the Spanish Empire to the vital articles list, that is up to the WikiProject Vital Articles to decide. I recommend bringing it up on their talk page if you haven't done so already. My current focus lies in bettering the structure of the WPFC, so I'm afraid I am unable to devote my time to New Spain in specific. Maybe you should try contacting users on the Template:User Spanish History or Template:User interest Spain lists, as they have an already expressed interest in Spanish History and Spain. I'm sorry for the lateness of my reply. Best of luck, Xuxalliope (talk) 21:46, 25 March 2012 (UTC).
Projects and subprojects
Do we really need so many subprojects for a project with such a limited scope? It wouldn't be a problem if people weren't abuse of them, even a dog now is officially a Former country.-Ilhador- (talk) 05:18, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
- That was listed under the scope of the HRE task force, but it was taken off the scope nearly a month ago. I didn't realize it was still listed under a former country. I say for all of the projects take off the ones that definitely aren't needed (like the Pomeranian), but include significant people, events, cities/places should be the main focus for each of these. Anything else should be omitted. I do question the reasoning of a first AND second Mexican Empire, when you could just list in under one. Then again, my knowlegdge in that scope is limited.... LeftAire (talk) 21:15, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
- I quite agree with you -Ilhador-. In fact, I am currently working on a method of scope standardization. As for the subprojects, I think we should assess whether they have any active members who still want to keep them running. Personally, I know the HRE and Empire of Brazil taskforces have members who are active in their maintenance. For the other subprojects, we should get the active members to vote on whether they wish to see them disbanded. As for the dog article, it has the Prussian WikiProject tag on it. The situation with Prussia being its own WikiProject yet still within the WPFC's banner is a bit awkward. Perhaps we can sort that out. Furthermore, there is also a current discussion going on about the scope of individual WikiProjects. You might want to read over it to see where others stand. Thanks, Xuxalliope (talk) 22:18, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
We currently have support from LordAmeth, the only active member of the GOV and Special states task forces for the merging or removal of the two. I do not think we need to keep either of them, as they do not have a large enough participant base to be self-sustaining. However, I would like to hear the opinions of others first. Xuxalliope (talk) 21:50, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
- I support the merger of subprojects into a single bureau (or work group). Cheers, Pædia 00:55, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
Personally, I think the subprojects are fine, it's the fact that some of the subprojects have a much wider scope than the scope of the main project that is the problem, IMHO. Thus, the "Former countries" banner can create confusion as to what exactly the page is being tagged under. For example, Martin Luther is not a "Former country," yet he is undoubtedly a very important figure in the history of both the Holy Roman Empire and Prussia, and, IMHO, deserves to be tagged in both projects - despite not really coming under the "Former countries" banner. Personally, I think that WikiProject Prussia and the Holy Roman Empire task force should be subprojects of WikiProject Germany, the Austria-Hungary task force a subproject of WikiProject Austria, the Empire of Brazil task force a subproject of WikiProject Brazil, ect. At the very least, I believe that WikiProject Prussia should definitely either be made its own independent project (à la WikiProject Soviet Union), or be moved under the WikiProject Germany banner (as it is fairly commonly accepted that modern-day Germany is the successor state to Prussia). Ejgreen77 (talk) 21:34, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, this made much more sense.-Ilhador- (talk) 22:02, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
- I believe that moving the Empire of Brazil and the Austria-Hungary task forces to their respective current nation countries would be a good idea. As for the Holy Roman Empire task force, I feel it would serve a better purpose to remain as a subproject of the WikiProject former countries. It consists of a disproportionate number of subdivisions in comparison to non-state articles, making it very distinct from the other task forces. For this reason, it would be more suitable to remain where it is. On the topic of the WikiProject Prussia, it has been tagged as inactive. Other possible alternatives would therefore be to delete it, or assimilate it into WikiProject Germany. Xuxalliope (talk) 22:35, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
- As a member of WikiProject Prussia, I have removed the inactive tag. Ejgreen77 (talk) 23:51, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
- The inactivity was based on the criteria outlined on the WikiProject Guide, as no edits had been made to WikiProject Prussia's talk page for months. Furthermore, besides the flagging of the WikiProject as inactive, no edits had been made to the main page since August of last year. If you believe you can increase the activity of the WikiProject again, please replace the current {{semi-active}} banner I just put up with the {{WikiProject status}} one. I recommend using these tips regarding WikiProject revival. Xuxalliope (talk)
- I talked to Ilhador about a week ago of which important cities, events, people, etc., were needed. What I had meant was just the obvious that weren't mentioned, and not just every single one. Some (like Prague and Vienna; weren't listed, and should be if Berlin was) and that's just what I meant. Sorry I didn't clarify, and I'm also for deletings WPFC's that aren't used. And couldn't that Hanseatic League be merged in with Germany subprojects as well? LeftAire (talk) 17:39, 3 April 2012 (UTC)
I think we've discussed enough to start treating the subprojects on a one-by-one basis. As I mentioned earlier, Lord Ameth, the only active member of the Special task force, supports its removal or merging into another project. This would be a good place to start. I will create a new section on the talk page for voting to take place. Xuxalliope (talk) 10:19, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
- Has there been any more discussion about moving the other subprojects to their respective current nation projects? Ejgreen77 (talk) 05:34, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Extraordinary governments task force
Second proposal: The deletion of WikiProject Former countries/GOV task force. Add {{db-xfd}} to the task force's page if a consensus is reached. Deletion of this task force also requires the removal of its subsection from the WikiProject's banner.
