Hello, Theodoreherman, and welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of the pages you created, such as User:Theodoreherman/sandbox, may not conform to some of Wikipedia's content policies and may not be retained. In short, the topic of an article must be notable and have already been the subject of publication by reliable and independent sources.

The Article Wizard is available to help you create an article, where it will be reviewed and considered for publication. For information on how to request a new article that can be created by someone else, see Requested articles. Hi, I appreciate being contacted and you are correct to note that I'm a newbie with little understanding of how to progress with my goal to create a Wikipedia entry for my deceased father-in-law, Colin Greenly. He was an accomplished visual artist with limited name recognition, though his works appeared in our nation's National Gallery and other prestigious institutions. I've hit a wall because I'm not proficient in Wikipedia protocols, and I don't expect to come up to speed on that anytime soon—as much as I'd like to. Any suggestions are more than welcome! Thank you!! Theodoreherman (talk) 12:26, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This is a rudimentary website we've created for Colin Greenly. Theodoreherman (talk) 12:30, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. A tag has been placed on User:Theodoreherman/sandbox requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section U5 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to consist of writings, information, discussions, or activities not closely related to Wikipedia's goals. Please note that Wikipedia is not a free web hosting service. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Control copyright icon Hello Theodoreherman! Your additions to Draft:Colin Greenly have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 21:23, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dianna--please see my email to you. I see that you've already made some edits to the wiki page I and another party are making for my father-in-law, Colin Greenly who passed away in 2014. Please tell me what i need to do to document the permissions I've been given to use content from www.colingreenly.com. This website was built by his widow, and I am expressly making this wiki page at her request. Please let me know what steps I need to take to preserve the work we've done on it so far and to ensure that it won't be deleted in the future. Thank you. Theodoreherman (talk) 22:18, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We need to have documentation that shows the copyright holders have given permission for the material to be copied to this website. Wikipedia has procedures in place for this purpose. Please see WP:Donating copyrighted materials for an explanation of how to do it. There's a sample permission email at WP:Consent.
Regardless of the copyright issue, Wikipedia is not the place for hosting a memorial page for a non-notable person. See WP:NOTWEBHOST. We don't create articles on people who don't meet our notability requirements. See Wikipedia:Notability (people) for more info on that topic. — Diannaa (talk) 23:34, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am confident that I will be able to substantiative the notability of the subject. The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC is in possession of his work, along with other prestigious art institutions and galleries, e.g. Museum of Modern Art: B. Colin Greenly | MoMA. I've been in touch with the Laurie Zadek who is the person who published the www.colingreenly.com website and she will soon issue proof of permission for me to use copyrighted material in accordance with Wikipedia's protocols. Please be considerate in your communications, it will be gratefully appreciated. Thank you. Theodoreherman (talk) 01:08, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Dianna,
Laurie Zadek, the wife of the deceased Colin Greenly, as the owner of the www.colingreenly.com website, has removed the copyright notice on the entire website. Will that suffice for me to proceed with the editing of this wikipage? Theodoreherman (talk) 17:57, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No it will not, because under current copyright law, literary works are subject to copyright whether they are tagged as such or not. No registration is required, and no copyright notice is required. If the copyright holder wishes to release this material under a compatible license, please see WP:Requesting copyright permission for an explanation of how to do it. There's a sample permission email at WP:Consent. — Diannaa (talk) 18:58, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That permission email has now been sent. Would you like to have a copy of it sent to you? As a next step, will Laurie Zadek receive a confirmation of receipt of her permission email? I am asking because I want to know when I can officially proceed with my work on this webpage. Thank you. -Ted Herman Theodoreherman (talk) 20:41, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Recent edit reversion

[edit]

In this edit here, I reverted some information that appears to be a violation of our copyright policy.

I provided a brief summary of the problem in the edit summary, which should be visible just below my name. You can also click on the "view history" tab in the article to see the recent history of the article. This should be an edit with my name, and a parenthetical comment explaining why your edit was reverted. If that information is not sufficient to explain the situation, please ask.

I do occasionally make mistakes. We get hundreds of reports of potential copyright violations every week, and sometimes there are false positives, for a variety of reasons. (Perhaps the material was moved from another Wikipedia article, or the material was properly licensed but the license information was not obvious, or the material is in the public domain but I didn't realize it was public domain, and there can be other situations generating a report to our Copy Patrol tool that turn out not to be actual copyright violations.) If you think my edit was mistaken, please politely let me know and I will investigate. S Philbrick(Talk) 01:27, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please investigate. The source for my most recent edits are covered by a CC license which is present on the site itself: www.colingreenly.com. Perhaps I should have added another citation to that website when I added the new content re: his barn. Please let me know what I need to do to rectify this and so I can restore that content to this draft article. thank you. Theodoreherman (talk) 02:29, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
