WP 1.0 bot announcement
This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:11, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced living people articles bot
User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.
The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Cryptozoology/Archive 5/Unreferenced BLPs<<<
If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.
Thank you.
- Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Cryptozoology/Archive 5/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
- There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.
- If you have any questions or concerns, visit User talk:DASHBot/Wikiprojects. Okip 01:09, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Image copyright problem
Hi. Just wanted to give you guys a courtesy heads up. I'm concerned about the copyright status of the image your project is using; after receiving an invitation to join (not entirely sure why, although it's always nice to feel welcome :)), I visited it at Commons and see that it is a zoo display in the U.S. that has been licensed by the photographer. I'm afraid this is likely to be an unusable derivative work, since the museum that set up the artistic display owns copyright in its composition. I've tagged it for a Commons admin to evaluate. Sorry if it is, as I suspect, unretainable. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:14, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
- Oh, well, the good news is that you've only been using that image since July 16th, so maybe its loss won't be that catastrophic. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:16, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
- Appreciate your efforts and thank you for improving the legality of our content!--Gniniv (talk) 02:43, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
Bot Help
Xenobot Mk V to tag articles in project scope and/or auto-assess unassessed articles
A request has been made to tag & auto-assess articles in the scope of this project based on categories and/or auto-assess the project's unassessed articles.
To auto-assess, Xenobot Mk V (talk · contribs) looks for a {{stub}} template on the article, or inherits the class rating from other project banners (see here for further details).
Feel free to raise any questions or concerns regarding this process. The task will commence after 72 hours if there are no objections.

Cryptids articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Cryptids articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

WikiProject cleanup listing
I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 20:15, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Recent changes were made to citations templates (such as {{citation}}, {{cite journal}}, {{cite web}}...). In addition to what was previously supported (bibcode, doi, jstor, isbn, ...), templates now support arXiv, ASIN, JFM, LCCN, MR, OL, OSTI, RFC, SSRN and Zbl. Before, you needed to place |id=
(or worse {{arxiv|0123.4567}}
|url=http://arxiv.org/abs/0123.4567
), now you can simply use |arxiv=0123.4567
, likewise for |id=
and {{JSTOR|0123456789}}
|url=http://www.jstor.org/stable/0123456789
→ |jstor=0123456789
.
The full list of supported identifiers is given here (with dummy values):
- {{cite journal |author=John Smith |year=2000 |title=How to Put Things into Other Things |journal=Journal of Foobar |volume=1 |issue=2 |pages=3–4 |arxiv=0123456789 |asin=0123456789 |bibcode=0123456789 |doi=0123456789 |jfm=0123456789 |jstor=0123456789 |lccn=0123456789 |isbn=0123456789 |issn=0123456789 |mr=0123456789 |oclc=0123456789 |ol=0123456789 |osti=0123456789 |rfc=0123456789 |pmc=0123456789 |pmid=0123456789 |ssrn=0123456789 |zbl=0123456789 |id={{para|id|____}} }}
Obviously not all citations needs all parameters, but this streamlines the most popular ones and gives both better metadata and better appearances when printed. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 02:41, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
Request for input in discussion forum
Given the closely linked subjects of the various religion, mythology, and philosophy groups, it seems to me that we might benefit from having some sort of regular topical discussion forum to discuss the relevant content. I have put together the beginnings of an outline for such discussion at Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion/2011 meeting, and would very much appreciate the input of any interested editors. I am thinking that it might run over two months, the first of which would be to bring forward and discuss the current state of the content, and the second for perhaps some more focused discussion on what, if any, specific efforts might be taken in the near future. Any and all input is more than welcome. John Carter (talk)

Request for Comment: Capitalization of common names of animal species
Hello WikiProject members and others. As part of a discussion at WikiProject Animals, a number of editors have indicated that the presentation of the current guidelines on the capitalization of common names of species is somewhat unclear.
We wish to clarify and confirm existing uncontroversial guidelines and conventions, and present them in a "quick-reference" table format, for inclusion into the guidelines for the capitalization of common names of species. Please take a moment to visit the draft, and comment at talk. Your input is requested to determine whether or not this table is needed, and to ensure that it is done in the best way possible. Thank you. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:43, 16 September 2011 (UTC) |
Proposed MOS for Religion
There is now a proposed general Manual of Style for Religion and other articles relating to ethoses or belief systems at Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion/Manual of style. Any input would be welcome. I personally believe at least one of the reasons why many articles in this field have been as contentious as they have been is because of lack of such guidelines, and would very much welcome any input from others to help come up with some generally acceptable solutions to some of these problems. There seemed to be a bit of trouble in the past relating to the wolpertinger, which was originally believed to be a cryptid and then proved to be fake. Another user made two edits removing what they believed was influenced by cryptozoology. While one was, the other left me a bit puzzled as the whole infobox, including the picture, was removed. While these incidents have since stopped and there were only a couple I was wondering what your opinion on the situation was at the WikiProject. öBrambleberry of RiverClan 21:56, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
Overdone Sasquatch material on Klemtu
Please see Klemtu,_British_Columbia#Folklore in relation to tidying it up, I find it overdone and wonder about COPYVIO......material like this could be added to dozens, if not hundreds, of places in BC......to me this comes across like a plug for John Green's book, also. I imagine your WikiProject may have guidelines about this kind of material. Also to note saying what native people say, without having cites from native sources is contrary to guidelines from {{NorthAmNative}}. - Why is a seperate project even needed? I doubt it will attract more editors, since even this one seeems to be dead. FunkMonk (talk) 10:34, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

