Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- You can now use Google Translate in the content translation tool. [1][2]
- You can now add captions to files on Commons. Captions are short descriptions of the file. They can be translated to all languages we use. They can't use wikitext markup.
- Earlier a quoted HTML attribute had to be followed by a space. Now it doesn't. This means that some pages could look different when you save them even if you didn't edit that part of the text. [3][4]
- Templates with <templatestyles> could not show the difference between the live template and the sandbox version when they were tested. This has now been fixed. <templatestyles> has a new
wrapper
parameter now. You can use it for selectors like.mw-parser-output <wrapper parameter value> <selector from CSS page>
. [5]
Problems
- When you see an edit in the recent changes feed or in the history of a page some of them have tags. Some tags are added automatically. You can also add tags manually. Tags for edits that have been added manually can be edited. This didn't work for a little while. This has now been fixed. [6]
Changes later this week
- You can move files from your wiki to Wikimedia Commons and keep the file history with the new FileExporter. It will be a beta feature on all wikis from 16 January. If you want to test it you activate it and check your wiki's configuration file.
- Users who could cause more damage to the wikis if someone took over their account have to have more secure passwords. This includes administrators and other user groups. They can't use passwords that are in a list of common passwords. Accounts with common passwords are easy to take over. The list of common passwords was made longer a few weeks ago and has a different error message. Some user groups have been added to those who can't use common passwords. This is to protect all accounts with user rights that could cause damage. [7]
- The AbuseFilter variable
minor_edit
has been removed. It was deprecated in 2016. Now you can't use it. You can fix the filters using it. You can find them if you use the search bar on Special:AbuseFilter. - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from January 15

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023
Hello Benison,
- Backlog
The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.
- 2022 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!
Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)
New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js
to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js
Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.
Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

- Hi. Kindly refer to User:The Herald/Terms and Conditions for more details. In a nutshell, the official Wikipedia policy defines "vandalism" as follows:
“ | Vandalism is any addition, removal, or change of content made in a deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of Wikipedia. | ” |
— from Wikipedia:Vandalism |
- Hence, your disruption of section headings, per WP:MOS constituted as vandalism. Thank you :) The Herald (Benison) (talk) 08:41, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
Hi
Hello mate. I've fixed it now. I didn't add the {unbulleted list} part so the section disappeared altogether. I tried previewing on my next attempt and it came out right so I published that one. I'll make sure I preview stuff first when I'm trying new things in future.

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023
Hello Benison,
Backlog
Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.
Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.
Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.
You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.
Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Revert
I did explain why; see the edit summary. Please revert yourself and delete your message. Thank you. 86.88.105.173 (talk) 07:17, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- The links come under WP:ELYES and WP:ELMAYBE. Your edit summary do not give an explanation, but rather just a pipe link to WP:EL. Kindly elaborate your reason and then discuss it in the talk page for consensus to remove external links. Thank you. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 07:22, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- You are responsible for the inclusion, so the burden is on you to get consensus for an exception to the longstanding unambiguous policy. If you disagree with the policy I am happy to discuss that. 86.88.105.173 (talk) 07:26, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- Respectfully disagree. Kindly go through the page history to see who is the editor responsible for the inclusion. And as I said again, the links are under WP:ELYES and WP:ELMAYBE. I just reverted your removal under those guidelines. Thanks. The Herald (Benison) (talk)`
- According to the page history, you are the editor who is responsible for the inclusion of those links because you reverted me after I got rid of 'em. Hope we can agree on that ;-) You mention ELYES and ELMAYBE but have you read ELMIN? And "Links in the "External links" section should be kept to a minimum."? Please start a new topic over at Talk:Miami_Vice_(film) and explain which links you think should be kept and why. You shouldn't have reverted because you are ignoring a very important part of the page you link to. 86.88.105.173 (talk) 07:38, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- Sure, WP:ELMIN is there. But kindly go through Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Film#External_links also and understand why a movie title is allowed to have such external links, as this page is under WikiProject Film. Thanks :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by The Herald (talk • contribs)

