- 1868 – American Indian Wars: George Armstrong Custer's 7th U.S. Cavalry attacked the encampment of Chief Black Kettle and the Cheyenne on the Washita River near present-day Cheyenne, Oklahoma.
- 1978 – The Kurdistan Workers' Party, which has been in conflict with Turkey over the formation of an autonomous Kurdish state, was founded.
- 1999 – The Labour Party defeated the governing National Party in the New Zealand general election, making the Labour Party's Helen Clark the first female to win the office of Prime Minister at an election.
- 2001 – The Hubble Space Telescope detected sodium in the atmosphere of the extrasolar planet HD 209458b (artist's impression pictured), the first planetary atmosphere outside our solar system to be measured.
- 2005 – French oral and maxillofacial surgeon Bernard Devauchelle performed the world's first partial face transplant on a living human, replacing Isabelle Dinoire's face, which had been mutilated by her dog.
- 511 – Upon the death of Clovis, King of the Franks, Gaul was divided among his four sons: Theuderic, Chlodomer, Childebert, and Chlothar.
- 1727 – The foundation stone of Jerusalem's Church (pictured) in Berlin was laid.
- 1940 – Second World War: At the Battle of Cape Spartivento, the Royal Navy engaged the Regia Marina near Sicily.
- 1978 – San Francisco mayor George Moscone and openly gay supervisor Harvey Milk were assassinated by supervisor Dan White.
- 2009 – A bomb exploded under a high-speed train travelling between Moscow and Saint Petersburg derailing it, killing 28 passengers and injuring 95 more.
