Proposed Deletion

Hi Travellingcari, thanks for all your work on the notability backlog! Just wanted to make sure that you knew about the proposed deletion process as an alternative to AfD. Noncontroversial deletions (like Last Supper Drama at Moreland Baptist Church) can be proposed for deletion as a shortcut to the whole AfD process. I find that it's a good way to thin out the obviously non-notable articles before sending the truly borderline ones to AfD. Jfire (talk) 04:34, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks! I have been flooding AfD a bit this weekend, haven't I? To be honest, I was a little unsure about the PROD process. I did it once to a handful of articles but it turned out it was a bit more contentious than I anticipated so I've been a little gunshy. I know to speedy some, mainly spam and blatant copyright violations, but when it's in the middle I'm not sure. I'll have more of a look through the PROD process this week. Thanks again for noticing the work, I've made it my goal to get April 2007 down to a manageable number. I've had some fun fixing up ones that could pass once fixed. Others, I'm not sure about, like Danni Leigh and Curtis W. Harris but I'm glad to have left the article in better shape than I found it -- even if they eventually hit the deletion pile. Travellingcari (talk) 04:52, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

I removed the speedy tag on Life Extension Foundation. I think the disputes between this group and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration make it notable. Please see http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Life+Extension+Foundation%22+site%3Afda.gov This doesn't mean that I agree with the Life Extension Foundation. --Eastmain (talk) 06:10, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know, somehow I missed this and was trying to work out what happened. I actually took it to AfD to see what happens. I don't think it's notable but we;ll see what consensus is. Have a good day! Travellingcari (talk) 19:16, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Dresden Flood

I disagree with the addition of the bombing of Dresden in the 2002 European floods article. The bombing occurred 57 years ago (in the article) and reunification 12 years ago, they don't relate to the flooding other than the fact that both events occurred in the same city. It is like mentioning the firebombing of Kobe in the Great Hanshin Earthquake article, ultimately it does not advance one's knowledge of the event discussed in the article. Thanks a ton for cleaning up the BR page. It really needed some help. Thanks again. Just for curiosity, how did you find the page? T/@Sniperz11 editssign 20:47, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

I wouldnt call it a pet project, but yes, I've been trying to improve it for some time now. Thanks a lot for the help. T/@Sniperz11 editssign 21:35, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Yes ma'am... he's been at it for the past 2 days. I've tried to discuss it on his talk page, but he seems to have ignored it, and all the links I've given. I'll handle this. Although I really want to AGF, and Hanlon's Razor (Which seems ideal in this case, I'm finding it hard to do that. Anyway, looking at his previous edits... he does seem to have a way about him.
I'm checking out the links... thanks for them. Most of the cyrillics and Chinese links quote Bharat Rakshak, but thats not enough to cite anything (except maybe for the fact that BR is well known). I'm also searching through the Govt. websites. I found This link from the Indian Navy, which describes Bharat Rakshak (search for Bharat in it). all are going in.
I think I'll wait for him to finish his rampage, then revert to the old version and add changes. He does seem to have some valid and useful edits, and I'll use them as well. T/@Sniperz11 editssign 22:31, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. he's started a discussion here. Hopefully, that will bring something out of it. If I need any help, I'll be sure to let you know. Thanks. T/@Sniperz11 editssign 02:27, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Bob cuba

ha ha, yup... me and some others (possibly you?) were fixing it at the same time, i think. or in my case, bodging around trying to fix it ;-) done now anyway. cheers, tomasz. 19:06, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

I checked out the page. There is absolutely no encyclopedic information there. Its Graffiti. The village itself is non-notable, as you pointed out. Theres no data even on the Census of India website (which has details for even very small villages.

I've put it up for AfD at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Blathur.

Cheers. T/@Sniperz11 editssign 21:10, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

