levant category

Hi all

I have had some correspondence with an anonymous editor who added a category tag to the Cyprus page. I deleted it as the category guides say that to add a category there should be enough material in the article to clearly show relevance. After further discussion the editor seems to question my reasoning and as I am not concerned with anything apart from NPoV and the relevance factor the anonymous user has mentioned the discussion being broadened to the Cyprus Project and so I have included our conversations below.--Chaosdruid (talk) 09:32, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

I have removed the category tag "levant" from the article Cyprus

I have no problem with it apart from the guidelines state that if it has little relevance tags should not be added.

The question of relevance is subjective. Levantine people regard Cyprus as part of the Levant. 94.192.38.247 (talk) 01:52, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Ok - I see you chose not to discuss this on my chat page as suggested, and you have added it again without discussion.

Cyprus is an independent island, and so I am confused as to who exactly you are saying the Levantine people are, as it seems this is a historical grouping and not relevant today, and why they should consider Cyprus as being part of Levant. I understand that Cyprus was part of the Ugrit kingdom, but was autonomous. The Levant page says "The name Levantine is additionally applied to people of Italian (especially Venetian and Genoese), French, or other Euro-Mediterranean origin who have lived in Anatolia, (current Turkey) or the East Mediterranean coast (the Levant) since the period of the Crusades, the Byzantine period and the Ottoman period."

Please could you explain this to me as the map of Levant - here - clearly shows that Cyprus is not part of the grouping.

PS the document Wikipedia:Category#Guidelines contains this "An article should normally possess all the referenced information necessary to demonstrate that it belongs in each of its categories. For example, avoid placing a category for a profession or award unless the article provides some verification that the placement is accurate. Use the {{Category unsourced}} tag if you find an article in a category that is not shown by sources to be appropriate. If the composition of a category is likely to be controversial, a list (which can be annotated) may be more appropriate."

Since you started the discussion on my talk page, that's where I continued it. I didn't add it again without any discussion as you stated. You began by stating you have no problem with it and I begin to wonder whether your subsequent insistance demonstrates otherwise. The Levant isn't some sort of political organization so Cyprus being an independant (albeit disputed) island is not relevant. The Levantine people are the people of the Levant, which is widely understood to be the countries in the Eastern Mediterranean including the Syro-Anatolian island of Cyprus. This is the Lebanese, Syrians, Cypriots, Palestinians, Israelis, Jordanians, Iraqis and Turks. The map is not a definitive illustration and simply depicts the Levant in the most restrictive definition, which is Historical Syria. Can you explain why you want to restrict the term to historical Syria? After all, Cyprus has historically being regarded within the use of the term and it makes little sense to exclude an island 60 miles off the coast of Syria in the Eastern Mediterranean from a term that is applied to the lands in the Eastern Mediterranean. Insistence ? I questioned the validity of the category tag. Perhaps you are not aware that the Republic of Cyprus is a member of the European Union and there is no dispute as to it's independence?.

I do not wish to restrict the term to historical Syria, but you have yet to show that there are a significant number of Levant references in the Cyprus, History of Cyprus or other related articles to warrant inclusion of the category.

Do not attempt to conduct original research on my motives and intent, I have clearly stated my reasoning and will transclude this series of correspondence into the Cyprus article as you wish. This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. Project Cyprus-Aiports

I was looking at the various airports in Cyprus and they could use some work. I would be happy to work on them. I have already made some changes to the Nicosia International Airport page and could do similar things else were.

Factual Accuracy of List of Minister of Communications and Works of the Republic of Cyprus

An editor has raised issues over the factual accuracy of the above article, stating that since Cyprus did not go independant until 1960 , "Antonis Georgiades" could have never been a minister in 1959. Since the editor who initially created is blocked as a sockpuppet i believe this article might be vandalism or blantant misinformation. Could anyone verify this? While this is technically incorrect, according to www.mcw.gov.cy/mcw/mcw.nsf/dmlministers_en/dmlministers_en?opendocument he was minister from 1959, even though he would have still taken up his position under the British. Passportguy (talk) 03:26, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Although we celebrate the establishment of the republic of Cyprus at 1960, the declaration actually happened in 1959... The coat of arms also has 1960. I don't know why this happened... In my opinion 1960 sounds like a better a number... Probably they also had in mind that after 55-59, a new era came to the island... 1960... TomasNY (talk) 22:47, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Cyprus geography stubs

Hello,

I recently created a couple of hundred geography stubs, mainly on villages in Nicosia, Famagusta & Kyrenia districts. The other districts, especially Paphos and Limassol still need a lot of work, so if anyone wants to help, feel free to do so ! Stubs complete

Even though it seems a bit like I'm talking to myself here : All districts are now complete. However the stubs still need a lot for work. The following could be added :

• Postal codes
• Names of mayors
• Links to official municipality websites
• Population data for towns in the North
• Turkish names for Turkish Cypriot villages in the south (preferably not the generic names created post-1974)
• Generally more info in the text section to get these articles beyond stub status.

I am more than sure that locals would find easier to edit the articles rather than beginning it from scratch... Record chart

I frequently see people adding a "Cyprus Singles Chart" to song articles, and so far as I know, there isn't such a thing. Can someone point out a record chart that:

1. Is published by a known authority, not an anonymous website
2. If it contains airplay, contains airplay from multiple networks
3. If it contains sales, contains sales from multiple vendors

If someone can point me to it, I'll verify it and add it to our list of recommended charts.—Kww(talk) 15:31, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
