Could I get your perspective please.

Hi Riley, not sure if you remember me, but we've chatted a couple of times before. I'm reaching out to you to ask for your participation in a recent DRV I've submitted for Margo Rey article here. Please note, I am not asking that you back my position! I am simply seeking a truly unbiased opinion here and I've always known you to be fair. Thanks. Vandalism Studies Update - August 2012

Hello, members of the Vandalism Studies Project! As some of us are quite new with the Vandalism Studies project, it would make sense for us to re-read some of the past studies, as well as studies outside the project. Please do so if you have a chance, just so we can get into the groove of things. We're planning on attempting to salvage the Obama study (or possibly simply convert it to a new Romney study), as well as hopefully begin our third study this November. If you have any ideas for Study 3, please suggest them! If you have any questions please post them on the project talk page. Thanks, and happy editing - we can't wait to begin working on the project! --Dan653 (talk) and Theopolisme :)

User:Keelan717

I think I need a second opinion from someone who also knows what's going on here. The user appears to not understand the experiential expectations for adminship or bureaucrat nominations. I don't really have a problem with them nominating themselves and finding that out for themselves. However, I've noticed the editor editing under an IP too (e.g. responding to your question here. Again, it's a new user, so I'm not necessarily concerned, because they might've forgotten to sign in. What bothers me is that they are clearly trying to use two accounts per this edit to support his own nomination when the user already expressed support under their own username. This kind of behavior is never OK, even if these RfA/RfB/whatever aren't going anywhere. I'm thinking a warning on their talk page is needed right now, and should this kind of socking continue, I think this needs to go to AN/I. What are your thoughts? I, Jethrobot drop me a line (note: not a bot!) 12:40, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

I agree with you, when he joined IRC to ask for help, he had the same IP addresses as the ons that were used to vote for him. Feel free to drop a warning and head thataway if you feel it is necessary. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 15:11, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Keelan RfB

Are you serious about encouraging Keelan (1 edit to mainspace) to run for crathip? I think this is extremely misplaced, and if it's a joke, it's in very bad taste. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 13:36, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

I was not encouraging the user, he joined IRC asking how to make it so others could vote and how to create a RfB but left before I could tell him how to do the things. Since he already figured out how to make the page, I just informed him on what he asked to know. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 15:08, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
With all due respect Riley, that should have immediately raised the concern that anyone who doesn't know how to apply shouldn't be applying, and to rapidly provide them with some appropriate advice. A quick look at his contribs would also have shown that he only had 1 edit to mainspace. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 15:23, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Kudpung, you are assuming a lot of things. I was aware of the user's edit count and warned the user about it saying they were unlikely to pass, the user said he wanted to try anyways. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 15:32, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
My apologies - I couldn't actually see where you had given him that advice - must have missed it. But you are right, I often assume a lot and that's perhaps why I catch so many socks ;) Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 17:55, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
FWIW, he and his socks have been blocked. All his edits were vandalism including the fake RfA he started without permission for another user. You may wish to keep an eye on his IP in case he starts again - we can't keep IPs blocked forever. It may be a former permabanned user who has come back with a vengeance. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 07:46, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

PERM

I think you may be archiving some requests too soon. I would have liked Courselles to have responded to an on-going discussion. I also think it's important to give it a couple of days for applicants to return to the board and see the responses - not everyone like you and I, is online 24/7 ;) Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 06:40, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Which on-going discussion is that? I am currently archiving requests that have been decided at a minimum of two days (server time) ago? Were only online 24/7? Feels like longer. :D I apologize for any inconvenience, sorry. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 06:43, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Riley, I'll handle archiving Rollback requests, and you'll handle everything else, if it's fine with you. Armbrust's block expires on September 14th. Let's wait until the page has been cluttered to archive. PERM isn't that urgent. Best, Electric Catfish 11:20, 3 September 2012 (UTC).
Electriccatfish2, there really isn't a need for two of us archiving. Even if there was a backlog, two people archiving at the same time would be an accident waiting to happen. With that said, I am going to continue doing what I was doing. Anyways, why are you commenting on my talk page? This discussion is already on-going on your talk page. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley (public) talk 18:55, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for all of your anti-vandalism work! Electric Catfish 15:53, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

You were absolutely right

The revert you made on Qin Shi Huang was correct, you were very intuitive! It was vandalism, feel free to warn that person. And thank you for being diligent, that page gets a high level of vandalism so it's a good idea to keep an eye on it. Apart from the regular contributors, the random ones maybe vandals. -- RexRowan  Talk  06:34, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, I was a little confused with that one hahah. The user has been warned. Keep of all the great work with articles like Night in paintings (Eastern art) and Chinese fine art! -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk
You are the first person welcomed me! You are very observant! Thank you very much for the praise, the articles were not my work alone, User:CaroleHenson helped me out a great deal both on editing and finding sources. I am slowly improving, which is a good sign. I still have so much to discover and learn!