Support It is inactive, as before. Xuxalliope (talk) 19:20, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Support And, the job of it can be transferred to Wikiproject Former Countries(if the governments have been dissolved) or to Wikiproject Countries(if the governments are serving as current permanent governments.) Or Wikiproject Countries should have a GOV task force. The GOVTF doesn't look neat into this Wikiproject but definitively be useful on Wikiproject Countries.--Al Sheik!Woiu!I do not fish! Territory of the Military Commander in Serbia
G'day, I'm looking for some advice regarding the appropriate infobox to use here. Currently there is a freeform infobox, which is the subject of some controversy, and some editors, myself included, would like to see a more standardised one used. The 'Territory of the Military Commander, Serbia' or 'Territory of the Military Commander in Serbia' (slight variations between sources on the official name) was established on 22 April 1941 after the invasion of Yugoslavia, and remained occupied by the Germans until October 1944. Essentially, it was a part of Yugoslavia before the war (there was no state or subdivision called Serbia between 1922 and 1941, and the occupied territory included parts of several banovina of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia). From late May 1941 until they withdrew, the Germans were assisted by puppet governments they appointed to assist them to administer the territory, but the territory never achieved any level of independence or recognition, even within the Axis. Can you suggest what infobox would be most appropriate? Any guidance would be appreciated. Peacemaker67 (talk) 09:52, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Due to its status of being occupied, I recommend using {{Infobox former subdivision}}. East Berlin is a good example if you'd like to look at a similar case that already uses the infobox. Xuxalliope (talk) 10:00, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Cheers! Peacemaker67 (talk) 11:19, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- I wonder if you could help out with some syntax over at the article, here. We've implemented {{Infobox former subdivision}}, but we've been having trouble with the syntax, the deputies went haywire (across the right hand side, when I added a sixth leader...). We've removed the deputies for the moment, but we would like to retain the fields, and, well, we have run out of ideas to fix it... Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Peacemaker67 (talk) 07:41, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- Xuxalliope, I do not agree that East Berlin is an appropriate example. East Berlin was clearly subdivision of East Germany while WW2 Serbia was not subdision of any entity, please check history maps which presenting Serbia as fully separate entity: [1], [2], [3], [4]. I think that this article is rather similar to Iraq under U.S. Military Occupation article, which uses "Infobox former country". "Infobox former subdivision" wrongly imply that Serbia was a subdivision of something. PANONIAN 08:24, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- Xuxalliope, the position I provided is that this territory was an occupied subdivision of Yugoslavia, not Germany. I'll not say any more other than to again thank you for your guidance. Peacemaker67 (talk) 08:30, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- I disagree with that claim: nobody regarded Serbia as "subdivision of Yugoslavia", neither Germans or Yugoslav government in exile. For Germans, Yugoslavia was destroyed in 1941, and 3 new entities that they created (Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro) were seen by the Germans as 3 new countries, not as "subdivisions of Yugoslavia", while Yugoslav government in exile did not even recognized existence of these entities and certainly did not regarded them as "subdivisions". These entities were "de facto countries" or unrecognized countries, not subdivisions of Yugoslavia or of other countries. PANONIAN 09:21, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- This is WP:OR. Peacemaker67 (talk) 09:48, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- What exactly? PANONIAN 12:03, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- your claim that the Germans created Montenegro is just factually incorrect (it was created by the Italians, who convinced an assembly (of their choosing) to proclaim separation from Serbia, but which was immediately put under Italian military government when the uprising started and which remained so until the Italians themselves collapsed). Your claim re: the NDH is largely correct, the Germans engineered its creation and it was recognised by them and other Axis countries as a state, but your claim re: the Germans saw Serbia as a 'new country', and not just an occupied territory of what had been Yugoslavia before the invasion, is just straight out WP:OR. What is your source for the Germans seeing Serbia as a new country? A map? It would need to be a German one, surely. What about finding text on a WP:RS that says that? Peacemaker67 (talk) 12:21, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- To Panonian: I agree with Peacemaker. All of your claims of a radical nature need to be supported by a range of secondary sources. To Peacemaker: As for your deputy concern, the infobox was not intended to be an exhaustive list of all political figures. Only prominent prime ministers (in this case) should be shown, which is normally limited to the first and last ones. If you are still adamant on including a 6th prime minister, changes would have to be made to the actual infobox template. Xuxalliope (talk) 13:13, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- Xuxalliope, about which "claims of a radical nature" you speak? Please tell me to which of my claims you referring and I will provide sources for my claims. Also, is it possible that we create new infobox for "occupied territories" only? In that way, we would avoid dispute whether such territories were countries or subdivisions. PANONIAN 17:53, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- By the way, I did not said correct thing - I meant that 3 entities were created by the Axis Powers, not only by Germans (Montenegro was indeed created by the Italians). Regarding Serbia, there is notable number of sources that mentioning it as a "puppet state of Serbia", please see: [5]. PANONIAN 18:30, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- Here is the exact quotation from the source: "Germany established the puppet state of Serbia". Or this one: "A puppet state of Serbia was created". Also: "a small puppet state of Serbia was established". PANONIAN 18:32, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
