misses Pluto ==> misses planet Pluto ???

The object itself is still there. --Ettrig (talk) 11:52, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

But its status has been so badly diminished - how sad for the poor soul who discovered and named it!--JimmyButler(talk) 15:01, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
Actually after research: Pluto is now considered the largest member of a distinct population. so it has gone from a tiny planet to the biggest 'something'. Guess that's one way to look big - associate with smaller people.--JimmyButler (talk) 18:37, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Warning

Please stop introducing jokes into articles, such as those you created at Croatan High School. Wikipedia is a serious encyclopedia, and contributions of this type are consideredvandalism. Continuing to add jokes and other disruptive content into articles may lead to your beingblocked from editing. Any future incidents of this nature and you will be dropped from the AP Biology Project/ J. Butler

Sorry, someone was using my computer this morning and must have edited that with my account. I would not have called myself gay on wikipedia. Vance Miller 18:55, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
If your account is compromised, it may be permanently blocked unless you can prove you are its rightful owner. I will consider your proclamation that you are not gay or at least would not announce it to the world if you were, as said proof. I'm guessing ... you failed to log out?--JimmyButler (talk) 21:18, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
I walked away from my computer to talk to a teacher, and another student took it and started vandalizing my facebook page. I didn't know that they also did something on wikipedia, or I would have undone it. The gay thing is just a stupid rumor... – Vance Miller 23:17, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
Stricken, you may wish to check your contributions tab occasionally to see if they have hi-jacked your account. If the "another student" happens to be one of our class members; they too have been fore-warned; I have little tolerance for such silliness.--JimmyButler (talk) 01:59, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
One of the biggest problems on Wikipedia is vandalism. The following is a humourous essay on vandalism and a particular common form of it:meta:Friends of gays should not be allowed to edit articles This page contains material intended to be humorous. It should not be taken seriously or literally. Cheers! Wassupwestcoast (talk) 02:16, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Umm... Vance, yo, it's Dom from class. How on God's Green Earth do you get pictures into an article??????--NYMFan69-86 (talk) 21:10, 9 November 2009 (UTC)

Monitoring for Vandalism

Reverting "bad edits" is a boring; yet necessary task on Wikipedia. The fact that you still watch your article and (based on a recent edit by you) are willing to take the time to revert any damages is very responsible. This is worthy of noting when you negotiate your grade in May. Cheers --JimmyButler (talk) 03:30, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Carapache

Thanks for correcting my misspelling. Did you really want to know? Wikipedia has a fairly good description of carapace. And I found one forcarapache also. Would they be pronounced the same? --Ettrig (talk) 17:17, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

I looked at the carapache article and I wasn't sure how it related to turtles. I really didn't know whether it had anything to do with turtles or not. Vancemiller (talk · contribs · count · email) 19:11, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

Page #s for Bown et al

That's why you got the A. For the Bowen ref. I used it three times. The first two came from page 3731; while the last cite was from 3733. Can you clean it so the page numbers are included in the cite? Proof as well - was trying to elaborate on what was essentially already there. There is also an excellent map explaining that migratory route. There is an option of locating a map of the pacific basin and essentially duplicate the info. Great example of challenges to conservation when different regions regulate protection of different stages of life cycle. --JimmyButler (talk) 01:29, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

Done Were you also suggesting to incorporate that map of their migration? Vancemiller (talk · contribs · count · email) 02:04, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
Its a thought on the map. Also here is the source for the info under threats section regarding plastic consumption- perhaps you could place it at the end of that paragraph? Can you give a ref. under predation (end of paragraph about raccoons) using this source (page 62) [[1]]?--JimmyButler (talk) 17:24, 28 May 2010 (UTC)'

Yes; I can. Vancemiller (talk · contribs · count · email) 23:52, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
I also included it for the paragraph about red foxes. Is that correct? Vancemiller (talk · contribs · count · email) 23:55, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

FA concerns

JimBleaks is almost a supporter! He commented on a few additional concerns. He says that there is a huge blank space before the distribution map on his browser. I was wondering if you had this problem and if you knew how to fix it.

I'll talk to him about this... Vancemiller (talk · contribs · count · email) 14:34, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Also, there is information about the subspecies that states they are genetically different in the Spotila book. Maybe you can offer a better interpretation, but for me it is hard to make it seem substantial. Here is the wording from the book: "Mitochondrial DNA has also been a useful tool for understanding the relationships among nesting populations within regions. During the most recent glacial period in North America, the beaches of northern Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina were too cold for sea turtle eggs to survive and develop. About 12,000 years ago the climate began to warm and loggerheads started to move north and colonize those northern beaches. thus the females nesting from northern Florida to North Carolina belong to a different genetic population than those nesting in the rest of Florida. In fact, those turtles are a unique demographic (population) unit. If one of those colonies is lost it is not likely to be replaced in our lifetimes."