By the way, I am thinking about writing some templates that will stimulate the understanding between neurotypical and autistic editors. This idea came from my personal experience of using smiley faces, they help me add correct tone to my words otherwise I find difficult and sometimes misunderstood.

Would you like to help out on drafting a project idea here? [2] -- RexRowan  Talk  15:56, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Sure, the idea sounds really good. I cannot guarantee that others would like the idea though. I'm sure many others have trouble with communicating and having the wrong tone when meaning to have a good one. :) -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 14:28, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Rollback at CVUA

Hi Riley. Since the discussion there was closed, I thought I'd reply to you here. The big problem with expecting editors to have rollback rights before becoming an instructor is that it excludes a number of good instructors. Anyone who doesn't want to use rollback, or has had it taken away for any reason in the past therefore cannot be an instructor. Rollback doesn't (or shouldn't) give any additional status, it's not required to revert vandalism and if you start using it as a requirement. I personally don't want rollback and if there was a way of getting rid of it as an admin, I would - I find the button more annoying than anything else. WormTT(talk) 07:53, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

I hear exactly what your saying and I agree with it. There are tons of great people out there [who don't have rollback] that would be great instructors. I guess the best we can do to get good instructors is to invite the right people. I will comment on this further after work. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 15:31, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Doctors (soap opera)

Hi, Thanks for your help in reference to my AWB request. Having had a check, unfortunately, it seems that not all of the links have been changed. I am assuming this is because a lot of pages don't refer directly to its old name, Doctors (2000 TV series), and use something like Doctors. Would you be able to do another run for this specific term, which should clear a lot? I will then have to look again to see what is left. If you don't have time, no problems - I only need a few more edits before I can get AWB myself. Thanks for your help, which is much appreciated. Adamiow (talk) 18:18, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue Six

Hi! Welcome to the sixth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse serves over 700 new editors in six months on Wikipedia! Since February 27, 741 new editors have participated at the Teahouse. The Q&A board and the guest intro pages are more active than ever.
A lovely little teahouse nestled in Germany from Wiki Loves Monuments
  • Automatic invites are doing the trick: 50% more new editors visiting each week. Ever since HostBot's automated invite trial phase began we've seen a boost in new editor participation. Automating a baseline set of invitations also allows Teahouse hosts to focus on serving hot cups of help to guests, instead of spending countless hours inviting.
  • Guests to the Teahouse continue to edit more & interact more with other community members than non-Teahouse guests according to six month metrics. Teahouse guests make more than twice the article edits and edit more talk pages than other new editors.
  • New host process implemented which encourages anyone to get started as a Teahouse host in a few easy steps. Stop by the hosts page and become a Teahouse host today!
  • Host lounge renovations nearing completion. Working closely with Teahouse hosts, we've made some major renovations to the Teahouse Host Lounge - the main hangout and resource space for hosts. Learn more about the improvements here.

Comments on my talk page

Hi Riley. I think it's best to ley me decide where I post things, and if I'm procedurally wrong, I'm sure my admin colleagues wilol tell me, so I'll handle my part of this the way I think best. I have already previously left suitable comments at AIN and what takes place on my tp is to help spare Anderson any more embarrassment and pile-ons at ANI. More than enough has been said on tje ANI, several admins concur, and it could have been closed when I suggested it should. It just remains now to see if the advice will be taken. Thanks. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:11, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

Sure, whatever you feel best! I just mentioned that so I wasn't posting the same message twice again. Have a good day. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 03:32, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
FYI, see Anderson's talk page now - things are getting beyond control. If it continues, because I'm too involved now, I'll have to ask another admin for input and let them block, or impose a topic ban (best) if necessary. There won't be any need to go through the whole rigmarole of another ANI. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 08:03, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
Kudpung, if you want a topic ban (which I agree would be the best outcome, compared with blocking) it needs to be needs to be done by the community (hence, probably AN or ANI). "Individual editors, including administrators, may not directly impose bans" (Wikipedia:Topic ban#Decision to ban). Or have I missed something? Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 08:31, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
There is also the possibility that the user may voluntarily accept a topic ban, perhaps in lieu of a block, or as part of an unblock request. Not all bans have to go through the community. WormTT(talk) 08:55, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Worm, is there somewhere it says that (I'm not meaning to be difficult, it's just so I have a reference to it in the future if needed)? Sorry for clogging up your talk page Riley. Callanecc (talkcontribslogs) 09:12, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
It's an agreement with the unblocking admin and so fits under IAR. Restrictions include topic bans, area bans, requirements for mentorship and so on. I believe the closest we get to actually having it written down as a solution is at Wikipedia:Editing restrictions#Types of restrictions, under probation. WormTT(talk) 09:21, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