- When I used the expression 'radical' I was referring to your claim being contrary to what was already in place. For your concern about occupied territories, I'm not yet convinced that such territories cannot be divided into sovereign states and subdivisions. As for its governing status, those sources seem legitimate. Mention them on the actual article's talk page so that its other editors can consider them. If discussion does turn out to arrive at it being a puppet state, I am in support of it having a former country infobox. Xuxalliope (talk) 11:21, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

Concerning the Sample Entries on the front page
Would there be a need to add the Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch Empires onto the list? I noticed that none of these were level 3 vital articles (the Spanish one in particular, but that's another conversation) and wondered if I could add the Portuguese and Spanish and create the Iberian states, and with the Dutch Empire add it under the other section. Didn't want to make any edits before asking, and thanks for reading. LeftAire (talk) 17:34, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

I suppose this situation is analogous to extant colonies that are considered as "(non-sovereign) countries"? (until recently, Hong Kong and Macau were colonies, and they're still treated as "countries" in many contexts; the Danish colony of Greenland is a "country" in the constitution of Denmark. England/Wales/Scotland/NI are "countries" but not sovereign, which would be an analogous situation) -- 65.92.180.137 (talk) 12:31, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Canaan - a former country?
I have recently been surprised to discover the use of Template:Infobox_former_country for a geographic region - specifically Canaan. New Sasanian Empire Map!
I should have gone here on regards to this topic in the first place. I hope this is the right place to address this. Recently I have posted a new topic on the Sasanian Empire talk page on regards to the map in the infobox. (Side note: I feel embarrassed that I didn't come here for this in the first place after I was told by other users on the reference desk as well as an administrator to go to the WikiProject pages for situations like this.)
I made a request on the Map Workshop for the cartographers to make a new map of the Sasanian Empire in this format: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/File:Chasaren.jpg. Further details about this topic are on the Sasanian Empire talk page. See here: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Talk:Sasanian_Empire#Recommendations_to_Map_workshop_team

Leaflet for Wikiproject Former Countries at Wikimania 2014
Hi all,
My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.
One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.
This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:
• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film
• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.
• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.
• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____
• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost
The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014
For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! WikiProject X is live!
Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 10:57, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Make WikiProject Ottoman Empire a task force of Wikipedia:WikiProject Former countries?
Hi! I found that Wikipedia:WikiProject Ottoman Empire states the project is defunct and suggests looking here. Why not make this a task force of former countries? Ottoman Empire can't easily be merged into Turkey as it included much more than that, and the empire also spanned many continents. Maybe this is the best place where it can go?
Thanks WhisperToMe (talk) 23:20, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
- @WhisperToMe: I can do the work to get this under the same banner template if need be; I've already converted some projects into taskforces this year for WP:NY, but first a consensus for the changeover would need to be established. In order to do that you should leave a note of the discussion here on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ottoman Empire, Perhaps something along the lines of the following:
Please comment at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject_Former_countries#Make WikiProject Ottoman Empire a task force of Wikipedia:WikiProject Former countries?
.A similar note should probably also be left at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Turkey (notably WikiProject Prussia has its banner supported by WikiProject Germany so its at least concievable they would be interested in the taskforce). That done I would ping active members of this project to this discussion to see if there's any opposition. If everyone agrees on the change you would also need to decide whether or not you want those pages to stay as they are, or be moved to be subpages of this WikiProject. Once everything's in order just ping me (or drop me a direct line on meta) and I'll work the task into my schedule. I'm not an everday editor so please be patient it may be a few weeks from request to implementation if I'm busy, thanks.𝒬𝔔 01:08, 18 June 2020 (UTC)- @Quantocius Quantotius: Thanks! I went ahead and notified not only the Ottoman Empire and Turkey project but also those of various other countries and regions. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:11, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Cplakidas: @Al Ameer son: Thought you gentlemen might be interested in this. - LouisAragon (talk) 07:55, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
- That is a good idea. It would be necessary to have a cross-reference from the WikiProject Turkey pages and talk page banner, because many of the Ottoman articles are tagged with it, and because of the obvious affinities between the two (many of the Ottoman articles have been and will be written by our Turkish fellow editors either way). For the same reason, it might be a good idea to move Wikipedia:WikiProject Greece/Byzantine world task force under the auspices of WikiProject Former Countries, while retaining a cross-reference from the WikiProject Greece pages and talk page banner.
