adding a reference to a new external link at http://www.andrewwhitehead.net/alexander-baron.html

There is a filter which detects users repeatedly adding links to various articles in order to limit them to a certain rate. This is true even of unquestionably legitimate edits. There is also a filter which tracks whenever a user inserts a link containing their username; however this filter will only tag the edits, not stop you from making them. Description
Hello, I am just sorting out the age question by submitting proof af her actual age. I have worked with Alexis in the past and have produced and directed a movie with her. The ID's were obtained on the date of working with Alexis. All I wanted to do is show correct age and now users are sabotaging my work. Very unnesesary!

You cannot use external links to display images hosted at places like Photobucket, as you were trying to do. Instead, assuming you have the appropriate rights to do so, upload it here or to Commons and then link to it. Thanks! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 20:27, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree this was a good edit on the part of Meretricious. Shouldn't have been filtered, he didn't actually remove a very large amount of actual content. Sadads (talk) 20:23, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It wasn't blocked, it was merely tagged for further review. Unfortunately, most tags are always going to have a few false positives. Please don't feel like you're being labeled a vandal of any sort, these tags are just used to help patrollers identify unusual activity (which, in your case, was the fact that you removed over 7000 characters from that article). Any patroller that sees this tag would investigate the edit, realize there's nothing wrong with it, and move on. Sorry you got hit by this, but there's really no way for the filter to detect what is a legitimate edit and what isn't when deleting large amounts of content, and that's why this filter is a "tag only" filter and not a "disallow" filter. Thanks for the report, Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 20:30, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Technically it was warn and tag (one doesnt imply the other) ... I agree though that this filter definitely should stay on and that there is no realistic way to improve it such that it won't at least occasionally produce false positives like this. The software isnt capable of making intelligent judgments like that, or of noticing whether a particular edit is a large deletion from one section or several small deletions/insertions from many sections which all add up to a single large deletion. If it were possible to make such a distinction, we would do something like that in order to prevent people becoming unduly annoyed. Soap 20:50, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reporting this. The trigger that set off the filter was the "your mother" line about halfway; this is one of the false positives that I knew was going to happen when we set up this filter but it also stops so much vandalism that I dont think disabling the filter will be possible right now. Since pretty much every occurrence of "your mom" except quotes can be replaced by a paraphrase, I will change the page to read "maternal grandmother" (another alternative would simply be "mother's mother" without the possessive your). The capitalized ASS in GRASS is what set off the filter; while this is technically a false positive, the style guidelines discourage writing anything in capitals anywhere, not just "rude words", except for acronyms. So you should create this page with those words in lowercase. Additionally the title at the top is not necessary since the MediaWiki software gives each article a title anyway. Lastly, please be aware that any article that doesnt stand up to the guidlines of verifiability and notability will be deleted, regardless of any style concerns. I believe that this article would in fact qualify for deletion for that reason. Soap 14:01, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry you got hit by this, and thanks for the report. Normally "fucked" wouldn't trip the filter, you're right. Amusingly, the phrase "album fucked" contains the phrase "bum fucked" which we consider to be always bad, and that's what it was finding. I have added a "word boundary" condition to the "bum" part of that so that "album" no longer matches. You should be able to make your edit now. I do advise that you try to cite your source for this comment, though. Thanks for your contributions! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 15:02, 2 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Manual of Style does not allow linking to external sites in the header of a page, or for that matter, anywhere on the page if it's about somebody else. If you want to create an article about yourself, feel free to do so but only if you are sure that you meet the standards for notability for politicians, and that you can prove that by adding clearly reliable third party sources to establish that. Using your website would not be sufficient because it isn't a third party source. If you are not sure that you can meet these inclusion standards then I wouldnt recommend trying to create the article; we have lots of active contributors seeking to fill gaps in our coverage of politicians. Well, the edit filter can't (at present) tell the difference between "crap" and "crap?", and it would be possible to make the distinction, but I'd rather leave the decision of whether to do so to someone else, particularly those who've been working on this particular filter. Soap 22:21, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Suggesting that the filter override cussing with the string "?." ? Vandals typically do not use ? after cussing. Tommy2010 07:26, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also surprised this happened to an autoconfirmed user. These edit filters shouldn't affect autoconfirmed users. They way I see it, if they do, then it will be very easy to see via the contribs and a block would be easy to do. Tommy2010 07:30, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the filter was tripped because of what you wrote towards the end with all the exclamation points. As for the rest of the edit, it is good to add helpful information, but only if you can show that it is true by citing it to a reliable source such as those six that already exist in the article. Unreferenced content, even if not vandalism, is subject to being removed by other editors. Soap 11:01, 4 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I was wrong on a user talk page