Page Curation update

Hey all :). We've just deployed another set of features for Page Curation. They include flyouts from the icons in Special:NewPagesFeed, showing who reviewed an article and when, a listing of this in the "info" flyout, and a general re-jigging of the info flyout - we've also fixed the weird bug with page_titles_having_underscores_instead_of_spaces in messages sent to talkpages, and introduced CSD logging! If you're incredibly worried about getting about it - which I see no reason why you should be, it's just a userright, and pending changes doesn't seem to coming for a while (given the tendency of "the Wikipedian" to argue about anything and everything) - you could just leave a message on an admin's talk asking them to take a look. Or just cross your fingers and hope for the best. ;0 Theopolisme 21:30, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
I'm neither impatient about it nor patiently waiting. I'm just wondering why the one before me was never answered back upon. I was just wondering if that sockpuppet investigation had anything to do with the delay. Yeah, I realize that it takes effect later this year. Just wondering aloud. Haha. Notice and recommendation

Hi, just letting you know that I completed all six of your file renaming requests. All requests were completely valid, and you seem decently experienced in the file namespace. May I recommend that you request file-mover rights, because you know what you're doing and it would take the tedious work off of other file-movers' shoulders, if you moved the files yourself. Cheers, TRLIJC19 (talkcontribs) 21:00, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

I have requested the right. Thank you for moving those files. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 23:52, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

WikiEmperor, we're talking about.

I have a question, since you've been on Wikipedia a really long time. If somebody has complete autocratic rule over a Wikiproject... is there a way to even report that. This person that I'm talking about; yeah he keeps those articles in line, but at what cost. It seems like no one can make any edits that don't meet with his personal approval. I don't see how that can be allowed, but it seems like he's gotten away with it for some time now. Please let me know. Thanks. I'm going to sleep right now on this side of the world (I'm not sure where you're from), so don't expect an immediate response to your response. Thanks, again. Lighthead þ 08:00, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

First, you should politely start a conversation on the user's talk page. If that goes nowhere, ask the whole Wikiproject to comment on it (wikiproject talk page). And if that goes nowhere, it might be best to take it too Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. Could you email me some details? -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 13:59, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, I'll do that. That'd probably be best. Lighthead þ 01:18, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

Is your email like this: Riley_Huntley@hotmail.com, or like this: riley_huntley@hotmail.com? I think maybe the latter, but I could be wrong. Just some advice; if it's the former, you should change hotmail to lowercase to avoid confusion (actually either way). Thanks. Lighthead þ 02:28, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
Email Riley_Huntley@hotmail.com or wikihuntley@hotmail.com (preferred). The simplest way to email me is by going to the top right corner, holding your mouse over "User" and by clicking "Email user". -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 02:40, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

I did some work with Kate Forster but didn't end up finding much in the way of references. After all that I noticed that the author removed your CSD template (!). So feel free to replace the template if you still find it speediable and don't worry about my additions. An article with the same title was deleted 2 years ago as well. It looks as though she might be on the verge of notability if the one source is correct, but probably not yet. Hi Riley Huntley. I'm leaving you this message because you have previously been involved as an adopter with Wikipedia's Adopt-a-user program. A clean-up of this program is currently underway, and as part of the process I am trying to find out who is and isn't still interested in remaining an adopter.

If you would prefer not to be part of the adoption program anymore, you need do nothing; when the overhaul of the project is completed your name will be removed from the list of active adopters. However, if you have current adoptees, an active adoption school or an interest in adopting in the near future, then please let us know by signing here.

If you want to remain in the project and can currently take on more adoptees, there is a serious backlog at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user; it would be enormously helpful if you could take on one or two of the users there. Please do keep an eye on the project for upcoming changes, we could use your opinions and your help! Yunshui  09:17, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Riley, I cannot thank you enough for starting the uw-attempt series of templates. I've always wanted to, but I'm nearly clueless about templates (besides DYK). Hi there. ome serious suggestions for a total overhaul are now being made. In anticipation of the possible implementation of these changes, some things that could immediately help reduce the bureaucracy, would be to reduce the banter and the use of 'clerking' style micro templates. I have proposed one solution that puts the entire CVU 'school' on one single page, placing responsibility for project management squarely at the hands of the 'active' trainers themselves, obviating any forms of secondary discussion. An updated draft is available at here. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:01, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Hey ~riley. This will be, if not our final newsletter, one of the final ones :). After months of churning away at this project, our final version (apart from a few tweaks and bugfixes) is now live. Hi ~riley. I'm leaving you this message because you have previously been involved with Counter-Vandalism, and may still be. The Academy project has been restructured, placing responsibility for it on the trainers themselves and as part of the process I am trying to find out who is still interested in remaining as active trainers.

