- 1949 - George Orwell's dystopic political novel Nineteen Eighty-Four was first published.
- 1953 - Flint-Worcester Tornadoes: A tornado hit in Flint, Michigan, killing 115. This was the last tornado to claim more than 100 lives.
- 1967 - Israel attacked U.S. intelligence ship USS Liberty, killing 34 Americans.
- 2001 - Popular editorial site suck.com published its final article: "Gone Fishin'"
