Short List

[edit]

This Companies requested articles list is currently the #2 largest RA page. Many editors are doing great jobs keeping the list in scope and tidy, tip-o-the-hat to you all. But this list is huuuuuuge! Finding notable companies within the list is a time consuming process.

I'm proposing we make a 'Short List' box near the top of the page. The purpose is to list a few company entries that have good supporting references, and would most likely survive an AFD. This will be an easy picking grounds for editors wishing to create new articles. I'll be bold and create this so folks can test if it's a good idea or not. See Wikipedia:Requested articles/Business and economics/Companies/Short. Any thoughts? -- Eclipsed (talk) (email) 09:37, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Short list experiment completed. It's been about a year, and no one seemed to use the short list, so I've removed it. -- 1Wiki8........................... (talk) 20:51, 14 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

page question

[edit]

Hi , is anyone working on this page? Is it ok just to start reviewing and rejecting the worthless ones in regards to wp:policy and guidelines? Govindaharihari (talk) 21:04, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Go for it – your help would be appreciated. User:Eclipsed did something similar in August last year. —Bruce1eetalk 04:50, 4 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Split

[edit]

Oh my, this page is big. Tops the list of Wikipedia:WikiProject Requested articles/Page sizes. Editing is slooooow with such a huge page. Perhaps time to split into two pages, like:

Thoughts? -- 1Wiki8........................... (talk) 12:26, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, the page does need to be split, although perhaps we need 3 or 4 subpages, because with just 2 they will still be quite big. BTW, the A-J/K-Z split you suggest, is that based on the number of entries, or their total size? —Bruce1eetalk 12:42, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
just based on very rough scrolling to middle of the list ;) Splitting into 3 or 4 subpages is a good idea. -- 1Wiki8........................... (talk) 12:50, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
So a 4 split might look like:
(based just on split of alphabet) -- 1Wiki8........................... (talk) 13:23, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That looks fine to me. —Bruce1eetalk 13:26, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Testing:

Page sizes
shortcut Page Bytes
WP:RA/CO /Business and economics/Companies 322
/Business and economics/Companies/A-E 306,533
/Business and economics/Companies/F-L 196,081
/Business and economics/Companies/M-S 235,627
/Business and economics/Companies/T-Z 242,588

-- 1Wiki8........................... (talk) 13:45, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

testing toc:

-- 1Wiki8........................... (talk) 13:57, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That all seems to be working fine. I take it when the project page is updated to reflect these changes, all it will consist of are the instructions and the TOC. —Bruce1eetalk 15:21, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yup. Just updated the main page and header. The /Header Template is included on all pages now, and will need some work to make it pretty. -- 1Wiki8........................... (talk)

Results of the Split

[edit]

The Split of the Companies request list is done. Continue discussion here...

And still todo: setup page protection on the new pages (I guess via Wikipedia:Requests for page protection, unless there is an admin around reading this?) -- 1Wiki8........................... (talk) 21:08, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

..And all 4 new pages are now configured for pending changes. -- 1Wiki8........................... (talk) 21:58, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That's better, the pages are loading much quicker now. Thanks for all your hard work. —Bruce1eetalk 04:47, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Tag Test

[edit]

Let's test tagging entries. The basic idea is reviewers ("Clerks") can add a quick tag to a listing with their opinion on likely notability. Appropriating some existing templates to use:

 Clerk declined

{{Decline}} - not a notable company, to be removed from list

 Unlikely

{{Unlikely}} - probably not a notable company, to be removed soon

 Likely

{{Likely}} - probably a notable company

 Clerk endorsed

{{Endorse}} - a notable company

Maybe useful, maybe not. -- 1Wiki8........................... (talk) 18:21, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Alhannah Islamic Clothing

[edit]

Hi all,

We were trying to add this entry:

but Alhannah and Bruce1ee disagree about the subject sources availability. Particularly we can't use a single source because it may be inaccurate -- we need information coming from multiple independent sources, so that it is Verifiable.

I propose to discuss here before re-adding the entry onto the page.

Hello again!

I have more sources I would like for you to see.

This first link (https://thetake.com/product/4454/alhannah-mens-embroidered-vest-iron-man-3) shows clothing that we provided for the movie Iron Man, including turbans, salwar kameez and vests. Iron Man was just one of the many movies that we provided costumes for.

We also provided clothing for the following movies (I have yet to find reliable sources for these ones, but if I do I will make sure to provide them)  :

• Syriana - Alhannah Clothing is worn is scenes

• Jar Head

• Five Fingers Alhannah Clothing worn by Lawrence Fishburne

• In the made for tv series Lost clothing is featured in scenes depicting Said in Iraq.