A tag has been placed on File:IMG 0180.JPG requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Cavendish bananas

Cavendish bananas are in fact eaten raw; they are the most common type of bananas found in American supermarkets, and the most common use for them is to be eaten raw. The previous text made it seem they were only used in dishes when they are most commonly eaten raw by themselves. 76.231.150.69 (talk) 01:39, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Ah, thank you for informing me. :) -- Cheers, Riley Huntley 01:45, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

I would also admonish you to use a little common sense - saying that cavendish bananas are eaten raw is certainly not vandalism by any stretch of the imagination. I think you might be a little too hasty to revert an edit just because it comes from an unregistered user - remember that IPs are human, too and some of us are also experienced users who, from one reason or another, don't bother to log in anymore. Remember that 80% of edits made by IPs are legitimate edits the next time you are tempted to push the undo button just because the person who made the edit is an IP. 76.231.150.69 (talk) 01:54, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

I am quite aware that IPs are human too, I actually enjoy working with IPs on several Wikipedia pages and I was not tempted to push the revert button just because an IP made the edit. I cannot find the Wikipedia page but, I am human too and humans make mistakes! I am sorry for this mistake and happy you brought it to my attention. I have one question though; In the end, why did you decide to remove your words? -- Cheers, Riley Huntley 02:05, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Do you still use EdiPad? You can make a baby macro to get rid of those underscores on the spot. Call it ctrl-_ and make the macro simply replace _ with a space. I know you requested the logo for your wikivessels proposal, but as that proposal is not going anywhere in its current iteration, would you be opposed to my putting forth a variant of said logo as a possibility for use for the travel guide, as it seems it would fit for that? Page Curation newsletter - closing up!

Hey all :).

We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.

However! Closing up shop does not mean not making any improvements. First-off, this is your last chance to give us a poke about unresolved bugs or report new ones on the talkpage. If something's going wrong, we want to know about it :). Second, we'll hopefully be taking another pass over the software next year. Hello, Kudpung. Thank you for the very kind of reminder about using the optional {{NAO}} template, I will remember to use it more often. No need to remind me how delicate ACC is, like others, I deal with it everyday. Your advice is always respected and welcome here. :) -- Cheers, Riley Huntley 02:54, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Graeme Bartlett (talk) 16:05, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

I am aware that I tagged Aziz Ozan Öztürk with {{A1}} premature (page 14 minutes old), but I feel it would useless to remove the templates to add them back 20 minutes later. Apologies for tagging the article so early in the first place. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley 16:18, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Kings Island Facts

You deleted this sub page Kings Island Facts, This page is a subpage for Kings Island to contain lists of facts that do not belong on the main page for GA Staandard reasons. Please undo this.--Nickvet419 (talk) 02:41, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello, I am not a administrator, thus I did not delete the fact page, I only nominated the article for deletion since the usable information was merged and because it was a Redundant fork. The article is only B class so there is no concern about the content meeting GA standards, it can also always be improved to GA standards. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley 02:52, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Rollback of edit on Kings Island.

This information had previously been in the article before and removed for GA standards, discussed in the talk page. --Nickvet419 (talk) 03:20, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Ah, thanks for explaining now. Content should not be sacrificed just because it does not meet GA standards, specially when there is no current review on the article. Yes, lists may not be able to be expanded like the section "Current attractions" but bulleted information can be expanded into paragraphs. I have re-added the "Notable people" section, which I ask you do not remove without a response here. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley 03:30, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
sounds good to me, I found notable people to be noteworthy as it is referenced also in the peoples wiki pages , but also make a note on the talk page for you reasoning. --Nickvet419 (talk) 03:34, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Novel American Tyler Ward Correction

You had edited the Novel American article and bluelinked the name Tyler Ward. I wanted to clarify for you that this is the wrong Tyler Ward. I actually made the same mistake the first time I started following Novel American. The Tyler Ward who played drums for NA is not the Tyler Ward famous for his YouTube cover. NA's Tyler Ward came from Cecil Adora with Van Beasley and is a different person just with the same name. On Twitter, the Tyler Ward that has the Wiki page is @TylerWardMusic and NA's old Tyler Ward is @TylerWardIs. I've also asked Josh Farro to re-verify this and I'll let you know if he gets back to me. Thanks for your time!

Wow, thank you so much for correcting me! -- Cheers, Riley Huntley 14:49, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Your bad faith

