lettera27 is a non-profit foundation born in July 2006 and based in Milan, Italy. The foundation's mission is to support the right to literacy and education, and promote access to knowledge across the world and especially in developing countries. lettera27 is supported by private donors and Moleskine; in 2011-2012 lettera27 has received a support by Fondazione Cariplo for the project Share Your Knowledge. The foundation researches, documents and divulges information in relation to experiences that advocate the right to literacy and improve knowledge accessibility. Accordingly, lettera27 provides the tools necessary to produce ad hoc studies that can encourage an informed debate within the public opinion and among institutions in the wealthiest nations. According to lettera27, the right to education, free access to information, and the acknowledgment of the new resources and media for the sharing of knowledge should be some of the fundamental and undeniable principles for planetary citizenship. In order to attain these goals, the foundation conceives, plans, and undertakes cultural initiatives, publishing activities, and artistic events, linked to writing, reading, paper as a primary support, in its capacity of encouraging a dialogue with the internet and through long-distance communication. Specific interest is placed in those tools that have historically been part of and have encouraged the processes of cultural growth (cognitive artifacts), from pencils’ graphite to computers’ silicon. In the process of developing and carrying out its work, the Foundation is open to collaborations with other institutions, organizations, and individuals who are pursuing compatible goals; it raises funds from corporations and institutions that are interested in supporting the commitments and the ethos of the initiatives encouraged and undertaken, and its operative structures are designed and organized to be open to and encourage voluntary contributions by privates experts and professionals, who are capable of playing a part in the implementation of each of the initiatives. The structure of the Foundation is characterised by the sharing of responsibilities, skills, and powers among four main parties: donors, consultants, experts, and supporters. lettera27 is the promoter with the Africa Centre of wikiprojects such as Wikiafrica and Share Your Knowledge and has striken up agreements with GLAMs and Wikimedia chapters all around the world.
