Know my Name project page

[edit]

Wikimedia Australia has partnered with the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) on its Know My Name (KMN) initiative, to increase understanding and appreciation of work by Australian women (cis and trans) artists. Know My Name celebrates Australian and international women artists and the significant contributions they make to Australia’s cultural life.

During 2020-21 Know My Name delivered a program of exhibitions, events, commissions, creative collaborations, publications and partnerships that highlight the diversity and creativity of women artists through history to the present day. Know My Name also signals a long-term commitment to gender equity by the National Gallery in future programming, collection development and organisational structures.

A 2023 analysis of biographies of Australians found that 19.9% were about women.[1] The Wikipedia Know My Name project aims to increase the number of articles on Wikipedia about Australian women artists. Volunteer editors have been trained by experienced Wikipedians and group editing sessions have been held since 2020.

Edit-a-thons: Edit-a-thons are usually in person events where interested people are taught by experienced Wikipedians how to write or add to Wikipedia articles. For Know My Name edit-a-thons, Wikimedia Australia and the National Gallery usually provide a list of Australian women artists for editors to research and write about.

The next Know My Name edit-a-thon will be held on Saturday 15 Mar 2025, at 1.00pm in the Gallery's Research Library. In connection with the exhibition, Anne Dangar and Ethel Carrick, this Wikipedia edit-a-thon will focus on Dangar, Carrick and their contemporaries: Stella Creed, Florence (Turner) Blake and Olive Kathleen Crane. A selected list of articles to edit is available on the list of Australian women artists page. You can register here for the edit-a-thon in 2025.

List of Australian women artists: WikiProject Australia has a list of Australian women artists who either need an article written about them or their article needs expanding. The general list is at the end of the page. Sometimes there will be a tailored shortlist at the top of the page for upcoming edit-a-thons.

There are also other lists where you can find names of Australian women artists. You may need to search these lists for the term "Australia": Women in Red/Artists (Wikidata redlinks), Women in Red/Artists (from crowdsourced information), Women in Red/Animators, Women in Red/Sculptors, Wiki List of Australian women artists, List of Indigenous Australian visual artists.
