The West Country Challenge
a contest/editathon for 8 August – 4 September 2016....

The area which will be covered by the contest A contest/editathon aimed at improving the quality and quantity of coverage of Bristol, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. The format will be based on Wales's successful Awaken the Dragon which saw over 1000 article improvements and creations and 65 GAs/FAs. As with the Dragon contest, the focus is more on improving core articles and breathing new life into those older stale articles and stubs which might otherwise not get edited in years. All contributions, including new articles, are welcome though. There is a budget of £250 ($330) in Amazon vouchers being put up for this. The idea will be to split most of it into 7, £30 for each county, with £10 awarded to the most productive editor who scores the most points each day. So for this if you produce a lot on one day you can instantly win something for your effort. If prizes aren't your thing, you can still contribute whatever you want anyway. Gloucester, Geography of Somerset, Clifton, St Ives, Exeter, Dorchester, Trowbridge. If multiple people make an effort to promote two the vouchers will be split accordingly as there's only £70 available in total (two people doing it would get £35 each), but the minimum requirement is 2 articles promoted. Collaboration is permitted of course and the winnings may be split (but multiple people will have had to have made significant contributions to claim) but the offer is there. Anybody who promotes two or more will be proclaimed one of the winners at the end of the month. The deadline is September 30 for nominating an article for GA. Claims for prizes below. Thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:09, 5 October 2016 (UTC) Rules All articles must be submitted between 0:00 on 8 August and 23:59 UK time on 4 September. If participating in the contest, all entries for each county must be submitted between 0:00 UK time on Day 1 and 23:59 UK time on Day 3 of each one, though for GAs the ruling is slightly different, see the scoring section. All articles must be related to Bristol, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. If participating in the contest (rather than contributing independently to any articles of your choice throughout), all articles must be related to the given county on the time scheduled and submitted on the relative county pages. Whoever improves the most core and stub content on the relative county on a given day will be rewarded with £10. This process will be repeated every day of the contest. Whoever works the hardest will be rewarded. To "destub" an article all you have to do is ensure that the final article is a minimum of 1.5 kb of readable prose with no unsourced statements or badly formatted sources. Prose count can be checked here. Remember to update the talk page to start class when destubbing. If working on a core article, you must ensure that you've added a minimum of 0.5kb of readable prose and fully cleaned up/checked the existing material and that the article is fully "clean" before submitting. If an article is bloated, it may be necessary to give it a considerable trim. Material rewritten will count towards the minimum prose added, so it may be that an article might end up shorter after the cleanup. All paragraphs and claims must be verifiable and well sourced. References are expected to be fully formatted, with consistent dates. Collaboration is permitted, but only between individuals who have signed up in the participants section. The same points will be given to each of the people who have significantly improved an article together, unless the collaboration is unintentional and the two editors accidentally edit the same article. For instance one contestant can't do some basic ref fixes of a stub and then another contestant expand it more fully and destub it and the two claim the same points, feeding off the work of the other contestant for more points. Each collaboration may be assessed differently if contributions between editors differ significantly. Scoring Any article with a ghastly tag or totally unsourced – 5 points Minor cleanup of article references without expansion – 5 points New article – 10 points (As the purpose of the contest is really reducing the stub count, please try to ensure that new entries are minimum 1.5 kb of readable prose.) Destubbing an article (minimum of 1.5kb readable prose in total) - 50 points A minimum 3 kb expansion and full article cleanup -25 points (if the article was a stub you'll only get the 25 points once) Uploading an original photograph (no geograph or flickr photos). Each photograph has to be of a different building to get points for each. – 5 points for any subject of the county contest which is currently running, 15 points for any photograph on the hotlist. Tackling a Core Article – 50 points A Good Article – 200 points. Though editors can nominate an article at any time during the contest, for the points to count an article must be nominated within the three day subcontest schedule relative to that county. The points will be given on the day that the article is nominated, even if nobody can review it until days later. However, if the article is worked on and not nominated/ready for nominating by the end of the three day subcontest then the points won't count towards that subcontest and will just be added to the main scoreboard. If an editor puts in a decent effort on one article in one day and nominates before the end of the day I (Dr. Blofeld) will do my very best to get that article reviewed on the day or get somebody else to review it so the points can count towards that day, though expect to have to wait a day or two. As long as the nominator doesn't nominate an underdeveloped article and think they can buy more time with editing it. Naturally it is fine for people not competing in the contest to improve and submit whatever articles they want from across the West Country, but points won't be given. All Good Articles should pass GA by the end of the Challenge to be included. For winning a mini County contest, the winner will be rewarded with a bonus 500 points, 200 points for 2nd and 100 points for third. Winning a County contest may prove to be vital to winning the overall Challenge towards the end. After each subcontest has concluded the winners will be announced and the points will be carried over to the main content scoreboard at the end of each set of three days. Remember that to scoop the £10 each day it is the number of points accumulated which counts. Whoever gets the most points from 0:00 GMT to 23:59 GMT of each day wins the prize. This contest is largely about basic improvements to important articles.