• Charlie Wilson’s War

• Ironman 1 the turban, salwar kameez and vest.

This next source (https://atlantic-newspaper.wikispaces.com/Cultural+differences) is an article that demonstrates the difference between two major types of islamic clothing, and as you can see we're recognised as an authority for Iraqi Islamic Clothing.

In this next source (https://books.google.com/books?id=yO1eCwAAQBAJ&pg=PA154&lpg=PA154&dq=alhannah+islamic+clothing+links&source=bl&ots=7DPAfHCmi0&sig=QQb1PYieAs7I87aLw9sURFirhu0&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjcmMmOio3RAhVQ7mMKHYabAr0Q6AEIUDAG#v=onepage&q=alhannah&f=false), an author references us in their book as a reliable source of islamic clothing.

This source (http://www.arabfinder.net/connecticut/broad-brook/clothes-accessories/alhannah-islamic-clothing) shows us as a confirmed arab owned business.

This final source shows a young lady wearing clothes sold by AlHannah (https://www.flickr.com/photos/justin/35234428/in/photostream/)

COI Disclosure

[edit]

I just added the recommendation that a page be created for CareDash.com. I do have a conflict of interest--I work for the company--and this is why I did not try to create the page myself. I hope I was able to show that CareDash has accrued enough notice from reliable, independent sources to justify a page created for it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.207.230.179 (talk) 19:53, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I also have a CoI declaration to make. Snatchbot contacted me as a freelancer to ask I make their Wiki page. They do seem notable and I have found several independent references. But I would prefer someone who has no interest to make the page. Thanks.

Companies removed

[edit]

Hey All,

I have three companies I am trying to get write ups for and I listed them a couple days ago and now they are all removed so I obviously did something wrong.

I reread the rules and can't seem to figure it out. Here they are again:

  • Belize Real Estate MLS 99 Boca Del Rio Drive San Pedro, Ambergris Caye Belize, Central America 1-888-980-6448. Belize Real Estate MLS has every property & business for sale in Belize. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

  • Avis Cart Rental 60 Laguna Drive San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize 501-627-5257. They offer golf cart rentals for San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize. Their prices are low and their service is high. [11]

NOINDEX these pages

[edit]

Many entries on these pages are promotional, and the overall quality is low. To make these pages less attractive as advertising space and maintain search quality, I propose adding {{NOINDEX}} to each of these pages. I will do so in a week if there are no objections. MarginalCost (talk) 16:29, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

With no objections, I have added the template to each page. MarginalCost (talk) 01:29, 4 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

David Weekley Homes

[edit]

My COI prevents me from working on the David Weekley Homes article. I wanted to note here that it appears as though an employee had made an attempt to take the post-it-myself shortcut at some point, but failed to disclose their COI, maintain a neutral tone, establish notability, and used a single-purpose account to do so. I believe the outside sources provided in the article creation request establish notability and the existence of the articles found on list of home builders establishes a precedent for this type of company's inclusion. I will not be working on this article, and have educated my co-workers on the Wikipedia rules and directed them away from any form of article creation or revision.

Request for Article on Ideagen Plc - UK-headquartered, global software firm

[edit]

Hi,

In the interests of transparency, I work in the marketing department for a large software company in the UK called Ideagen Plc. My role is that of PR and Media Relations Manager.

I am looking to have a page created on Ideagen as I believe the organisation deserves to be mentioned on the site and we have received enough significant, reliable, independent and third party sources to merit our inclusion - of course that will be for others to decide. Although UK-based, we are a global organisation with operations in the UK, Europe, North America, SE Asia and UAE and experience daily pieces of media coverage - both locally and nationally.

I have read through the guidance for editors etc and realised that it is best to Request and Article rather than look to create one ourselves as it is bad practice and, being honest, I probably would fall into the trap of not being neutral enough. So any help and guidance is gratefully received.

If someone can offer guidance - or even point me in the direction of how best to achieve what I'm looking for - then that would be great.

Below, I have included some selections from third-party, reliable sources...

Company website is www.ideagen.com and Ideagen specialises in Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) software but with specific expertise in the Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental (QHSE) and Audit, Risk and Compliance (ARC) fields.

Request for Article or Help

[edit]

Hi there, I work for a PR company (I have disclosed in my profile) and I have been asked to create an article page on a client called Ethique. It is a notable business as it is the world's first zero waste full range beauty brand. The founder has a page about her (Brianne West), but we want to be able to have the business up as well.

