IATA code in airlines destination list
[edit]Hello, I'd like to permit people to leave IATA code inside airlines dest list, as they are useful to translate into another language. For instance, it is quicker and simpler to translate airports pages thanks to a model {{Aéroport|code=JFK}} in french wikipedia (and perhaps other languages) than to manually translate John F. Kennedy International Airport into Aéroport international de New York-John F. Kennedy as English is frequently more up-to-date than French wikipedia.

- Wikipedia is not a travel guide. Furthermore, guidelines for destination tables are clear at WP:AIRLINE-FLEET-LIST.--Jetstreamer Talk 12:54, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
---Forgive me, I agree it is not a travel guide, yet arlines dest lists needs to be uptodate in any language with a smooth process. Leaving IATA code helps much in this translating work. And if WP is not a travel guide, then why are there list of destinations at airlines pages ? Seriously? --Bouzinac (talk) 12:59, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
- Destinations lists exist because the number of cities served by an airline, current and past, is encyclopedic.--Jetstreamer Talk 14:09, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
Destinations linking
[edit]In my opinion, having destinations tables filled with wikilinks to articles about countries, states and cities runs counter to MOS:OVERLINK, which states that "names of major geographic features, locations (e.g. United States, London, New York City, France, Berlin)...are not usually linked" and "the function of links is to clarify, not emphasize; do not create links in order to draw attention to certain words". In recent months I have made edits to several destinations tables that contained IATA and ICAO codes (still more than two hundred of those, if you are feeling like you need to find something to do), at the same time reducing WLs to there only being links to the relevant airport articles. I see no benefit in linking to China or California or Copenhagen in a destinations list (especially not twenty times in the case of a country's name) and I think the style guide here ought to be amended to reflect the MOS - i.e. remove the country/state/city WLs from the examples, with a note to not include them. - Hi, don't forget that these tables need to be sorted. So all information needs to keep link + make sure any airport exist (have a watch at red links).--Bouzinac (talk) 08:54, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
- Bouzinac, I do not understand what you mean. Could you explain further please? YSSYguy (talk) 13:27, 11 January 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, every airport should be wikilinked (blue). However, compare the amount of wikilinks in the following lists:
- Emirates destinations: all countries and all cities
- EgyptAir destinations: no countries but all cities
- Etihad Airways destinations: neither countries nor cities
- Which one do you think looks best? See also MOS:DL. Michael! (talk) 21:03, 25 May 2019 (UTC)

Airline destinations
[edit]On Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation/Style guide/Layout (Airlines), the naming convention says that airline destinations should be in the (Name of airline) destinations format, for example American Airlines destinations. I think the naming convention should be changed to List of (Name of airline) destinations format, for example List of American Airlines destinations because the articles are more of list articles. 2601:183:101:58D0:14B:BBC0:133D:DB71 (talk) 17:41, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
confusion
[edit]See Talk:Ravn Alaska and Talk:Flight Alaska. Somehow Yute Air was renamed, bought by Ravn, went out of business forever, had a plane crash, and is buying Ravn's former assets, in that order. Needs to be untangled. Beeblebrox (talk) 22:00, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
How to resolve conflicting destination counts
[edit]I recently noticed that multiple sources list conflicting information for the number of destinations served by an airline, in this example, EgyptAir:
source | domestic | international | total | countries |
---|---|---|---|---|
EgyptAir (WP:PRIMARY) | 13 | 65 | 78 | not given |
flightconnections | 10 | 70 | 80 | 52 |
ch-aviation | not given | not given | 87 | 54 |
All information in the above table was retrieved 6 Jun 2021 from the links given
Only 'flightconnections' lists the date as of which the information is considered current and none of the sources (unless paywalled at ch-aviation) list which dates are covered by that information. In other words it is unclear if the numbers given represent total destinations for flights leaving today, for all flights this week/month/quarter, through the end of the published schedule or some other constraint.
I expect both of the secondary sources are somehow analyzing the published flight schedule to calculate their numbers ('flightconnections' even provides the list) which may could make them preferred over the primary source. On the other hand, the primary source may be incorporating planned route additions (i.e. routes for which tickets are currently being sold but flights haven't yet operated) or removals which make it the preferred source.
Bottom line, reducing "destinations served" to a single number is a difficult thing even among published sources, let alone WP editors. It's further complicated by the frequency with which this information changes. Are there any guidelines for how to resolve the reported differences? --N8 23:55, 6 June 2021 (UTC)
adding colspan
[edit]hi all wikipedian and aviation geeks!! I just wanna ask and clarify that is it necessary to add colspan on some pages at airline and destination table?? for example Singapore?.. hoping to make it clear because I kinda remove/reverted some of the edits. plus sorry for my grammar hope you'll understand! - I also need an answer about what rules we should follow. There is a small group of users removing destination information from several airlines, with the justification that there was a consensus on a specific page a long time ago, as if this were a precedent for deleting all others. But there was never any broad debate on the subject, only a small restricted group. And according to the airline guide (Wikipedia:WikiProject_Aviation/Style_guide/Layout_(Airlines)#Destinations), we can include the destination table. ErickCF (talk) 05:45, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- We need to do a new RFC on them as the old one was from 2018 until then more will get deleted. CHCBOY (talk) 18:43, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