Riley, I look forward to your apology. Will you look at User:Don'tletthepigeonfan, deleted by JohnCD as a copyright violation? That's the page I reported as a copyright violation, and you went on to claim that I was a vandal of some sort. You are welcome to look at my other contributions, on TheFilmSchool and on Woking High School, and I'll serve you your crow any way you like. Seriously: you placed a vandal-3 template on my talk page, and I want that gone and replaced with an apology. Thanks! 66.168.247.159 (talk) 21:27, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Actually, I made the edit in good faith (as all my edits are made) by leaving a attempt-2 template on your talk page because of what the filter log showed, which was section blanking. I am not talking about this one but more this and this, same with this. Now for the personal attack template, you have made several personal attacks on vandals, which is not appropriate and encyclopedic. I will not remove any warnings (certainly not the personal attack template) until you explain your edits. As I mentioned, I am making this edit in good faith. :) -- Cheers, Riley Huntley
You made all your edits in good faith--do you have any idea how sanctimonious that sounds? All those edits were correct and you know it. For instance, you point at Red Ribbon Week--my edits were followed by those of Walter Görlitz (talk · contribs), who kindly left me a welcome template, and AlexiusHoratius (talk · contribs), an admin who protected the page after I asked for it at RFPP. In other words, you may have looked at something, but you didn't look far enough, and that's why you won't make admin anytime soon. The only reason you slapped warning templates around is that you don't know how to write content and that you think IP editors aren't worth your time.

I left you this message in good faith, as an opportunity for you to improve yourself. Now, you won't retract the vandalism templates you left on my talk page, and I don't see an apology yet, so I'll just leave you an expletive there in response. Be careful not to use rollback incorrectly when you're following me around. All the best, Riley Huntley. 66.168.247.159 (talk) 21:55, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

I got one for you: {{Uw-harass3}} 66.168.247.159 (talk) 22:13, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
I removed the good faith warning I placed incorrectly, sadly, I had to place a last warning for personal attacks per your contributions ([4] Edit summaries: [5] [6] [7]. Please be the force of good, okay? -- Cheers, Riley Huntley
Pay respect, Mr. Riley Huntley. If you look carefully and corroborate my talk page with my edit history, you'll find that I've been warned by a large number of ... who don't know dick about editing or writing and who think that IP editors should by definition be distrusted. I'm saddened to see that you seem to be one of them. You can get all hoity-toity about "personal insults" or whatever, but maybe you should try editing while not logged in, to see what a large pool of idiots we have here, armed with rollback and Twinkle and templates at the ready. You'll be saying worse than me in no time. Now, I'm going to take your advice and your final warning to heart, fo shizzle, and will leave you with your righteousness. I hope you will draw one or more appropriate lessons from this, for when you do run for admin. Until you do, I won't !vote for you (I will log in for the occasion, of course). 66.168.247.159 (talk) 23:06, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

This is just a tribute.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't. AFT5 newsletter

Hey all :). A couple of quick updates (one small, one large)

First, we're continuing to work on some ways to increase the quality of feedback and make it easier to eliminate and deal with non-useful feedback: hopefully I'll have more news for you on this soon :).

Second, we're looking at ways to increase the actual number of users patrolling and take off some of the workload from you lot. Part of this is increasing the prominence of the feedback page, which we're going to try to do with a link at the top of each article to the relevant page. This should be deployed on Tuesday (touch wood!) and we'll be closely monitoring what happens. Let me know if you have any questions or issues :). afd relistings

It's a little unusual to relist articles three times, especially blps. If there are two deletes plus the nominator & no plausible keeps, that's normally enough discussion. In the past, we used to delete if there was even one + the nominator, but if that's the case, it might make more sense to give an opinion. I will probably close a few on the more obvious ones as delete or in the other direction as no consensus, since there is no rule how long something has to stay after a relisting, though for a first relisting, we usually give another 7 days. DGG ( talk ) 00:29, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

Could you please state the AfD that you were using as an example? :) -- Cheers, Riley Huntley 00:32, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
I see what you are saying from your point of view but without reading the whole discussion and article, just because there are no plausible keeps like this or this at the time, it doesn't mean there is "normally enough discussion." Honestly, in my mind, the only discussion that should be closed with one delete + nominators rationale is for a speedy closure. I clearly understand what you are saying and will definitely keep it in mind! -- Cheers, Riley Huntley 09:03, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

Cost to company

Hi Riley

Concerning your reversal of my edit: I left a note on the discussion page, but failed to refer to it on the edit summary. I propose that CTC be deleted, but it takes me too long to find out about the process, so I was asking that someone with more experience take it up. It makes no sense ro point "CTC" to "employment", where there is not a single mention of it. Therefore, anyone wnating to know what CTC is, will walk away as ignorant as before and annoyed to boot. Regards, Rui ''Gabriel'' Correia (talk) 17:48, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello, thanks for all the work you have done. I agree with you that it shouldn't be redirected, and I thought I stated in my edit summary but I guess not. It is best for it to redirect until you have decided what needs to be done with it though as someone would be even more annoyed to boot if they found a blank article instead of what they are searching for. Apologies for not stating in the edit summary though! -- Cheers, Riley Huntley 01:41, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello, I reverted your edit because there is no reason for a page to be blanked, if content shouldn't be there it should be deleted or certain parts should be removed. If you think the article should be deleted, see WP:AFD or WP:CSD if it meets criteria. Please also read Wikipedia:No personal attacks. I did indeed read the talk page message and was just writing a response at the time you left this message. From what I see, the article needs to be improved but not deleted. NAC's are not suitable for MMA event where the MMA fans !voting keep don't directly address policy. Can you please re-open, or if you disagree please expand your close to include what sources your feel are not routine coverage and are from reliable sources. Thanks Mtking (edits) 03:39, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