If you can find a way to incorporate this please do so.--TimHAllstr (talk) 14:19, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

I'll work on this, what page is it from? Vancemiller (talk · contribs · count · email) 14:34, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

I suspect there is much more information that out there that should be addressed. too many edits after support has been given can be problematic if not unfair to the reviewers; however, several sections could really be expanded and still not tread into trivia. Cool! I'm glad you took that so well! As far as me needing help with complex codes...oh god yes!!! If you scan the article quickly you will likely notice two large drop-down menus...I would like those to be the same color as the tables within them and for the tables to be centered. Can you do this? Also, any tips on formatting picture layouts (particularly within the description section...I've gotten some comments on how weird it looks). Thanks!--NYMFan69-86 (talk) 17:09, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
Kind of seems like I'm piling it on here, but, if its somehow possible to make that last sentence under Life cycle a caption to the above table, that would be great.  :-} NYMFan69-86 (talk) 17:17, 19 October 2010 (UTC)
Someone removed the collapsible tables, but I centered the tables anyway. On the pictures, they should alternate, and the animal should face into the text. Alt text and other things are useful too. I’ll check for that. — Vancemiller (talk · contribs · count · email) 15:39, 20 October 2010 (UTC)
Yes, someone came along and made a few things look better (they were pretty ugly before). I'm pretty sure I have alt text for all the images, however those are being rearranged/added/taken out at an alarming rate due to some misnaming over at commons (which is in the process of being sorted out). Four subspecies really does complicate things a bit.--NYMFan69-86 (talk) 18:14, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

Any Help?

Hello, my name is Marissa and I am now a part of Mr. Butler's wikipedia project. I have heard you have been helpful to other students and that your articles were very well done. I was just wondering if you have any suggestions for me on how to tackle this project. I was also wondering if a case came up that I needed help, that you might be able to guide me in the right direction(with problems in formatting, coding, etc.) Any help or suggestions you have to offer me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time. Marissa927 (talk) 01:32, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

hmm... Where to start?
Choosing your topic
  • In choosing your article, make sure to choose a topic with lots of credible resources to back it up. The big mistake I made with my first article was not researching before choosing. (A quick google search does not constitute research.) Research, research, research, and then, after all that researching, if you decide that perhaps the topic you were researching isn't the best, throw away all that research and research a different topic. Rinse and repeat ad libitum.
  • Choose a topic that is at least slightly interesting, or somehow relevant to you. It's really hard to write an article on something that 1) you might not understand or 2) are not intrigued by, viz, don't pick some obscure disease that is poorly understood, like hypertrichosis. An animal, perhaps?
Helpful tools
If you are "computer-savvy" enough to change the settings of your account, labeled: My Preferences, then you might find a few/many helpful tools just waiting to be enabled. Some are:
1. Recent Changes>Enhanced recent changes (requires JavaScript)
2. Watchlist>Expand watchlist to show all changes, not just the most recent
3. Gadgets>Editing>Wiki-ed (awesome)
4. Gadgets>Appearance>"Display an assessment of an article's quality..."
5. Gadgets are pretty useful for doing things faster or for discovering more ways to do things.... Try them out...
Coding
  • Basically, everything on wikipedia follows a template. If you don't know how to do something you have a few options. Ask, search, or copy.
  • If you ask, you might have to wait a while before someone can answer your question, though they may explain it to you magnificently.
  • If you search Wikipedia, you may/will find a page with information on the specific template including instructions on how to fill it out correctly. Very useful... A common search would be like... "Wikipedia:taxobox" to find information on the taxonomy box included on every animal page.
  • If you copy, (it's not bad...) just find an article which has the specific element you were looking for, and copy the code. Change it to match your article and paste. Use discretion, of course.
  • The best method is probably a combination of all three, however personally I prefer to only use templates. After all, if you want your article to be the best, you should make your formatting the best it can be.
I suppose I've written enough for now... If anything is confusing or if you have questions, please ask them. One additional piece of cliché advice: Don't procrastinate! Really though, this project is one that requires you to work (edit) in order for you to understand what you're doing. If you don't work, you will have no experience with editing, and your article will reflect that. Don't despair though, editing will be fun.
Vancemiller (talk · contribs · count · email) 02:22, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
lol Der Elbenkoenig (talk) 05:28, 2 October 2011 (UTC)
I probably haven't answered any of your current questions, since this was all more futuristic advice, so if you or any of your colleagues have specific questions, don't hesitate to ask. I'll try my best to point you in a moderately helpful direction. Vancemiller (talk · contribs · count · email) 01:56, 3 October 2011 (UTC)
Thank you so much! I may have questions later on, but those were some great tips. I'll keep them in mind as we get deeper into the project. For now, just one more request; if you had/have or remember any helpful resource websites or compilations of journals and articles that you used it would greatly benefit the class. If you just tell me the links I will post them on the project discussion page for this year so the whole class can use them. Thanks again! Marissa927 (talk) 21:56, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
A resource for resources? Well, surprisingly, the public library is a good source of books. Really though, depending on what you choose, you might find some good information there. As far as online resources go, I think we may have gained access to a UNC database of some sort, though I'm not sure if it is still available (maybe JimmyButler knows...). Also the school has/had access to a mildly useful database of its own, though now it appears not to work (It might only work at Croatan): http://www.carteretcountyschools.org/chs/mediacen/ (click the first cougar in the upper left). Google is also a friend, though use discretion. Vancemiller (talk · contribs · count · email) 00:33, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks again! I'll check out the school's site and talk to JimmyButler about UNC. — Precedingunsigned comment added by Marissa927 (talkcontribs) 12:00, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
I'm not so sure about the okay-ness of posting the secret way to the database on a public place such as this one... if the owners/operators of the database were to see it, they might make a big deal out of it. The whole point of the oddly hidden link is so that they can make it available to Croatan students (it being rented/paid for in some way by Croatan) and not to non-Croatan students without password-protecting it; when I first learned of its method of location, I was surprised they allowed even such crufty security as that. Unfortunately, I've also added a link to that same database to the WP:APBIO talk page... Der Elbenkoenig (talk) 01:23, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
Apparently we no longer have access to that specific database now (As per yesterday). Vancemiller (talk · contribs · count · email) 01:34, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Brûûēçh