Merge
as most of the projects are all but dead, and as the few people left are in all three, shouldn't we merge this and WP:PSI with WP:PARA? we could make then the Cryptzoology and Parapsychology task forces respectively. -- Lee Tru. 13:45, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
- I suppose it's as good an idea as any - the problem is that cryptozoology covers such a broad range of subjects, from the downright mythological, through phantom black dogs etc to physical animals that would be covered by mainstream zoology if proven. Since most will not have been proven (and will probably never be proven), there's no real problem with throwing them all under the paranormal umbrella. Simon Burchell (talk) 14:38, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
- Support. FunkMonk (talk) 14:50, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
- Weak support. I recognize that there is a bit of a difference between scientific cryptozoology, and some of the less-scientific Bigfoot-type cryptozoology, which might not be necessarily paranormal, but if it brings in more editors, that's fine with me. I guess the question would be would the projects remain separate work groups or task forces within one overall project, like done by WP:MILHIST and others, and, if so, which would be the main project of the merged groups? I could probably adjust the banner of the parent project if I had an idea which banner would be used. John Carter (talk) 22:47, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
- Okay thanks or the support. I guess this project is not so dead after all. -- Lee Tru. 10:28, 3 July 2013 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
WikiProject X is live!
Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Don't tag every other famous prehistoric animal as part of this project
Some editors are tagging prehistoric animals left and right, but this is ridiculous, since somewhere, at some point, someone has probably claimed to see living representatives of pretty much every extinct animal ever. That doesn't make good reason for tagging them as part of this project, rather, there should be major cryptozoological literature dealing with the relevant animals for them t be tagged. FunkMonk (talk) 18:44, 10 September 2017 (UTC)
- On a similar note, animals that were discovered before cryptozoology was even a field, such as komodo dragon and okapi, do not belong in this project. FunkMonk (talk) 12:26, 20 October 2017 (UTC)
Previously Listed Cryptids to Be Added
Hello. I've noticed that there is a large portion of articles that should be classified into this WikiProject. Specifically, there are articles on animals that were previously listed as cryptids or extinct that were discovered. Article on extinct animals that are purported to be alive should also be included as well. These should fit under this project because of this but have not been. Here is a list of animals that were previously listed as cryptids and extinct animals purported to be alive that need to be listed under this project if they aren't already. This also includes extinct animals theorized to be responsible for sightings of cryptids as well (sources were found in Cryptozoology A to Z)--Paleface Jack (talk) 16:52, 11 September 2017 (UTC):
- Giant Forest Hog- Previously listed cryptid.
- Giant Panda- Previously listed cryptid.
- King Cheetah- Previously listed cryptid (found under Cheetah article).
- Megalogon- A purported sighting in 1918.
- Megatherium aka Giant Sloth- Purported sightings.
- Mountain Nyala- Previously listed cryptid.
- American Lion- Purported sightings and scientific claims of survival.
- Smilodon aka Sabre-Toothed Cat- Purported sightings.
We can only get these classified under the Cryptozoology Project if we can add enough information that would classify it as such without compromising the article's status. That is if it isn't in the article already.--Paleface Jack (talk) 17:27, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
- Sheesh, no, animals that were discovered before cryptozoology was even invented were not "previously listed as cryptids". This is complete nonsense. One or two purported modern sightings does not make an animal that actually existed a "cryptid" either. FunkMonk (talk) 12:27, 20 October 2017 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
WikiProjects should not promote pseudosciences, but cover
Currently, this project reflects its historical purpose, which was until recently to promote the pseudoscience and subculture of cryptozoology. Now that Wikipedia's coverage of the pseudoscience reflects that of mainstream sources (cryptozoology), it's time to take a look at exactly why this project exists. I'll be going through the project to ensure that it is not promoting pseudoscience, but rather providing coverage of the topic of cryptozoology. :bloodofox: (talk) 22:52, 8 February 2020 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.