I dont think the AfD will pass... so I think we'll have to clear up the mess. I'm looking for information on Blathur. Hopefully, I should find some. Plus, I'll look within Census website also... might be something I missed out.
Hows NY this time of year? I'm 10 hrs behind you - around 3 am here. T/@Sniperz11 editssign 21:21, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
I saw the history actually. The initial version isn't that bad really. Its the later versions that made it worse. I'm now checking other Indian village pages to see the format for such pages.
I made a mistake... we're 10 hrs ahead. Its Friday now over here. I haven't really been out of India, except for one trip to Sri Lanka and another to Malaysia, but apart from that, not really. I've really wanted to visit US and NY. My Uncle lives in SF, so thats another place I want to see. Hopefully I can come there for Grad studies. US is where all the good work is. T/@Sniperz11 editssign 21:36, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
I'm thinking of studying electronics, specifically relating to communications. Thats really a big field with good prospects at the moment. Hows school going? Is it tough to manage work and studies? I've been to Singapore also... same leg as the Malaysia trip. Was there for 2 days. Nice place, but not really a lot to see. I guess people who live there must be really bored. Hopefully the economy will be stable. Its a big upheaval going on right now. and US being the biggest piece of wood on the ship, if it rolls, all the other barrels also roll... Our stock Markets also plunged a week or so ago - dropped by 5% on the same day. Big fall, in response to fall in the US stocks. T/@Sniperz11 editssign 22:07, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
I've searched the census of India records - there's no record of a Blathur. Still, the site was not accessing properly, so I'll check again. Census records are pretty good... even villages with 80 people have a record, so if this is as big, it should be recorded. I searched Google Earth for the location, but the area is too blurred to see anything. I got a news source for this Village. Apparently, its a stronghold for the Communist Party. Obviously its important and should have a record. Otherwise, theres absolutely nothing.
No problem... We have a vacation today, so I'll be online for most of the day. Tomorrow and day after are weekends, and I should be online as well. T/@Sniperz11 editssign 22:26, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

(unindent)I've asked some editors who know Malayalam to help with this, although i dont think there will be much extra that comes out. I've added an infobox to the page, with some information. Hopefully that should be fine. There isn't really a festival over here... its just an administrative vacation. I dunno why it is, but I think its for account keeping. T/@Sniperz11 editssign 05:35, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

I agree... it doesn't make sense creating a page for a village of only few people. Anyway, we'll have to work within the system. No option. Have a good day at work, and a great weekend after. T/@Sniperz11 editssign 13:17, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
I saw your edit... makes sense. My week was pretty good. TGIF. T/@Sniperz11editssign 01:37, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Non-notable articles

Hi Travellingcari. I'm very new to Wikipedia and want to provide worthwhile content. I made a few changes to my recent entry...as well as elaborated on the sources mentioned in it. I was just wondering if you have any other suggestions for how it can be improved? Thanks in advance. Best,--Kristahtq (talk) 16:30, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

  • Thanks again for your response Carianne. I understand both the WP:COI and WP:ORG and consider myself the liaison between the two parties (HTQ and wiki). If I were simply here to advance one point of view, I wouldn't be doing my best to understand, accommodate and enhance the other. So again, I'm very grateful you're taking the time to help me. HometownQuotes is not an insurance company or agency - no one there writes insurance. The company connects consumers with insurance agents. It helps insurance agents find consumers they otherwise might not have found...and helps individuals get multiple insurance quotes to help them comparison shop for insurance. HometownQuotes works with consumers and agents across the country, so it is beginning to earn national recognition - like the Inc.com mention --Kristahtq (talk) 16:53, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Hello, I closed the AfD, as after a 5 day listing consensus had been reached. In regards to your question, it had not been answered after 30 hours, and there appeared to be no prospect of further discussion. In regards to the question which you asked, perhaps you could discuss the issue concerned with the 'keep' commenters on his/her talk page, or you could start the debate here at WP:NPT, as a new policy/guideline with regards to places and transportation is currently being formulated; I'm sure your input will be appreciated. If you have any other questions feel free to ask me. Cheers, EJF (talk) 19:49, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi there Travellingcari! I've noticed you in the AfD circle quite a bit recently and I think you are doing great! Your noms seem well justified, your opinions seem to be backed by good policy. Just wanted to say thanks for your contributions in the AfD circle. I appreciate your contributions and I'm glad you "get it". You commented in the above linked AfD that you get confused with merge and redirect. Basically (not that you don't know this, but just in case), a merge means that the content (and history) of the article up for debate will be added to whatever article is deemed appropriate in the debate. If the article's contents are merged, a redirect of the AfD title would therefore be redirected to that parent article. If an AfD is closed with a result of Redirect only, it means that none of the content from the deleted article will be moved over to any other article. I usually vote Merge if I think there is valuable information in the article up for debate, (thereby meaning the page history needs to be kept per our GFDL license) or I vote Redirect if there simply isn't. The key difference for me is whether the article up for discussion is referenced or if it appears to be either an WP:OR article or a Pov Fork. I hope that clears this up. Again, you do great work in AfD. I'm glad you're a Wikipedian, and to be a bit cliché, "I hope you like the place, and decide to stay!" Cheers, and happy editing, Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 23:05, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Got your message. Yeah, that AfD was a weird one, but clearly no consensus. My basic reasoning was that the discussion was 20 days old (which is an age and a half in AfD world) and it didn't seem to be going anywhere. The article has a lot of strikes against it - Strike 1. WP:BLP says that anything about a real person (I presume he's still living - doesn't say otherwise) must be cited. Strike 2. Ufology, by definition, is unreliable so having reliable sources is a stretch at best. Strike 3: The sources that exist are foreign language. Yikes. I think that's why the AfD was as aged as it was and therefore no consensus emerged. I alluded that it should be renominated sometime in the future, don't know if that will ever happen though. I'll take a look at the other related AfD you asked about later today. Thanks travellingcari, Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 15:07, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi, are you gonna turn the article into a wikitionary type explanation now? Ryan4314 (talk) 18:25, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Sorry should've explained better (I was on the phone at the time), I mean, will you recreate the tearjerker article as a redirect to the wikitionary definition? I say this, because you said;
"On a sourceable level, I can't see this as anything more than a dictionary definition and it's already on Wiktionary."
so I just assumed you would, don't worry I don't care if u don't... Ryan4314 (talk) 18:37, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Is that what you wanted? Also, Do you want me to undo my closure and open up the AFD again? Happy Editing, Dustitalk to me 19:44, 19 February 2008 (UTC)
Already done. Trying to catch up to you two!  :-). I independently stumbled into this while closing old AfDs, I've already relisted it and commented at the DRV. Cheers, Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 19:47, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

