Jaknouse
[edit]User:Jaknouse passed away in 2021. There is an obituary here. gnu57 06:24, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the note. I've tagged the account and requested a global lock from the Stewards at Meta-Wiki. WhatamIdoing (talk) 15:21, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
- I have written [[a quick obituary, as I recognised his username from early page histories. Graham87 (talk) 08:42, 17 October 2024 (UTC)

Adding image to an entry
[edit]I had added an image to the entry for JarrahTree as they would not have wanted a photo of themselves published. They were a long-standing member and board member of our community, but another user has removed it without comment. As this is my first time posting an obituary, I'm assuming I have done something wrong? Could someone let me know why it might not have been appropriate for me to use the image? Thank you in anticipation. AlphaLemur (talk) 08:53, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- It's OK ... I'm blind so obviously am not the best person to comment directly, but I'd say that no image at all is better than anything besides an image of the person in a case like this. I made a further edit to the obituary (among others) because it's not just Wikimedia Australia that will mourn his loss but the entire Wikipedia community. The politics between the English Wikipedia and Wikimedia chapters can be interesting but that's a completely different topic. For now, know that I can probably speak for everyone here in saying that we'd much rather you let the community here know (as you did) than been less bold out of fear of doing something wrong. Just know that obituaries on these pages can and will be edited, just like almost anything else on this site. Graham87 (talk) 09:22, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- @AlphaLemur: Yes, as Graham surmises, an image of the WMAU logo does not really add anything to the obituary, and arguably detracts from what is clearly a very heartfelt remembrance of a great editor. If you'd like to include some image that is particular to JarrahTree while respecting their privacy, like a photo they took, I'd have no objection to that. But also there's nothing wrong with the obituary having no photo at all; a majority don't. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 09:32, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not going to add it myself, obviously, but the above comment brought to mind that the article about his username-sake tre has this image uploaded by him, taken in a part of Western Australia that I know was very dear to him. Something like that would be much better, I would say. Graham87 (talk) 09:39, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks @Graham87 and @Tamzin for taking the time to explain. I'll leave it for now and let someone else add an image if they want to. jarrahtree would actually be the first person I'd turn to ask for advice in these situations, so I was feeling at a bit of a loss. thanks again. AlphaLemur (talk) 09:56, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- I like Graham87's suggestion of adding the photograph of a jarrah tree, particularly since in my opinion it is a rather beautiful picture. It is a photograph taken by the editor "JarrahTree", as well as illustrating the origin of the username they chose. Would anyone else like to express an opinion? JBW (talk) 21:53, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- I also like that idea. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:09, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- I really like this idea too. I've added the image. Vertical space on WP:RIP entries is always an issue, though, so it might be good to crop out the asphalt at the bottom. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 23:32, 3 December 2024 (UTC)

TomCat4680
[edit]@Quistisffviii: I see that you've added an entry for TomCat4680 (talk · contribs). I see you're from around the same area, so if you knew him personally, I'm sorry for your loss. You didn't add any link to an obituary, but with a little Googling I think I've found one; it mentions his Wikipedia editing. Do you know if he was open about his real name on-wiki, or if he would have preferred it not be linked? -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 00:37, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Tamzin He was very private about his real name being used online and that was why I did not cite the obit. He was a good friend. Thank you. Quistisffviii (talk) 01:02, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- Okay, I'll leave it as-is then. I privately sent the obit to a steward, who locked his account, which is the most important administrative step, since it prevents accounts from being compromised at some later date. Again, sorry for your loss. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 01:08, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