Unsurprisingly that is just one dude in 2009 being bold. He can't override consensus. 12
Do you want to include an external link to an website about a camera? https://web.archive.org/web/20100325191221/http://www.grassvalley.com/products/viper
Linking to the script is probably copyright infringement so I won't repeat that link here, but do you think that is a good idea?
Do you really want to have a random list of "Articles" with 50% 404s as a subheading of the External links section?
If we would want to link to websites like IMDb, AllMovie, Box Office Mojo and the Internet Movie Cars Database (which is a bad idea because Wikipedia is not intended to promote their websites) we should be using a nice template for that.
But I do not really see the point of linking to IMDb and AllMovie and the Internet Movie Cars Database because we can't even use them as sources because their content is usergenerated and full of errors (see WP:IMDB & WP:ALLMUSIC) 86.88.105.173 (talk) 08:12, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- Nevertheless, MoS guidelines are to be followed, so you can go ahead a remove the urls you find that do not come under the guidelines. But the whole section, especially when they are linked to the sister projects, IMDB snd others (even though not exactly reliable, still is added in MoS. Thanks. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 08:16, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- WP:EL is to be followed, and has wide consensus. That one user does not and cannot overrule WP:EL. But I would not be surprised if that is moot because I would not be surprised if you agree with most of the removals except perhaps IMDb, AllMovie, Box Office Mojo and the Internet Movie Cars Database. Is that correct? Which links do you think are worth keeping? 86.88.105.173 (talk) 08:22, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- I've made the changes. Thanks. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 08:46, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you, that is a step in the right direction! Have you seen WP:CONLEVEL? Quote: "Consensus among a limited group of editors, at one place and time, cannot override community consensus on a wider scale. For instance, unless they can convince the broader community that such action is right, participants in a WikiProject cannot decide that some generally accepted policy or guideline does not apply to articles within its scope." And WP:NOCON? Quote: "In disputes over external links, disputed links are removed unless and until there is a consensus to include them.". I hope you can forgive me for getting rid of the links to the articles; if someone wants to read an article about a movie they can use Google. Is there something in those (rather boring) articles that we really should include in the Wikipedia article? Is this an acceptable solution for you? 86.88.105.173 (talk) 11:56, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- For me, so far, those links meet the notability criteria and verifiable ref criteria. There is no redundancy or other issues. They all comply with the WP:EL policies and guidelines. So IMO, they should stand. If you feel otherwise, you may remove them, after stating proper reason why it shouldn't be there. Thanks. Happy editing :) The Herald (Benison) (talk) 13:32, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- I have already; more than once. I am not sure what you mean with "those links meet the notability criteria and verifiable ref criteria". Notability is whether a given topic warrants its own article. Verifiability means that other people using the encyclopedia can check that the information on Wikipedia comes from a reliable source. Neither applies to an external link. 86.88.105.173 (talk) 17:09, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
- I'll address the issue, if it still persists, this weekend. Real life caught up. In the meantime, feel free to revert the changes, with adequate summaries. Again, I am only adhering to the WP:EL guidelines and made the changes I felt was necessary. If you are still adamant about the removal of the entire section, feel free to do the same. Thanks. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 20:29, 19 July 2023 (UTC)

Edit on Cerulean
Hi you sent me a message to say my edit was a test but I don’t understand what you mean by that? There is an aberration (morphological difference within a species) on the Small Copper butterfly which has small blue spots on the wings. It is called ab.caerulescens and the word is derived from Cerulean blue. This is the first time I’ve attempted to edit anything on Wikipedia so apologies if I’ve done it incorrectly! Graham 2A00:8B43:9BA:0:5562:BAB:CDAF:7D66 (talk) 21:28, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi
Hello my friend! I am an editor of the (Arabic) Wikipedia, and there is an article that should be created on the English Wikipedia. It is about a singer named Kxllswxtch (abbreviated as KXL). The page should be created to link it to the rest of the pages and to the Arabic language page. my regards Linkaomy (talk) 11:22, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
- Hi. You can create an article and submit on AfC and wait for the review. Or alternatively, you can use your sandbox for making an article. Kindly make sure it meets notability criteria and you provide enough reliable sources for verification. You can use this page for further information how to create an article. Also adhere to these policies. Thank you. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 12:21, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

The article St. Basil's School has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Only primary sources provided. No independent coverage to meet WP:NSCHOOL.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:01, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
New page reviewer granted
Hi The Herald. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers
" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:
- Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
- You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
- If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
- Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Steps such as checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline are mandatory and will take a few minutes per article.
- Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any required steps.
- Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. Courcelles (talk) 16:39, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
FP Revision
What I have done wrong? - Stefan, 23:07 04-Aug-2023 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.1.20.0 (talk) 21:19, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

- IMO, it's still redundant. @Dgpop: Comments? The Herald (Benison) (talk) 16:48, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- Originally I thought the added help link was the same as the one on the Interactive FP page. The latter doesn't exist and isn't archived, but the added help link isn't directly related to Interactive FP; it's a general help sheet for the language. Perhaps it would be be better as a top-level external link called "FP help sheet". Dgpop (talk) 15:57, 6 August 2023 (UTC)