No problem. Actually, I didn't even know the DRV existed. I was just closing out other AfDs, this one was simply next on the list but when I opened it I noticed it was already closed (and inappropriately at that). I undid the close and went to user:Dustihowe's talkpage and saw that I wasn't the first to have a problem! :-) You did the right thing bringing it to DRV. Good work once again! Whether the article is kept or deleted remains to be seen. Cheers, happy editing, Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 19:53, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Dragan Radulović

Ehm.. problem is that Dragan is *very* common Serbian first name, and Radulović is not uncommon last name, so there is a lot of different persons with this name. None of these seem to be about our Dragan Radulović. There is this sociologist, but the one in our article is not named as sociologist.

I see that Bosniak and Croat Wikipedia have short one-sentence articles about him. But these are two relatively smaller projects and I don't know about their notability criteria (do they have policies, and how firm they hold to those policies). To be precise, both of these (bs: and hr:) articles are identical, and probably copivio, because they're completely the same as this short bio on Belgrade's Dereta publishing house website (well known publishing company). It is hard to find hits about this one, because there are apparently several authors (one sociologist, one university professor..) with the same name.

Maybe the best solution might be to ask the original author to give the full bibliography (possibly with the info about how many copies of his books were printed/sold), and to apply the guidelines for journalists/writers notability. Good luck! Cheers :) -- Obradović Goran (talk 23:59, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Schaeffler Group

I strongly suspect that this article isn't copyvio. Basically, I believe that a representative of the Schaeffler group added it themselves to the wikipedia; and if so, under the terms of the wikipedia, they've licensed it to us. ;-)

Still, we have no way of proving that either way, it could have been a third party I suppose but the edits involved certainly didn't look like it, and given the COI involved, deletion on copyvio grounds would be funny, so I'm all for it. ;-)- (User) WolfKeeper (Talk) 15:46, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

Finding sources for articles through commercial databases

You mentioned that you sometimes run up against paywalls keeping you from accessing a news item or other potential reference. I realize that this can be frustrating. Your local library may offer free access to many online commercial databases, and you may be able to log on to those databases from your home through the library's web site by entering your library card number. Students and staff at colleges and universities may be able to access commercial databases through their school's library. If you don't have a current library card from your library, you should get one so that you can have remote access to the databases to which the library subscribes. What I did was look at around at other editors sigs that I liked, copy and pasted parts and colors, and then put it into the my box at my preferences. It took me a while though, I actually wanted one slightly different color, but if refused to "come-out". Quick speedy tutorial