Hi there. This filter is designed to protect the talk pages of other editors. Generally if you want to take back something you said, you should "strike it out" by putting <s> and </s> around it to make text like this, and then add text about why you're taking it back. This ensures that if anyone read it before, they understand that you take back what you said and corrected it. Happy editing! Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 04:39, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The filter sees this as vandalism because of the way the MediaWiki software operates. When you modify a paragraph, or sometimes even move a paragraph, the software sees the entire paragraph as being part of the addition, so if that paragraph contains a stopword it will be considered to have been added by you. This is true for all editors, whether they be IP's, regular accounts, or administrators. The filter strictly speaking is supposed to trigger only when someone is replacing a page with obscenities, but has been coded in such a way that small expansions such as this will also trigger it, since sometimes a vandal will repeat a phrase many times. I apologize for the disruption ... note that normal day to day editing of that page will not generally trigger that filter. Did you get what you needed done, or do you want the page to be edited still ? Soap 00:21, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Most of it is now done, but not all. I tried doing each little bit individually (which artificially hikes my edit count and the page history now looks like I don't know what the "preview" button is for), and got most done, but it still won't let me add a {{subst:unsignedIP2|20:27, 14 January 2010|82.152.215.223}}; if you check the filter log above you'll see there are now two more entries. Any chance that you could add that template please? --Redrose64 (talk) 02:57, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The name of the company FAG was being mistaken for vandalism by the edit filter. I've removed that for now and will restore it later on a more watchworthy filter. Do you have the text of the article saved? I would not want to create the article myself because then all edit notices regarding the article would go to me instead of you and because it's generally discouraged to take attribution for other people's work in general. Repeatedly adding links to a single website is discouraged, and even when the links are legitimate there is a limit on how many such additions you can make per hour. I dont see any "disallow" entries in your filter log, so my guess is you did not hit that limit, but if you're just wondering why you're being tagged at all, this is the reason why, and unfortunately it's not yet possible to sort out legitimate hits from spamming. • Hello... the filter was triggered by the similarity between your user name and the URL you were adding. I've had to block the account, because of this connection and because of Wikipedia's rules against such accounts. However, you are certainly welcome to open a new account for your personal use. As for the link, it was removed as part of our external links guideline. (FYI, as someone connected to the site, you have a conflict of interest with regard to the link in question.) Please feel free to ask if you have any further questions.) Cheers. --Ckatzchatspy 05:54, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I understand you have good intents, but in re-writing the article, you also removed all of the references which help verify the information, and all of the categories which help people find the article (including that category which says that you're alive). I would not recommend such a massive re-organization of the text even aside from the removals of references and categories. If you avoid doing those things, the filter that catches adding a link with your username should not stop you from making the edit (though it will still tag). Soap 14:00, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Vandals often add the phrase "your mom" to articles, and "Your Mom's Basement" will match that. I added an exception for now, and hopefully it will get solved with a more intelligent solution in the future. You should be able to create the article now. Soap 10:47, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is discouraged for a user to remove a discussion from another user's talk page, even if it's one that you've moved elsewhere. Im sure Kintetsu understands, but it's probably better to let him remove the conversation. Soap 13:35, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It was your edit summary that set off the filter, not anything in the edit itself. Using capitals for things that aren't acronyms is generally considered over-reacting because edit summaries stay in the page forever and can't be undone. I would recommend try to appear calm at all times and refrain from using all-caps in edit summaries. Soap 18:59, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Comments

You can lay off the patronizing attitude. Caps are used for emphasis in places where italics and bold are not available. Having to repeatedly remove factually incorrect information posted by a single editor requires emphasis. 75.2.209.226 (talk) 14:42, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm giving you general purpose advice based on what I've seen happen before; this is not something I've made up, and not something I could change if I wanted. If you want to know the specific stopword that set off the filter, it was HITLER. Not every capitalized word is going to set off the edit filter like this, but the practice of avoiding all-caps in edit summaries, even for emphasis, is something that I feel is a good idea to follow even apart of the issue of setting off the edit filter. [[Submission_management]] (filter log) (redo)
Description
This page only addressed one aspect of submission management i.e. related to pharmaceutical regulatory submissions. However, I feel that there is much more to submission management that just this. After my edit, this page will give a more holistic view of submission management including that in the context of pharmaceuticals. I have not 'removed' all the sections of the previous revision, rather I have shifted the content of the previous revision to sub-sections in the current revision with some irrelevant and redundant content removed for the moment. I plan to re-phrase that content and bring them back into this article in future revisions. You can probably add a new clause in your automated filter that checks whether or not all the content in major sections of a previous revision was moved to sub-sections in the new proposed revision. If yes, then a warning may not be shown to the editor of a page.

I can't tell, off the top of my head, why the "removing categories" filter was triggered; perhaps it actually considered 'orphaned articles' to be a category or perhaps it's just a bug. As for the content you added, to me it looks like you've added a lot of unreferenced content, and marked those paragraphs out with 'fact' tags'. That is really not what the purpose of fact tags is. If you know something to be true but can't prove it, you should not add it at all, except at best on the talk page of the article where you can ask someone who might have access to better sources to verify the information. The filter was set off by the series of exclamation points in the article. However, even apart from that, an article like this would likely be deleted, so I would not recommend creating it until you can be sure that it meets our standards for creation, particularly WP:V and WP:N. Fixed; I suggest the best solution would be to find whatever phrase it was that originally caused that to be added, and use a more complete version of that phrase so that this false positive won't come up again. Soap 21:58, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have over the months added considerable information on many different wikipedia pages about coffee maker brands, varieties, current machines available, coffee pods. Also editing out discontinued machines, and fixing spelling errors. However when I leave an external link to one of my coffee maker consumer reviews sites, they are normally taken off a month or two later. Why is this? I never simply add a link to page that I haven't edited considerably. Please advise???

I have looked at all of your edits. You have repeatedly added links to pages at http://www.singlecupcoffee411.com and http://www.coffeemakers411.com, which are totally promotional in character. Every one of these pages is determined to tell us how wonderful a particular product is. (For example, [3], [4], [5], etc.) Your user name also suggests a possible conflict of interest in linking to this site, as does your saying "when I leave an external link to one of my coffee maker consumer reviews sites" (my emphasis). You have also linked to http://www.coffee.org/, which is a page existing for the purpose of selling products. Also, although it is off the subject of link addition, this edit is full of promotional language, and not remotely suitable for an encyclopedia article. Have you read the guideline on external links to avoid? If you have you will be aware that such links are not acceptable. Points 4, 5 and 14 are all likely to be relevant to this case. I also suggest reading the policy on using Wikipedia as a means of promotion and the guideline on conflict of interest. JamesBWatson (talk) 21:53, 8 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