ST FRANCIS COLLEGE PAGE
Hey Beninson, I am Harvici, a student at St. Francis College. It looks like I provided reasonable sources, like the official website of the college, and there is no need to remove the entire section of the page. If you want to chat with me you can at my talk page. Harvici (talk) 12:51, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, welcome to Wikipedia. Looks like you have provided the school website itself as the source of information, and the article relies heavily on that primary and single source. Kindly refer to WP:PRIMARY and WP:RS to understand the editing policies. Also, you need to provide various third party reliable sources for verification of the information. Thank you and happy editing. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 12:58, 4 September 2023 (UTC)
- As WP:RS states, "reliable sources may be published materials with a reliable publication process, authors who are regarded as authoritative in relation to the subject, or both. These qualifications should be demonstrable to other people." The official college website should be considered an authoritative source in relation to the subject matter of the school. With all due respect, for your clarification, I would insist that you go through the college website and see the details mentioned in the About Us section. Since the college isn't that famous, its history cannot be verified by any other source. So, finding any other source on the Internet is an impossible task. Harvici (talk) 13:36, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
- If that's so, then it fails the notability criteria. We need further citations for verification and if there is aren't any, then it's not possible to establish the notability. Refer Wikipedia:ONESOURCE for more idea. Thanks and happy editing. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 14:07, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

Removal of Isle of Man level crossing
Why did you remove my Isle of Man level crossing? The crossings information are from youtube videos, google images, google street view and the wikipedia articles Level crossings in the United Kingdom. The sideways signal information is from the equipment section, warning lights. The sentence says:
In some cases a now non-standard traffic light type was fitted (still seen at Marshbrook, Minffordd and on the Isle of Man), consisting of the individual lights arranged vertically in a red–amber–red arrangement.

New pages patrol newsletter
Hello Benison,
Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!
October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.
PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.
Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.
Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

- Hi. The article is cited, but per Wikipedia:Notability, you need multiple independent sources for verifiability. Around 10 would suffice IMO. More citations from reliable sources can help your cause. Also, kindly keep in mind the paraphrasing. Thanks. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 05:02, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

hey, you just reverted my edit to blowjob. At the moment it just directs to fellatio a slang definition. It should have its own page as the origins of the word blowjob dating to the 1950's or earlier are very different to the latin for fellatio.
There are many supporting references and my edits are just a start. Please do not block me for vandalism. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.168.185.43 (talk) 17:02, 8 October 2023 (UTC)
- Kindly consider WP:AFC for the creation of new article. Currently, replacing the redirect page with content that is not properly cited constitute as vandalism. Thanks. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 17:17, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

Ayodhya dispute
There are some {{convert}} errors at Ayodhya dispute due to your recent script-assisted edits. Please check what you intended and fix where the wikitext refers to $2 and $3 and possibly other problems. Johnuniq (talk) 00:00, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, sure thing. Thanks a lot. Looks like the script is doing it a lot now. I'm cross check my edits once again. Thank you. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 09:49, 11 October 2023 (UTC)
Question about notability and draft page rejection
Hi there, I was hoping you would help me out by sharing your specific concern/s with this draft article you declined recently: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Draft:Decriminalize_Sex_Work It's only the second page I've created, so I would really appreciate your help as I improve my Wikipedia skillset. I figured since the subject was referenced recently in the Washington Post as well as half a dozen other publications including the NYT over a 4 year period, that it was notable enough for a page. I've read the full Wiki:Notability page and my best guess is that maybe one of the major publications needs to be specifically 'about' the subject rather than just using the subject as a source and explaining what its mission is. If that is the case then I guess I just have to wait until that happens, but if the concern is something else, I'd hate to just wait around when I could actually improve the page and fix the issue. For example, if the problem is that there are not enough citations, then I could easily dig up another dozen articles to include, but nothing like the NYT of course. In any case, thank you in advance for any additional details you can offer about your concerns. Best - Chaotikgood (talk) 00:33, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
- User:The Herald/AfC Essentialities might throw some light on the reasons for declining the draft. If you could add more reliable independent citations, then it might come under mainspace worthy draft and then you can resubmit it. Also give WP:MOS a go to see the manual of style we use here. Thanks and happy editing. The Herald (Benison) (talk) 12:59, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

November Articles for creation backlog drive
Hello The Herald:
WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.
You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.
Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.
Incomplete reversion
FYI, this edit only reverted the IPv6 editor's attempt to remove vandalism introduced in the preceding IPv4 edit, with the unfortunate effect of restoring the vandal edit. Please be careful. --Paul_012 (talk) 01:52, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