As I have read all of the rules, I know that I am not really able to create a page on this and was wondering if someone, who doesn't have a conflict of interest, would be able to start one? I could then write in the talk box of the article some suggested edits + inclusion.

I did submit Ethique a while ago to be written about, but as the list is so massive I don't know if anyone has seen it.

There are plenty of reliable sources out there to reference and Ethique is up for a few awards this year as well.

Any help would be appreciated! Mazthecat (talk) 15:39, 13 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I can see your request for Ethique here, and it seems to be supported by reliable, independent, 3rd party sources. All you can do is wait. Remember that Wikipedia is a volunteer service, which means that there are no people dedicated to creating articles, only those who volunteer to do so at any time they wish. So it is impossible to tell when your request will be fulfilled. I hope this helps. —Bruce1eetalk 06:29, 13 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Request for article or help

[edit]

Hello,

First and foremost, I would like to disclose that I am an employee of Western Financial Group. I hope I am posting in the correct place to request an article on Wikipedia for Western. Our company's founder (Scott Tannas) has a page and we are hoping for a separate one for the company. Western Financial Group is a diversified Canadian insurance broker network with 183 locations nation wide. We are headquartered in High River, Alberta. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'm excited to learn. If I should post anything else in this space, please let me know InsuranceFan89 (talk) 20:07, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Legal & General America request for article w/draft

[edit]

Note of COI, I work for Legal & General America and have added a request to add an article for this company, and to connect it as a subsidiary of Legal &General as a means to clarify the relationship the US arm has with the parent organization based in the UK and to include the historic information on the founding and acquisition of the US subsidiary brands Banner Life Insurance Company and William Penn Life Insurance Company of New York. I'm not certain if I have completed the request appropriately but have included a request for support on my user talk page at User_talk:KHLGA as well as a draft article for consideration at User:KHLGA/New_article —Preceding undated comment added 19:10, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

Turn off pending changes page protection?

[edit]

cc @NeilN:

Howdy. I'm a pending changes reviewer. I noticed that Wikipedia:Requested articles/Business and economics/Companies/M-S is pending changes protected, and requires a pending changes reviewer to manually approve any changes from IP's or newly registered users.

I'm wondering if this was intentional? At first glance, seems like it might be unnecessary for a page that intentionally wants a lot of new users and IP users posting on it.

Also, as pending changes reviewers, our job is just to make sure the edits are made in good faith. As I understand it, it isn't really our place to evaluate the notability of their applications or anything like that. I'm sure you guys have your own triaging process, maybe we can save some work and avoid double triaging.

Thoughts? Thanks for your time. –Novem Linguae (talk) 21:41, 30 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Novem Linguae and NeilN: I feel this page, and the others in the set, viz. Companies/A-E, Companies/F-L, Companies/T-Z and Companies, should remain pending change protected. The big problem with lists like this is that requests are added without reliable, independent, third party sources, which is a requirement clearly stated at the top of the page. These lists are already quite long and left unchecked will quickly grow out of control. Initially there was only one page for company requests at Wikipedia:Requested articles/Business and economics/Companies, but because it had grown far too large, it was split into four sub-pages (see the discussion near the top of this talk page). —Bruce1eetalk 08:18, 1 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Bruce1ee: Ah. Sounds reasonable. Now that I understand it better, I will try my best to help. –Novem Linguae (talk) 08:48, 1 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, any help would be appreciated. —Bruce1eetalk 08:57, 1 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I can help with clerking

[edit]
@Bruce1ee: I might even be able to help with clerking. Interested? If so, what's the work instruction? Delete completely if less than X reliable sources, clerk decline if Y, clerk endorse if Z? Thank you. –Novem Linguae (talk) 19:11, 1 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Novem Linguae: Thanks for offering to help. Depending on how much time you want to spend on this, here are some of the things you can do:
  • First off, remove all requests that have no reliable third party sources, that is no sources at all, or only primary sources.
  • Next, check that the third party sources are not trivial, that is they only briefly mention the company without giving any details; there should be a least a couple of third party sources with in-depth coverage, otherwise remove the request.
  • If you want to dig deeper, check whether the company requested satisfies Wikipedia's notability requirements for the creation of an article; often requests with no in-depth third party sources are not suitable candidates for articles.
Do as much, or as little, as you feel comfortable with. I hope this helps. —Bruce1eetalk 08:46, 2 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Bruce1ee: Hey Bruce. So I wrote a JavaScript tool that can go through and delete all WP:RA's that have only 0 or 1 sources. I've tested it, looks like it works well. It looks like for the company pages, it will delete about 80 entries per page. Here's some screenshots. [1][2][3]