Vance, When we were sophomores and you were taking the challenge AP Biology, I envied you and looked up to you. I admired your dedication and effort(although at times your devotion to the labour of AP Bio made you a less fun person). At the time when you were suffering under the whip of Mr. Butler, I was in the classroom of Mr. Coffey learning a basic understanding of chemistry. And that's what I see between you and me: chemistry. I consider you a bro, as well as a breh and a bruah and a brēah (depending on the season and level of deixis), but in this challenge that it has come my time to undertake, I humbly submit myself to you as an apprentice, a disciple, and your humble servant. Teach me the path to WikiEnlightenment and I will be forever in your debt.Der Elbenkoenig (talk) 05:49, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

Bræ, the path to WikiEnlightenment begins at the WP:MOS. Good luck on your quest. —Vancemiller (talk · contribs · count · email) 13:08, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

The Log

Hi Vance, I notice that the Loggerhead had 19 000 page views in November. You have readers! I think it should be shown on the front page soon. --Ettrig (talk) 22:33, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Great! Perhaps I'll go back and fix it up soon. That "symbol" section bothers me... Vancemiller (talk · contribs · count · email) 22:50, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Main page appearance: loggerhead sea turtle

This is a note to let the main editors of loggerhead sea turtle know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on January 4, 2012. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 4, 2012. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

A loggerhead turtle at Océanopolis, Brest, France

The loggerhead sea turtle is an oceanic turtle distributed throughout the world. An adult weighs around 135 kilograms (298 lb), with the largest specimens weighing in at more than 454 kilograms (1,001 lb). The skin ranges from yellow to brown in color, and the shell is typically reddish-brown. Found in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans as well as the Mediterranean Sea, the loggerhead sea turtle spends most of its life in saltwater and estuarine habitats, with females briefly coming ashore to lay eggs. The loggerhead sea turtle has a low reproductive rate and a lifespan of 47–67 years. Omnivorous, the species feeds mainly on bottom dwelling invertebrates. Its large and powerful jaws serve as an effective tool in dismantling its prey. Loggerheads are considered an endangered species and are protected by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Turtle excluder devices (TEDs) have been implemented in efforts to reduce mortality by providing the turtle an escape route. Loss of suitable nesting beaches and the introduction of exotic predators has also taken a toll on loggerhead populations. Efforts to restore their numbers will require international cooperation since the turtles roam vast areas of ocean and critical nesting beaches are scattered among several countries. (more...)

Stray sandbox page

Hi. In the list of pages tagged for deletion I came across one named "Wikipedia:Vancemiller/sandbox". I have moved it to User:Vancemiller/sandbox which I guess is where you meant it to be. It looks like a draft for your user page: if you have finished with it, just put {{db-user}} at the top and it will be deleted. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 10:10, 1 June 2012 (UTC)
