  • I'll move first unless you want to. SDSUPinoy
This is Linuxbeak reporting from WikiNews Chopper Four! The main artery seems clear over Interstate E, and there is some light traffic along Route D approaching the city of Black. We will keep you posted as the hour continues. Now, here's the local weather. Linuxbeak | Desk 02:39, May 17, 2005 (UTC)

The excitement. Hedley 21:16, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

If I'm not mistaken, Black is in violation of the 24-hour rule; perhaps someone should leave a note on his talk page? :-/ Linuxbeak | Desk 21:21, May 17, 2005 (UTC)
Perhaps we should let a player who didn't sign up, but wish to play anyway take Acela Express place (since the game hasn't started yet). Sjakkalle and gadfium come to mind. Gkhan 20:21, May 18, 2005 (UTC)
I haven't played a game of chess in 30 years. The mental gears are rusty, although they have turned over reluctantly while watching and commenting on some of these games. Still, I decline the offer in advance.-gadfium 20:50, 18 May 2005 (UTC)
Oh pooh. Leave it to the whipper-snappers, then. Sjakkalle didn't seem to lack in enthusiasm. JRM · Talk 20:57, 2005 May 18 (UTC)

User:Acela Express has been disqualified. Raul654 shall take his place. Linuxbeak | Desk 23:30, May 18, 2005 (UTC)

Since I am a latecomer, I'll let SDSUPinoy go first. →Raul654 23:34, May 18, 2005 (UTC)

Raul654 to enter! Now that's a pleasant surprise. I'll be interested to see how this game goes. JRM · Talk 23:54, 2005 May 18 (UTC)
Well, well, well. We got us a celebrity! But, however, I feel it is my duty to point out that it's a bit unfair to Sjakkalle, since he's been around here for a while, and giving the games correct numbers and such. Well, it's not a big deal, he can enter the next tournament. Gkhan 00:25, May 19, 2005 (UTC)

...still waiting on SDSUPinoy to make his first move →Raul654 18:21, May 19, 2005 (UTC)

I'll take over if you need someone... Evercat 19:58, 19 May 2005 (UTC)
Dont see why my first first move was reverted? SDSUPinoy
Linuxbeak did it because your opponent changed after you made it. →Raul654 02:21, May 20, 2005 (UTC)

I fear this game will end in bloodshed and tears. JRM · Talk 19:49, 2005 May 25 (UTC)

Well done, Raul, jguk 21:03, 26 May 2005 (UTC)
Why thank you, although congratulations are a bit premature. →Raul654 21:17, May 26, 2005 (UTC)
Well, they certainly aren't anymore... JRM · Talk 23:51, 2005 May 26 (UTC)
Indeed. Well played Raul. Sholtar 14:16, May 27, 2005 (UTC)

29.Ra8+ was the step White couldn't afford to take. Nice blocking with the pawns Raul. --jacobolus (t) 07:13, 27 May 2005 (UTC)

34. Kg1 would also have been better I believe. White would have lost the bishop but would have kept a stronger position. It's guaranteed to be over soon now. Sholtar 01:18, May 28, 2005 (UTC)

Not really. 34... Nxe2+ 35. Kf1 Bxg4! 36. f3 Nxc1 37. fxg4 Rxd2 and White has to do everything to prevent the b-pawn from promoting (38. Ra5 Rb2); the game is still lost. JRM · Talk 11:07, 2005 May 30 (UTC)

It's now been almost 30 hours since I made my move and 36 since SDSUPinoy made his last move. Not to rush him, but if he means to play this out (because it could very well go another dozen moves or more), a little more expediency would be greatly appreciated. →Raul654 22:25, May 30, 2005 (UTC)

I left a stern warning on his user-page :P gkhan 22:49, May 30, 2005 (UTC)

Sorry Memorial Day weekend here in the states, lots going on. SDSUPinoy

I don't want to be nasty, but shouldn't White resign now? The position is quite hopeless, jguk 22:15, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
As the saying goes, nobody ever won a game by resigning. Of course White isn't going to win this one in any case... But Black might make a mistake and stalemate. It's not nice of White to force Black to be careful that way, but then, chess isn't about being nice. Also, it gives Raul an opportunity to demonstrate his knowledge of the endgame. Shortest mate combination wins points, you know. :-) JRM · Talk 23:53, 2005 Jun 1 (UTC)

It's not like I have a game waiting for me. We play the participants of game 2 when they are done. Besides, it's not only knowledge of openings and middle games but endgames are essential too. SDSUPinoy 21:26, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
You can only move your rook along the d-file unless you want to be checkmated immediately. It's only a matter of time before black queens his h-pawn (assuming he is unadventurous and waits for the easy, but long, win), jguk 22:06, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Yes, but we're obviously talking Raul here. At this point, you don't really stand to learn anything from playing this lost game to completion. It's not like you have a whole range of moves available to you. If you had any sense of style, you would have tried 51. Rf5+ and be graciously mated after Black ignored the trap. :-) The objects of the game are either a) winning or b) playing a beautiful game, depending on who you ask. I think the chance of achieving either are pretty much gone for White. JRM · Talk 23:38, 2005 Jun 3 (UTC)
I must say, I was expecting a trap whereby white was offering his rook up, probably whilst checking the black king, but it never happened - not that I expected Raul to fall for something which is so obvious to all that only one white piece can move. It's time for white to give up the ghost, jguk 23:42, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Resigning not because of Pressure from the Community, because he evaded my trap to draw and without that rook all it's gonna take is him taking my pawn, and promoting his pawns.
You could say that you were 'pwned'. Ok, bad joke. Shoot me :D Hedley 14:27, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)
HEY! I already used that joke here. Linuxbeak | Talk | Desk 00:06, Jun 6, 2005 (UTC)

Please don't make assumptions that I should know who Raul is. I know nothing about him and comments assuming that I should know anything about him only create an Ass-U-Me or put another way an Ass out of U and Me.

I think you misinterpreted those comments—replace "Raul" with "Black" in all of the above discussions and they still mean the same thing. JRM · Talk 20:11, 2005 Jun 4 (UTC)
I think there's been some misinterpretation. I wasn't pro-Raul - and I only called for resignation once white's position was lost, jguk 20:51, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Incidentally, I didn't know anything about Raul either—at least not Raul as a chess player. JRM · Talk 22:19, 2005 Jun 4 (UTC)

Let us quote from above: "Yes, but we're obviously talking Raul here." quoted above by Talk 23:38, 2005 Jun 3 (UTC) "not that I expected Raul to fall for something which is so obvious to all that only one white piece can move." quoted above by jguk 23:42, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Those two quotes gave me the impression that you two had some insight into Raul that I did not. Q.E.D.

Sorry. "Besides, it's not only knowledge of openings and middle games but endgames are essential too." My badly-worded response was intended to mean "yes, but we're obviously only talking a chance for Black to demonstrate his knowledge of endgames here, as this game isn't just lost for White but there's no chance of learning from an interesting endgame anymore either". Raul's Raulness doesn't come into it. All clear now? :-) JRM · Talk 16:55, 2005 Jun 6 (UTC)