From what I have seen with the discussion, consensus is clearly stating keep (fans or not; most have good points). "NAC's are not suitable for MMA event where the MMA fans !voting keep don't directly address policy." First, please read Wikipedia:NAC which does not state anything you just mentioned as what a non-admin should and should not close. Several policies are mentioned like WP:MMANOT, WP:EFFECT, WP:NOT DOES (don't know what that one is) and WP:Crystal Ball. I don't know why you are asking me to go through the article and point out the RS's and which aren't, specially since your/the nomination was not stating that the references were not reliable sources. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley 03:53, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
WP:NOT is a policy, WP:EFFECT is a guideline and WP:MMANOT is an essay, None of the Keeps addressed the issue of failing not newspaper by demonstrating it does pass, as is common with MMA events for example Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/UFC 155 and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/UFC 156. Mtking (edits) 04:14, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
I appreciated the solid judgment on the AfD Riley. MtKing is on some sort of bizarre witch hunt to delete as many MMA related articles as possible with his cookie cutter AfD template and reasoning which has been overruled many times already. Thanks for doing what was right. Hopefully this guy will find something else to do with the several hours per day he wastes on it soon enough.I remember halloween (talk) 16:01, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Riley. Can you please revert your closure of this AfD and let an admin to do perform the closure. Nomination itself is a delete vote and so there exist one delete vote with no support whatsoever for keeping the article. Usually, in past, I've seen such AfDs where there have been zero participation (other than the nom), the article getting deleted because an admin agrees with the nomination. Perhaps, please let an admin do the job of closing this. Cheers! TheSpecialUser TSU 03:40, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi, nice to hear from you, how are things? I reverted my closure of which I closed per WP:NPASR ("If a nomination has received few or no comments from any editor besides the nominator, the discussion may be closed at the closer's discretion and best judgment."). I will leave this to an admin to make a soft deletion unless, someone comments before that and then the discussion might need to be relisted. Thanks for the guidance. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley 04:03, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the revert. AfDs are not relisted four times so this will be the debate's last run. I'll !vote there to make consensus a bit clearer. TheSpecialUser TSU 04:07, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Riley - please be careful when adding the "Note: This debate has been included in the list of Football-related deletion discussions" tag to AfDs - it refers to association football only, you have incorrectly tagged the AfDs on Shana Ting Lipton and Na Gaeil Óga CLG. Regards, GiantSnowman 12:46, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Thank for the heads up. I honestly don't know why I tagged Shana Ting Lipton, I must have had it mixed in with the templates I was pasting.. What would you recommend Na Gaeil Óga CLG be sorted as instead then? There must be some category for football teams. Thanks again. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley 15:27, 22 November 2012 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure sports clubs would feature in the 'List of organisation-related deletion discussions' page. GiantSnowman 08:50, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
Hey Riley, hope you don't mind me butting in, I'm also a member of WikiProject Deletion sorting. Articles on Gaelic football clubs, competitions etc. should be listed under Sports. You could also list it under Organizations buts it's more intend for Charities, Conservation groups, Animals rights groups etc. So I struck/crossed out football from Na Gaeil Óga CLG and removed it from this delsort page & listed it under Sports although it is meta list so technically it was already listed there but in the wrong place. I'm sure you noticed already but there's a full list of delsorts page here. Dispute Resolution – Volunteer Survey Invite

Hello ~riley. To follow up on the first survey in April, I am conducting a second survey to learn more about dispute resolution volunteers - their motivations for resolving disputes, the experiences they've had, and their ideas for the future. I would appreciate your thoughts. I hope that with the results of this survey, we will learn how to increase the amount of active, engaged volunteers, and further improve dispute resolution processes. The survey takes around five to ten minutes, and the information you provide will not be shared with third parties other than to assist in analyzing the results of the survey. No personally identifiable information will be released.

Please click HERE to participate.
Many thanks in advance for your comments and thoughts.

