Volodymyr Ariev (born 31 March 1975) is a Ukrainian journalist, film director, author of the project "Restricted Area". He also is the Member of Parliament of Ukraine since the 2007 Ukrainian parliamentary election, chairman of Ukrainian delegation in Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in 2015–2019, PACE Vice-President (2015, 2018), President of PACE Committee for Culture, Education, Science and Media (2016–2017). He has a diplomatic rank of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador.

Volodymyr Ariev was born in Kyiv Ukraine on 31 March 1975.[1][2]

Investigations

Friendship with GRU agent Pablo González

On 15 October 2024, Shaun Walker, a correspondent for The Guardian, released an investigation into an agent of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Russian journalist Pavel Rubtsov, better known as Pablo González.[8] The investigation states that Pablo González was friends with Volodymyr Ariev, in particular, during his trips to Ukraine, Gongales visited Ariev and gave him a bottle of wine of Basque origin.[8]

The assistant's ties to Myrotvorets

An assistant to MP Volodymyr Ariev is Oleksiy Pogorilov, who, according to the Mezha.net media agency, has ties to the Myrotvorets website.[9] Pogorilov himself calls Ariev his close friend.[9]

Scandals

The story of the 'Russian saboteur' in Kyiv

On 27 February 2022, during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ariev's assistant Oleksiy Pogorilov told the story of a "Russian saboteur" in Kyiv.[10] According to him, Ariev was travelling through the capital and stopped next to a man who was making noise.[10] He asked him to take him to the "Maidanchik", probably to Maidan Nezalezhnosti, and then Ariev asked for his documents. After the conversation, the MP handed the saboteur over to law enforcement.[10] This story was also spread by MP Iryna Herashchenko.[10]

In October 2024, the editorial board of Mezha.net sent a request to the National Police of Ukraine to find out about the fate of the saboteur.[10]

Illegal drug trade by an assistant

On 23 October 2024, the editorial board of Mezha.net sent an information request to MP Volodymyr Ariev regarding the distribution of drugs by his assistant.[11] While preparing a new investigation, journalists received information about Oleksiy Pogorilov, an aide to MP Ariev.[11] According to insiders, Pogorelov was involved in the Illegal drug trade, after which Mezha.net sent a request for public information to the MP.[11]

Ariev is married to Natalka Fitsych (b. 1977), editor-in-chief of the production company "Restricted Area". They have a daughter Yaryna (b. 2000).[3]