  • Am I all clear to start mass deleting? Please read my reservations below about automating the process.
  • Do you want me to just do the WP:RA company pages, or do you want me to run the tool on other pages as well? Which ones? This discussion only relates to the company pages. I'm not familiar with the requirements of other WP:RA pages.
  • I assume deleting entries with 0 or 1 links is fine, based on your earlier instructions. Question. Do you want to delete entries with 2 links? Stick to 0 or 1 links. WP:MULTSOURCES says "A single significant independent source is almost never sufficient for demonstrating the notability of an organization." Two in-depth third party sources could well be sufficient.
  • Can I delete {{Reflist-talk}} from the company pages and other large WP:RA pages? Reflist-talk is the references footer box at the bottom of each section. The reference boxes double the display size of the page. I never use the reflist myself, I just hover over the inline cites. Yes. I'm not sure sure why they were added in the first place.
  • Let me know if you need me to program/automate anything else. I could do a URL blacklist/whitelist, for example. Which could then delete poor quality URL's, or make a comment. etc. etc. Lots of ideas/potential.

Thanks a lot. Looking forward to your feedback. –Novem Linguae (talk) 18:48, 2 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Novem Linguae: I didn't know you were going to use a script to do this. (BTW I can't open those screendumps, my security suite reports a "malicious download". It could well be a false positive, but I'm not prepared to take a chance.) I'm not sure that automating the process will work. A variety of different styles are used for references, from bare url's to well-formatted citations with templates. Occasionally references are just broken. Also, each request should be bulleted, but some are not, while others have linebreaks within a request. Will your script be able to handle all these abnormalities?
I've responded to your individual questions above in red. —Bruce1eetalk 08:16, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Bruce1ee: I didn't know I was going to write a script either. I went to start working on this, and the idea came to me. Try this new link for screenshots (different host). [4]
My script handles most of your cases. Your comment made me think of a case I had forgotten, which I will fix right now. # of deleted entries changed from 80 to 64.
I believe my script handles all those cases now. So first my script dices the page into chunks. The marker between each chunk is == {{ and *. Then the script looks for *[[company name]] at the beginning of the chunk. If it doesn't find that, it ignores the chunk (safely skips, no delete). If it does find that, then it starts counting URL's within the chunk. I simplified the URL search, it just counts the # of times http occurs in the chunk.
In the case of a missing bullet, the script treats the missing bullet line as part of the previous bullet. Which is safe, because if the sum of those two entry's URL counts is less than 2, then both entries need to be deleted anyway.
[5] Here's a demonstration of the counting RegEx. Each blue highlight in the body text is a count. You can do a quick spot check, paste your own code, etc. if you want.
Here's a test page in my userspace. Here's the before and after diff. I posted the tool's debug log (an explanation of what it's doing) on the talk page.
After talking this out, I feel pretty good about it. Also the test page looks fine at first glance. Thoughts? Thank you. –Novem Linguae (talk) 10:06, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Follow up thought. Does anybody cite books instead of URL's? I didn't see any when I spot checked, but if they do, I might need to add that case in. –Novem Linguae (talk) 10:39, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Got this working, I think. [6]Novem Linguae (talk) 11:21, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I just found a "clerk endorse" with only 1 ref. I'll add an exception for clerk endorses. –Novem Linguae (talk) 11:00, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Novem Linguae: If you're happy that your script is working, then go ahead and use it. But please monitor it closely. It's quite possible that new requests may introduce something you haven't thought of. —Bruce1eetalk 11:55, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Bruce1ee and Moonythedwarf: I tweaked it a bit more and created a "safelist". Certain things like {{endorse}}, {{likely}}, the word "draft", links to non-en wikis, and links to google search results were saved no matter what.
Cleanup complete. Probably deleted about 150 entries. Another editor even jumped in to help. That's awesome.
I have some other ideas, but I'll give everybody's brains a chance to rest from the wall of text I posted above. Thanks everyone. –Novem Linguae (talk) 14:59, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Novem Linguae, I've been meaning to clean for a bit, and now seemed like a good time. Glad to help.
I'll be removing anything that's blatantly undersourced that your script might have missed. I do wish other PCRs would be better about rejecting requests immediately. Just earlier on the M-S page someone got through just by putting their request through twice and fishing for a different reviewer worked out for them. (I promptly fixed that) —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 15:02, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
here's an idea: Try and filter refs for bad sources using Blablubbs regexes. See their page User:Blablubbs/unreliable-rules.jsmoonythedwarf (Braden N.) 15:05, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Moonythedwarf, the pending changes reviewers helping us is tricky. Their job is to revert blatant vandalism, BLP, and copyvio. Most of them probably don't know about our extra requirements. –Novem Linguae (talk) 21:48, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Novem Linguae, I do, being a reviewer myself. I wonder if an edit notice would help. —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 00:44, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Novem Linguae: I've checked some of the diffs from your script runs, and they look fine. I think it going to help a lot. Thank you and Moonythedwarf for all your hard work here. —Bruce1eetalk 17:26, 3 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
My pleasure. It was a fun project. I recently turned it into a userscript in case anybody needs it. User:Novem Linguae/Scripts/RequestedArticleSifter.jsNovem Linguae (talk) 19:54, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

