  • awaits with anticipation* -- Natalinasmpf 17:52, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Well, I've been pretty busy for about the past week, Sam, and I bet you have been too, considering it seems you haven't contacted me to start Game 10. However, we do have a chess game to play. Seven out of the eight first round games are finished. In the last remaining first round game, a winning position (or losing depending on your point of view) has practically emerged, so this game will likely end rather soon. Three of the second round games are well underway. Natalinasmpf is awaiting with anticipation. In the interest of not delaying the chess tournament any further and not having both of us evicted from the tournament because of lengthy inaction, I went ahead and made the first move in our game. I know you had white in your previous game. If you have any objections let me know. I also noticed that your latest chess rating is an outstanding 1910 (must be expert), significantly better than anything I've ever been able to muster. Besides this tournament, the only chess tournaments I was ever in were just a couple local dormitory tournaments in college, where I lost in the first round. However, I plan to do my utmost to provide you with the chess challenge you deserve in such a tournament, and if possible even try to win. H Padleckas 03:01, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

It strikes me that a more appropriate page to place this comment is Sam Hocevar's talk page. I say this only because I myself had the unfortunate experience of noticing that my game had started without me being informed of such. JRM · Talk 13:23, 2005 Jun 8 (UTC)

Round one is complete. Ding ding! -- Natalinasmpf 22:58, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hello everybody! I am currently awfully busy with real life, but I think I can handle a game of chess. I will do my best to avoid huge gaps between my moves. Sam Hocevar 07:02, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I will be quite busy until June 26 or so myself, so you can space your moves out to almost but less than 24 hours per move. After that, I anticipate I will be less busy and hopefully can quicken the pace of the game then. H Padleckas 19:37, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
By the way, I am afraid I will be away for the July 2nd-3rd weekend, so I might break the 24h rule at this time. Sam Hocevar 19:56, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I thought the whole point of correspondence chess was so you can play a nice leisurely game. 205.217.105.2 21:33, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Guys, rules are good! Rules help control the fun! Sam Hocevar 09:45, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

What happened to the square colors ? I now see all-white squares.  :-/ H Padleckas 08:38, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Duh, I don't see how this could happen... According to Template:Chess position the template is hardcoded in the cell styles. Probably a bug in your browser that will disappear in mysterious circumstances! Sam Hocevar 08:48, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Oh, I got it. User:Dbenbenn uploaded better images to commons, in PNG format instead of GIF. Unfortunately some browsers (such as most Internet Explorer versions) ignore transparency in PNG images, which is why you see the image's white background instead of the board. Sam Hocevar 10:11, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Hmm, I'll split the template into two, one for the old version, and will go on normal as before, and one for the new one. -- Natalinasmpf 16:23, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hahaha, well done! I spent two evenings analysing the game after 11. Bxd6. Serves me right. Sam Hocevar 12:49, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia editing was down for maintenance all day today. This was the soonest I could make move 14. H Padleckas 28 June 2005 04:36 (UTC)

The move that was made on 08:31, 28 June 2005 by numbered User:64.12.117.11 and then reverted, was actually made by me, H Padleckas, making my move (move 15. e4 ...). Although I had logged into Wikipedia to make that move, there were some software problems that day and apparently I got logged off before saving that edit, so numbered User:64.12.117.11 was shown as making my move. Later, I remade the move under my usual User name H Padleckas. None of the other edits by User:64.12.117.11 that I see in his/her last 50 edits were made by me. I practically always log in when making my edits so they will show up under my User name. H Padleckas 28 June 2005 22:24 (UTC)
Sorry I reverted you, but I did look at the anon's contributions and didn't think it was you.-gadfium 29 June 2005 00:55 (UTC)

I am traveling for a few days and will probably not have Internet access, so my next move will be a bit late (I don't want to play right now because I still haven't thought enough about all the variations). You can prepare yourself to either 15. ... d4 or 15. ... g5 (I will not play anything else). d4 seems more natural, but I have seen a few things with g5, so if I really take too much time, feel free to force-move g5, I think it can be very interesting! Sam Hocevar 28 June 2005 21:29 (UTC)