You are receiving this invitation because you have either listed yourself as a volunteer at a dispute resolution forum, or are a member of a dispute resolution committee. RileyBot ignoring demo= parameter

In this edit, RileyBot substituted the {{xsign}} template, despite the |demo=yes parameter being set. In general, bots should never modify templates with |nosubst=yes or |demo=yes (as is documented in many templates, such as Template:Db notice doc, and this convention is honored by other bots such as User:AnomieBOT). Thanks. --Ahecht (TALK

Fairly minor thing. Your signature contains an external link which looks unnecessary; you should be able to replace it with an internal link and shorten the code. — Earwig talk 19:15, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Speedy deletion at :w:mdf

Hi!
This is Farhad from m:Wikipedias in the languages of Russia project.
I noted your activity marking article stubs for speedy deletion @ mdf: & would like to request you to explain the reason. That wiki doesn't have such a policy and it doesn't fall under en:Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion.
This dormant wiki has a total language community of about 2000 native speakers (mostly computer-illeterate seniors, I live in a nearby region) and an interwiki linked terminologic glossary they managed to create is an important tool I would rather see kept.
Regards, --Frhdkazan (talk) 10:54, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

@Frhdkazan: Yes, the wiki does not have a speedy deletion criteria, "speedy deletion" just applies deletion without a week long discussion. Perhaps I'm missing something, but the articles I requested deletion for were not stubs, for them to be stubs they'd need adequate context. Speaking through my CVN/SWMT experience, articles with little or no context usually end up being speedily deleted - regardless of the project, unless local policy says otherwise. It is not appropriate to have blank articles that only exist for interwiki links, and if these articles were indeed stubs, they should be marked as such with a template. Please do correct me if I'm wrong, but rechecking some of the contributions in question; these articles met the "general criteria" for speedy deletion that we use as part of the SWMT. Interwiki linked terminological glossary is indeed important, but articles should only be created if there is context to go with them. Creating an article results in a blue link, that implies there is information to be read. Another reason to delete these pages is that by having them exist, they show as real articles when viewing the same article in a different language. (i.e. By having mdf:Культурсь exists, it shows on Culture that the article is available in mdf to read, which is misleading) I hope that makes sense. :) -- Cheers, Riley 01:18, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
Hi there. The point is that someone put time and effort in growing the wiki by creating "those article stubs" and linking them with articles in other languages. What that someone did is good for a language whose native speakers are dying out and are too few to publish books, dictionaries or encyclopedias for their youth in a traditional way. In digital age, deleting those is like burning books ... There's a chance there won't be anyone who could recreate those later - who speaks the language and is willing to find/work with the limited number of books that it has. When on a wiki, put interests of that language users first would seem a good rule that would override any "general criteria" - similar to Hippocratic Oath. By the way, is there a way to engage all SWMT members into making constructive contribution on small wikis (like categorization and formatting, etc.), for every deletion they make? --Frhdkazan (talk) 05:35, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
@Frhdkazan: I understand where you are coming from, but I cannot agree that these articles are stubs. An article with zero content cannot be a stub. I don't see what time and effort you speak of in terms of "linking them with articles in other languages", as shown (1,2,3) many of these articles were never linked with articles in other languages, just blank pages categorized. Most, if not all, of the interwiki links were additions of bots (since removed as there is now wikidata.) It can't be "burning books", they have zero content, this is more like burning blank printer paper. In regards to SWMT doing categorization and formatting, those responsibilities are generally left to the community of the wikimedia project in question. -- Cheers, Riley 05:48, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
I see no reason to apply uniform standards cross-wiki, as all communities differ in size and available resources. Keeping mdfwiki's title-only stubs will do that language community much more good than cause discom:::@Frhdkazan:fort to other wiki readers. --Frhdkazan (talk) 15:04, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
@Frhdkazan: The reason why there are uniform standards cross-wiki, is as a said above, because these blank articles are being linked on other language wikis and wikidata. As it is effecting other wikis, the cross-wiki standards are being brought in to question. A blank article should not be created purely for the sake of interwiki links. Looking more into depth, at least 40% of the articles I tagged do not even have interwiki links. (i.e. mdf:Ломаньтъналонь тонафнемакссь (социологиесь), mdf:Ваймонь содамась (псикологиесь), mdf:Эрямопингсь, mdf:Содаф ломатть, mdf:Покодема тевсь etc) What is your reasoning for these pages? -- Cheers, Riley 22:02, 30 January 2016 (UTC)
Agree, title only page without interwikis or links to it inside the project is not valuable and can be deleted without any damage for any language revitalization project that might use the wiki.--Frhdkazan (talk) 09:11, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

The term Self-Directed Learning

Have you read Malcolm Knowles? He popularized the term decades ago. There is an established association for it, Google the term you'll see posts almost every day of books, magazine articles, videos, etc that use it.

It's nothing like autodydactism. Would you please help me and stop the forward you you seem to insist on continuing? Thanks! JohnSWren (talk) 01:38, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

I have no idea what it is, and frankly, I have no interest. The only reason I undid your edit was because you cannot leave a page in this state. Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "insist on continuing", I edited the page twice at least a week ago.. -- Cheers, Riley

Sturm und Drang

Sorry if you're inconvenienced by the rangeblock on 92.24.104.0/22. You don't need to be told that it's perfectly legitimate for an editor to deregister and edit as an IP, especially when the username is unsuitable. Unfortunately, Sunshine has unorthodox ideas on the use of the toolkit - for example he has protected the reference desk for three months although a hundred editors and administrators have told him not to and nobody supports the move. In January he narrowly escaped a de - sysop for abuse.