scanning for quality of refs

[edit]

I'm in the mididle of a complementary project, looking to sse if the quality of the refs is such that there is any chance of meeting NCORP, based on my experience at WP:AFC. I've just done A-E; the method I'm using is to check the actual wikitext directly and see where the sources come from--if they are all trivial or PR or not 3rd party, , or they don't give substantial information, or the contentwould inevitably be G11, I'm deleting them--unless I think they might be interesting or mergable. I'll continue as I have the time but I canot promise to work here regularly. DGG ( talk ) 05:54, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Going faster than I thought. I'll put a note when Ive finished this round. please note that if I leave something in, it does not necessarily mean that I think there can be a viable article -- it just means that I am not entirely certain that it would be impossible. I'm not endorsing a creation or merge unless I say so specifically. DGG ( talk ) 06:27, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Glebe Farm - request for article

[edit]

Requested a page for Glebe Farm - notable as victors over Oatly in a significant trademark dispute in 2021 and one of the main oat milk brands in the UK. I work for their PR/marketing agency, hence connected / paid disclosures, and suggestion for page here rather than direct drafting. Hope I've added necessary sources and disclosures but please flag if further info is needed ElizHol (talk) 16:44, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@ElizHol. Hey there. Thank you for following our paid editor rules. Since you have followed our rules I am happy to help you. The requested articles project is inactive. I think a good first step would be to search Google News for quality articles about your company. Are there any that aren't just all quotes or an interview, aren't clearly based on a press release, are independent, and go into around 3 paragraphs of detail about the company? If you can find 3 such articles, feel free to share them here and I'll take a look. Once we verify these 3 articles pass WP:GNG, then your company is notable and we can look into next steps (helping you write a draft). But to save you time, let's make sure your company is notable first. Hope this helps. –Novem Linguae (talk) 00:38, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your quick reply and help! I added a brief precis with links to some main news stories (all independent and major news sources) under "G" which hopefully helps? Requested_articles/Business_and_economics/Companies/F-L#G These are probably the main articles from that: Oatly loses trademark case against family farm Meet the Cambridgeshire family farmers being sued by Oatly ‘Oatly misjudged me. I wasn’t having it’: Glebe Farm’s Philip Rayner on legal battles, publicity and climate Oatly takes Cambridgeshire family farm to court in trademark dispute Oatly loses trademark fight against British family firm selling ‘PureOaty’ drink Also, to note, Glebe Farm and the court case is mentioned on the Oatly page under History. Thanks again for your help ElizHol (talk) 09:35, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@ElizHol. Hey there. I find these sources a bit borderline. It appears to be significant coverage of the legal action, not the company. However it is probably worth a try to write a draft and submit it. Perhaps the draft and review process will help you discover better sources. This link will help get you started creating a draft. Drafts are different than articles - they are more protected from quick deletion, and once you "submit" it, an experienced editor will take a look at it. Please be patient, the wait time can be pretty long. One final tip: you don't need a big article with a ton of citations in order to get accepted. The key is to include citations to 3 good, WP:GNG-passing sources. Maybe throw in these 5. I'm envisioning like two paragraphs. It should be a summary of the sources, not an injection of material that you know because you work there (WP:OR). With all that said, I think this is borderline, so be prepared for this not to work. But I think it is worth a try. Hope this helps. –Novem Linguae (talk) 10:56, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Great, that makes total sense, thank you very much for the help! ElizHol (talk) 11:03, 19 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
