Victory or Death: "Victory" was the sign and "Or Death" countersign for American troops at Valley Forge during the American Revolution. It was used when the American forces sallied from Valley Forge to attack the Hessian forces at Trenton. General George Washington had decided to gamble his entire force in one last major push. He had decided to either win a dramatic victory over the Hessian/British forces that would rally the colonists against the British, or to lose his army in an effort to shame the American colonials into rallying to the cause.