It might be worth making an unblock request at ANI - there are many sympathetic administrators there. All the best, 78.145.18.154 (talk) 10:14, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

DRN help needed and volunteer roll call

You are receiving this message because you have listed yourself on the list of volunteers at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/Volunteering#List of the DRN volunteers.

First, assistance is needed at DRN. We have recently closed a number of cases without any services being provided for lack of a volunteer willing to take the case. There are at least three cases awaiting a volunteer at this moment. Please consider taking one.

Second, this is a volunteer roll call. If you remain interested in helping at DRN and are willing to actively do so by taking at least one case (and seeing it through) or helping with administrative matters at least once per calendar month, please add your name to this roll call list. Individuals currently on the principal volunteer list who do not add their name on the roll call list will be removed from the principal volunteer list after June 30, 2016 unless the DRN Coordinator chooses to retain their name for the best interest of DRN or the encyclopedia. Individuals whose names are removed after June 30, 2016, should feel free to re-add their names to the principal volunteer list, but are respectfully requested not to do so unless they are willing to take part at DRN at least one time per month as noted above. No one is going to be monitoring to see if you live up to that commitment, but we respectfully ask that you either live up to it or remove your name from the principal volunteer list.

Protection of this page

This user told me to contact on the user talk page, so here's the official request. On 31 March 2016, Magioladitis protected User talk:Riley Huntley with "Move=Require autoconfirmed or confirmed access" because of page move vandalism, but that protection level was wrong. The protection level of both that page and this page should instead be "Move=Require administrator access". The message was removed from User talk:Magioladitis and the WP:RFPP request was declined. GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 00:46, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

@GeoffreyT2000: I am at a loss to why you are even making an "official" request or getting involved with a protection that has no effect on any one other than myself. The reason why the protection is not "move=sysop" is so that 1) I can move my talk page for easy archiving in the way I prefer 2) To not interfere with my rename which just occured and 3) because the only move vandalism was by non-autoconfirmed users. I encourage you to focus on useful contributions instead of meddling in user page protections that do not effect you. ~riley (talk) 00:51, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
@~riley and Magioladitis: There has been no move vandalism by non-autoconfirmed users, since unconfirmed users cannot move pages, whatever the protection on the page (see WP:CONFIRM and WP:MOVE particularly WP:MOVE#Move restrictions). If you are thinking of the move by Rj15rj15 at 22:54, 30 March 2016, they had become autoconfirmed more than sixteen hours earlier, at 06:35, 30 March 2016, that being their tenth edit.
In short: setting "Move=Require autoconfirmed or confirmed access" is pointless. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:01, 5 May 2016 (UTC)
So unless we're looking to make work, it's fine as is because clearly, theres been no other vandalism to worry about. :) ~riley (talk) 16:18, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

New Page Review needs your help

Hi ~riley,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

Dreaded 45 day list

Hello, just here to remind you to login to the ACC interface, you're on the dreaded 45 day list. Thanx, - Mlpearc (open channel) 20:53, 13 March 2017 (UTC)

Hey Riley, I just check your 'tribs and the message at the top of your talk, I'm going to suspend your account for security reasons, I hope you're feeling better. Just ping me when you're back and I'll activate you account. again hope you are well, Cheers, - Mlpearc (open channel) 20:58, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
@Mlpearc: My apologies for the confusion, that message is old and due to be replaced. I am not active here, but on Commons. Please unsuspend as I am actively mailing list moderating for ACC. ~riley (talk)
Glad to hear you're OK, I'll unsuspended your account in a second, but Stwalkerster or Fastlizard will have to restore the IRC channel and mailing list. Again glad you're OK :) - Mlpearc (open channel) 03:14, 14 March 2017 (UTC)
Hey Riley, I'm also glad to hear you're okay. I've gone ahead and restored your access to IRC and the mailing list since you were unsuspended very shortly after the original suspension. As a reminder, though, please remember that the best way to ensure that you aren't suspended for inactivity is to log in to the tool at least once every 45 days; you don't even have to handle any requests, just log in. Unfortunately, it's the only way for us to know you're active since it's impossible to see if you (or anyone else) is performing list moderator actions, and in the future - depending on who is reviewing the 45 day inactive list - it cannot be guaranteed that you'll receive warning of an inactivity suspension beforehand or afterwards (besides the automatic "access suspended" email from ACC). But anyway, welcome back I suppose! --FastLizard4 (talkcontribs) 07:14, 14 March 2017 (UTC)

Thank you. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 11:35, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

PS: I blanked the page because it was generating non-existent categories which clutter up Special:WantedCategories, where editors are busy trying to clear a huge backlog. If you restore the page, please can ensure that it doesn't do that? Thanks! --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 11:36, 30 March 2017 (UTC)
