Vampire Academy is the first book in a series of vampire-based fantasy/romance novels by the American bestselling author Richelle Mead. It chronichles the life of 17 year old Rosemarie Hathaway, commonly known as Rose, after she finds that her best friend Vasilissa Dragomir's life may be in danger. Vampire Academy introduces a new and different world of distinguished social classes. There are the dhampirs, the Moroi, Strigoi, and humans. Dhampirs usually become Guardians to protect Moroi. Moroi are Royal vampire families who are threatened by the Strigoi(the undead). As Rose juggles school, her life, and her growing attraction with her mentor Dimitri Belikov, she begins to unravel the mystery of her past, in ways that no one could have ever believed. |

Rosemarie "Rose" Hathaway and her best friend Princess Vasilissa Dragomir had escaped from St. Vladimir's academy and had been on the run for almost two years. After a run in with the new school guardian Dimitri Belikov they are finally captured and sent back to St. Vladimirs. Within the minutes, Dimitri notices that Rose and Lissa share a bond, a rare connection that only the best Guardins possess with their Moroi. It allows Rose to sense Lissa wherever she is and sometimes go inside her mind. Rose, having been absent for so long, must attend school once more and take extra classes with Dimitri or be expelled for St.Vladimir's. |
Lissa has a special kind of Spirit magic within her. She is able to heal even the worst wounds and can use the art of compulsion (she can make people do things for her) However, using her abilities make her drained and cause her pain. During the time at St. Vladimirs, Rose is reunited with her old friend, Mason. She is happy with her fellow novices. Lissa begins to have a relationship with another Moroi, Christian Ozera. Meanwhile, Rose begins to fall in love with Dimitri but is unsure as to whether or not he feels the same way. One night, Rose is hooking up with Jesse Zeklos, a Moroi. He comes upon the realization that Rose was "feeding" Lissa with blood while they were gone. This would give her the title of a "blood whore." Rose denies it and continues to make out with Jesse when Dimitri walks in on them. He scolds Rose for being irresponsible. Then, dead animals start appearing in Lissa's room. Lissa freaks out and gets scared. She even goes to the extent of cutting herself. Rose tries to keep her secret as long as possible. |
Days later, Rose realizes that Jesse has been spreading a rumor that Rose had sex with him and that she let him drink her blood; a disgusting thing to do, farther implying that she was, indeed a "blood whore." These rumours were later found to have been spread by Mia, another girl who hates Rose and Lissa. She had told Jesse to spread the rumor. Rose cries that night and Lissa vows to make them pay. As Lissa begins to climb her way through the social ladder to take her revenge on Mia. The hate Mia had for Lissa was later found to have occured because Lissa's dead brother Andre had used Mia, when Mia was a freshman. As this occurs, Lissa’s uncle Victor Dashkov, attempts to kidnap Lissa. He plans to completely burn out her lifeforce in order to heal himself of a fatal disease. He is set to become the next king and his illness prevented this thereby not allowing him to change Moroi society for the better. He realizes that Rose's ability to sense Lissa can hurt his plans and realizes the mutual attraction between Rose and Dimitri. He puts Dimitri and Rose in a lust spell that temporarily preoccupies them by drastically enhancing their already strong emotions for each other. Dimitri is able to pull out of this after a time and Rose realizes that Lissa is in danger. She manages to save her with the help of Dimitri and the other school guardians. |