We'll resume when you return and make a move. Have a nice trip. H Padleckas 28 June 2005 21:50 (UTC)
Hi, I am back for good! As you can see, I chose g5. Out of curiosity, did you think about d4 and do you know what you would have answered? Sam Hocevar 30 June 2005 17:24 (UTC)
Yes, I thought about 15. ... d4 and I pretty much decided on a contingent move in that case, but I think it is premature for me to divulge that at this time.
H Padleckas 1 July 2005 07:35 (UTC)
I will now reveal what I would have done in the event of 15. ... d4, as previously requested. I would have responded with 16. Na4 ... . I actually wish I would have done that earlier to avoid the black bishop pin created later. By the time I actually moved Na4, I then lost my rook in exchange for the black bishop, considered a loss of about 2 material points for me. However, I continue to struggle on without giving up yet. H Padleckas 6 July 2005 17:41 (UTC)
I think figured that out when you played Na4 immediately after Bd4, without trying to seek compensations (through Qd2 or Qe1) for the exchange. I'm happy I tried g5 then, because d4 would have led to Na4 Nb2 Nc4 and I would have been unable to do anything interesting. I really messed the opening, I think the origin of my uneasy position is 4. ... c5. Oh well, we'll have plenty of time to analyse that when it's over, if you are interested. Sam Hocevar 6 July 2005 20:44 (UTC)
I somewhat regret moving 18. Na4 ... instead of moving 18. Qd2 ... immediately (to protect the N), which I was effectively made to play on the next move after the response 18. ... Bg4 . I anticipated the response would be to grab the R next by 18. ... Bxa1 , allowing me to recapture the B by 19. Qxa1 ... allowing my Q to control the long diagonal and put an extra attacker (along with the B on g3) on the P on e5, which was singly protected at the time. Anyway, that plan was half-baked and foiled. If I had moved 18. Qd2 ... instead to protect the relatively-"pinned" N on c3, with best play by black, the (R minus B) loss of material may not have been prevented anyway, because black could have put another attacker on the N by 18. ... Nxd5 taking a P and doubly attacking the N. However, at that point I could have taken the black N with my N by 19. Nxd5 ... . If black responded by recapturing the N on d5, I could have saved my R by moving it. If black responded by taking my R by 19. ... Bxa1 , I could have moved my yet uncaptured N by 20. Ne7+ ... forcing black to save his K on the next move (20), probably by taking my N on e7. I could have recaptured the black B on the next move by 21. Rxa1 ... , and the net result would have been that I would have been down a (R minus B) in material anyway. But if this were the case, the question is "What move would black have made for move 20 ?", Sam. Care to answer that? H Padleckas 6 July 2005 23:22 (UTC)
Well, after 18. Qd2 Nxd5 19. Nxd5 Bxa1 20. Ne7+ I'd have played Qxe7, since Rxe7 loses the queen through 21. Bh7+, if that was your question.
As for keeping the long diagonal, you could have done it by playing 19. Qe1 instead of 19. Qd2. In fact it was the only reason why I played Bg4: Qe1 seems a bit unnatural because it blocks the f rook, so I thought there were good odds that you'd rather play Qd2. Maybe if you hadn't played that I would not have exchanged my bishop for your rook. I don't know. Sam Hocevar 6 July 2005 23:43 (UTC)

I tried to make move 17 previously, but the Wikipedia database was locked, so I am just now making this move. H Padleckas 2 July 2005 15:51 (UTC)

Ouch, very well done again (24. Ne4)! I thought I could exchange my knight for one of your bishops, thus getting rid of the strong bishop pair, but you seem to always find ways to ruin my plans. Since five or so moves, and despite my being a little exchange ahead, I don't feel very comfortable. You are definitely following through with you promises. :-) Sam Hocevar 5 July 2005 15:44 (UTC)

I'm sorry I messed up the display previously. I tried to fix it, but got a MySQL error, and I was totally unable to edit anything for a while. Then you fixed it. Thanks! Sam Hocevar 5 July 2005 18:31 (UTC)

A juicy rook I can't take right now.  :-P H Padleckas 16:37, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

Really boils down to position versus material right now; will it be the superior position of having a passpawn, or the superiority of a rook to a bishop? -- Natalinasmpf 16:50, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

Natalinasmpf, you seem to be watching this game quite closely. If one considers rooks superior -- we may be playing next... H Padleckas 16:59, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
Hey, I have a passed pawn, too! And since a king+rook versus king+bishop game is usually a draw, if one of us wants to win, it's before all the pawns are exchanged. Sam Hocevar 19:47, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
Maybe I can grab black's passed pawn now? -- or can I ?? I will have to consider this carefully. H Padleckas 21:00, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
For a complicated series of reasons, I decided not to take the e-pawn at this time. H Padleckas 05:39, 13 July 2005 (UTC)
Well done again! 45. Rxe5 Rde6 and you were dead. Sam Hocevar 07:11, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

Nice maneuvering to get one of my last pawns. I got up in the middle of the night to make my previous move because I had trouble sleeping (in the USA). If I hadn't make the move I made, I would have lost my bishop. I see you responded quite quickly. Unfortunately, I went back to sleep. H Padleckas 17:57, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks. You helped me a bit with 56. Rg4, though. I think 56. Rd5 would have been a better move, preventing my rooks from taking your king to the edge. As for the sleep, please rest, you've given me plenty of time when I needed it, and we are not in a hurry. Sam Hocevar 22:52, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

Well, I'm afraid that was a trap into which you fell at last (72. Kh2 would have prevented that, but I'm not sure it was really better). Sam Hocevar 08:10, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

Congratulations, Sam. You played a flawless game, as far as I can tell. H Padleckas 12:41, 2 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for that awesome game. I am indeed quite happy with my play (except the opening, where you had a clearly better position IMHO; I have never been a good opening player, but I try to improve on that). To be fair, your play was really excellent, too, and I think you were really close to drawing at some times. I’m afraid I must leave for Wikimania, so I might not be very available for a few days, but I will try to gather my paper notes and write my part of the analysis. If you kept notes at various times of the game I’d be interested to know about a few of your decisions. But later! See you! Sam Hocevar 18:13, 2 August 2005 (UTC)