There is often a confusion over the use of speedy deletion versus standard (prod/afd) deletion for articles, ESPECIALLY over notability concerns. The key difference between the two is that CSD A7 says that CERTAIN TYPES of articles can be speedy deleted if they don't claim importance, while WP:N says that articles can be deleted if they are about subjects that aren't notable. However, these notability criteria require investigation, which is why notability concerns are never speediable; they take time to determine if they are or are not met. A subject can claim to be important, which is something internal to the article (but subject to some guidelines) and still be non-notable, which is proved by sources EXTERNAL to the article.
Claiming to hold a job is never a claim of importance. So, if an article merely states that so-and-so is a musician, or a professor, or an author, and doesn't make any claims beyond that that show they are an IMPORTANT musician, an IMPORTANT author, etc. then they may be speedy deleted under A7. If you read the Fredfox article, no where does he make any claims of importance. Now, an article may make claims of importance (for example, a musician that won a contest, or has been signed to a major label, etc.) which would make them ineligible for speedy deletion, but may still turn out to be non-notable, and thus ultimately deleted.
The line between the two criteria is sometimes blurry a bit, which is why we have AFD. If an article comes to CSD and is borderline, there is no harm in sending it to AFD for a fuller discussion. If the AFD snowballs as a speedy-delete, it can still be speedy deleted, and need not wait the full 5 days. For those borderline cases, its quite OK to send it to AFD, even if people vote "speedy delete", and it never makes the 5 day standards waiting time, it DOESN'T mean that AFD was inappropriate. If you ever aren't sure, the conservative approach (using AFD, or perhaps PROD) is always fine. Save CSD for the eggregiously bad stuff, like "Billy is the coolest kid in Mr. Smiths english class" or "The Stinks are the best band in Kalamazoo!" and PROD or AFD the stuff that is at least open to debate. If you have any more questions, or need more clarification, feel free to ask me. I am availible any time to help! --Jayron32.talk.contribs 20:11, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Friendly pointer

Just pointing out if a page like Daniel Silva (writer) isn't all copyrighted content, especially if it has "...non-infringing content on either the page itself, or in the history, worth saving," it's much more advisable just to remove the copyrighted section than to nominate the entire article for deletion. Thanks for all the tagging and work though! 20:55, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

I noticed your edits to Drew Casper. Thanks for finding those references. You might want to note that there have been some changes to the cite template since you last acquainted yourself with it. For listing ISBN numbers, the guideline is longer to add them as "id=ISBN 123-456-78-X" but rather as "isbn=123-456-78-X". Note that the "isbn", like all other parameters, must be lowercase. Also, the parameter you entered as "year" should have been entered as "date" since you provided a full date. Cheers and keep up the good work, Robert K S (talk) 20:15, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi there! The reason for my note was that I know how Kirill contributes, and he wouldn't be creating an article on a person who does not meet the notability criteria. Belousov is included in the Great Soviet Encyclopedia[1], but I was hoping Kirill has some non-encyclopedia sources. Still, at any rate, a person notable enough to be included in one high-profile encyclopedia is notable enough to be included in Wikipedia. Speech writing: CEO Preparation and Coaching

Hello there. I wanted to mention a few things to you, and hopefully save you from some regrettable angst, as it seems that your contribution history is mostly positive. With regard to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Speech writing: CEO Preparation and Coaching it seems you have been focusing on the concern of copyright violation and not the actual reason the article was posted to afd. The issue with this article appears to be WP:Not, specifically WP:Not#Manual. The problem with your article is that it appears to be a manual on how to interact with and assist a CEO. Such "how to" articles are considered unencyclopedic and are generally deleted. And because you have written this manual yourself, taking bits and pieces of it from other sources, you are also straying into the realm of WP:Original Research. I think you will see what I mean if you read the guideline links I have provided you. Best, --Pgagnon999 (talk) 00:14, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Giving things a second look over, were you transferring a comment by another user to the afd page?--Pgagnon999 (talk) 00:24, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Wow, that's an ugly one. They certainly get that way from time to time. I wouldn't worry too much about the closing of that one, most admins that are willing to close know where to look when they see that giant tag on top, lots of strikeouts and "red usernames". If it's kept or deleted though, meh? In the scheme of things, it means either we have 2,200,000 articles, or 2,200,201. Daily we are bombarded with borderline articles on borderline notability brought by editors with borderline histories. When we have to be the most careful is when the articles fall into WP:BLP areas. Hello Travellingcari:

I see from your contrib list that you have a special interest in AFD's.

Based on that, can you tell me this - When an article is deleted, is it somehow still available if the content was wanted to restore the article or use it in another article?

Yikes! I just thanked "TenPoundHammer" for the barnstar by accident. However, I retracted the mistake and replaced it with an extremely uncivil comment in order to compensate. Thanks for the barnstar. Why do they call it a barnstar? No, please don't tell me, I want that to remain a mystery. But thank you. Mandsford (talk) 21:58, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