- At the risk of expanding this discussion too much, I was also thinking about task forces on the early caliphates (Rashidun-Umayyad-Abbasid-Fatimid) either individually or collectively, and on the Republic of Venice (covered now under the Italian states TF, but given its extensive empire overseas, it really should have something of its own). Constantine ✍ 08:21, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
- Task forces on the early caliphates would be a great idea. One for the Sasanian Empire, the Achaemenid Empire, the Russian Empire and the Safavid Empire would be beneficial too IMHO (amongst others). What do you guys think? As for the Ottoman Empire, I agree with WhisperToMe's proposal and Constantine's suggestion. - LouisAragon (talk) 11:37, 27 June 2020 (UTC)

Notes on implementation
@WhisperToMe: Just letting you know I saw the invites you left on other WikiProjects; thanks for going above and beyond to give more notifications. I think it best to leave this open for 30 days to give everyone a large window to participate; if at that point (17 JUL) there is a consensus in favor we can start going forward with the merger, I may start sandbox work a bit before that if there are no objections. This will also allow some additional time for more ideas to develop here so we can implement them as well.
- @Quantocius Quantotius: I'm totally fine with that! WhisperToMe (talk) 23:14, 28 June 2020 (UTC)
- Pinging Discussion participants (WhisperToMe—LouisAragon—Cplakidas) Thought I'd let everyone know the proposed change is now at Template:WikiProject Former countries/sandbox so you should have a few days to look it over. The taskforce order is alphabetical; the ottoman taskforce image is just the flag to remain consistent with existing practice. As formatted this is assuming that no page moves are planned (movement to subpages during a project merge is optional), however it's not difficult to make the changes necessary if everyone prefers to move them instead. If you have any questions feel free to ask, and of course it's not necessary to make all changes at once as we can always add additional features later.𝒬𝔔 23:43, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

@WhisperToMe, LouisAragon, and Constantine: As a quick update, the change to Template:WikiProject Former countries is now complete, and I have requested the necessary bot run needed prior to merging Template:WikiProject Ottoman Empire to it. I'll keep everyone posted once that's all been done. (please ping on reply)
- @WhisperToMe, LouisAragon, and Constantine: From a template perspective we are now at Merger complete. and Template:WikiProject Ottoman Empire is now a wrapper for Template:WikiProject Former countries with no remaining transclusions. Much of the credit here goes to Primefac for doing all the neccesary bot runs. The next decision point is whether to move any pages. It's not a requirmenent and was not done with WikiProject Prussia however the other taskforces are on subpages; so if there's consensus for that I can set everything up.Otherwise all that is left is post-merge cleanup like redirecting redundant subpages and setting
|taskforce=yes
on {{WikiProject status}}, but I don't think you'll need my help for any of that.On a related note if you want to add additional taskforces either here or for a differrent WikiProject or just need something done for {{WPBannerMeta}} in general somewhere and don't mind potentially waiting a few weeks from request to implementation just hit me with a ping or drop me a direct line on meta and I'll see what I can do.I may be around again this weekend, but I also have a fair amount of IRL stuff to do so please allow for some delay in any replies, thanks. (please ping on reply)𝒬𝔔 21:10, 7 August 2020 (UTC)- @Quantocius Quantotius: Thank you for the update. Great work. In relation to my previous comment: would you be able to create/add additional taskforces? - LouisAragon (talk) 02:22, 8 August 2020 (UTC)
- LouisAragon: Absolutely, you can see for example Template:WikiProject Medicine or Template:WikiProject India which are both supporting numerous task forces. As a practical matter I tend to think that a smaller number of broader task forces are often preferable to a larger number of niche task forces, but that's just for the purposes of facilitating discussion among a larger number of interested parties. From a technical perspective I am fully capable of adding however many task forces the WikiProject wants as long as there is consensus for the addition. Given the vagaries of my schedule however, it's probably best that any requests be time-insensitive. So like I said earlier just hit me with a ping whenever there's a consensus (or minimally a lack of objections) and I'll get to work.(please ping on reply)𝒬𝔔 00:02, 10 August 2020 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Project-independent quality assessments
Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class=
parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.
No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.
However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom
parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Aymatth2 (talk) 20:22, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
