Auto Archive

I started using the auto archive a few months ago, it is make life far easier as I do not have to worry about the talk page getting too unweildy now. More details at User:Werdnabot/Archiver/Howto. --Stewart (talk) 20:56, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll look into that. Signalhead 21:32, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

List of space simulation games has been updated, thanks so much for helping make my lil list more professional looking, I really appreciate that. I am new to wikipedia, this is my very first article, I really love 3d space combat simulation games and simulation games in general and I need all the help I can get. If there is a major change that you feel is needed, please discuss it on my talk page of the article and I will get to it as soon as possible. Or if you can make the change, please feel free. Again, thanks so much. I love wikipedia. Kirihari 04:38, 6 April 2008 (EST)

User EA210269 spelling mistakes

Sorry Signalhead about all my spelling mistakes, believe me, mate, I'm doing my best! It looks a litle like you got a permanent job there but its not that easy when English is only your second language. Anyway, I watch and learn! Thanks for your help, hope you are not to frustrated, Merry Christmas, EA210269 (talk) 12:09, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Hey, it's no trouble at all... Frohe Weihnachten! Signalhead (talk) 18:31, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

This new user has recently made a series of small incorrect edits to UK railway station articles in the style of User:Farlack913. One and the same user, perhaps? Worth keeping an eye on. Signalhead (talk) 19:24, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

Ta - will do. --Stewart (talk) 19:27, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

I will bow to your greater knowledge as I cannot currently find any pictures of the pier platforms. However I am sure the pictures I have seen illustrated two. I am sure that they were electrified as well. There could be something going back to electrification days. --Stewart (talk) 23:21, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

I was going on the basis of a layout diagram from the 1960 re-signalling. It shows one platform on the pier, with sidings adjacent. It's quite possible that there was another platform at some time prior to 1960, but it's difficult to imagine where it would have been. Signalhead (talk) 23:35, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Looking at the initial edits by this user (and the user added comment on the talk page), has User:Farlack913 (talk / contribs), alias User:ScotRail421 (talk / contribs) reappeared under a different name. --Stewart (talk) 14:57, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

That's him all right. No doubt about it. Signalhead (talk) 22:12, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Have a look at User:Fila3466757 (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs), recent language on the talk page makes believe that this user is not what Wikipedia wants. --Stewart (talk) 16:50, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

That is well out of order. I think I may have found yet another one of his new accounts: User:FA53764968566fgtu7757 (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) Signalhead (talk) 23:53, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

Following the enquiry by an Admin (User:John) he has admitted it - see this. --Stewart (talk) 18:14, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Well, there's a surprise. Signalhead (talk) 18:29, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
Had a response from Dave souza. When our friend starts up again I suggest we follow the advice from David and attempt to get a solid set of evidence. --Stewart (talk) 13:44, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
The main issue with this guy is his unhelpful edits. Although he has used multiple accounts, there is no evidence of actual sock puppety, i.e. he has never pretended to be someone else in support of his own arguments or anything like that. He seems to abandon his previous account whenever he starts a new one. I think he may be creating new accounts just to disassociate himself from the negative comments and warnings on his talk pages and make a clean start. If it can be argued that he has abused this privilege, he may be in breach of policy for trying to avoid scrutiny. Signalhead (talk) 14:39, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
This evening's edit to his talk page gave me the prod to raise a Sockpuppetry page, mainly based on the clean start and avoiding scrutiny itme you pointed out above. See Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Fila3466757 for the information lodged. --Stewart (talk) 22:15, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
Very well done assembling all that evidence. Signalhead (talk) 22:45, 6 January 2008 (UTC)
He editted a talk page of a previous one of his sockpuppets that was active earlier this year this evening, and as a result I also found another account that contained similar edits. Not sure where this user will go next. The fustrating thing is that I think there are makings of a good editor here if only the wayward edits could be put under control. --Stewart (talk) 22:02, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

You know, I have a sneaking suspicion that User:Greenock125 (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) might be yet another account of our friend 'Farlack'. Consider the evidence:

  1. Username ends with a number.
  2. Obviously based in Scotland.
  3. Obsessed with providing photographs for railway station articles / gets angry when such photographs are removed.
  4. Failure to use the 'preview' button.
  5. Messes up templates.
  6. Blanks or doesn't respond to warnings on talk page.

User:Rydo12345678 (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) could be him as well. Signalhead (talk) 15:36, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Not sure about Greenock125, the pattern of editting to my mind appears to immature and does not take sufficient care. The anger is not as abusive as Farlack et al. As for Rydo12345678 I do agree, maybe you would like to add his details to the sockpuppet page. --Stewart (talk) 16:42, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
See you have added another user to the list. User:FA53764968566fgtu7757 was blocked earlier today for an unrelated reason (user name). --Stewart (talk) 21:38, 19 January 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I added Rydo12345678 as per your suggestion above. If I get a moment, I'll put some evidence together. Signalhead (talk) 15:11, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
Sockpuppets have been given an indefinite block, whilst User:Fila3466757 has been a short block. Not all the User ID were deemed to sockpuppets. --Stewart (talk) 19:00, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
So I see. What's to stop this guy getting around the block by just creating yet another new account, I wonder? Anyhow, it's a result. Signalhead (talk) 19:03, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Good point about the other language in the infobox. Do not know the answer but I do recall this being discussed previously.

User:Halowithhorns89 (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) is working his way through stations it what appears to be alphabetical order adding significant info to the infoboxes. There is also the adding of info that is not defined (line info) in the template and reordering away from the order in the box (events moved above usage) for some unexplained reason. --Stewart (talk) 22:00, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

The Gaelic name issue came up at Cambuslang railway station about a year ago. Also, somebody tried to include the Gaelic for 'Glasgow' at Glasgow Queen Street, although the Gaelic signs there only have the translation of 'Queen Street'. I'm strongly of the opinion that the infobox name should always reflect what's on the signs themselves. Signalhead (talk) 23:22, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Kyle of Lochalsh

Hi, can I ask where your information for two platforms at Kyle of Lochalsh comes from? As far as I recall, there is only the one, which is clear from the photo. I'll check the Quail track diagram tomorrow, but I can't think where there is a second platform. – Tivedshambo (talk) 18:32, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Having said that, I've just looked at some of the other photos I took at the time, and there may be a second track on the other side of the building - I presume this is what you're referring to. Is this actually in use, or is it just a disused siding? – Tivedshambo (talk) 18:37, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
There are usable platforms on either side of the station building (Quail will confirm). Signalhead (talk) 18:45, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
Didn't have a chance to look at Quail today, but the sectional appendix shows two. Funny - I could have sworn there was only one. My apologies for reverting you in November without querying it. – Tivedshambo (talk) 20:06, 22 January 2008 (UTC)

Can you have another look at the page. We were editting at the same time, and I messed up the intial change. Feel free to sort out any bits I have messed up. --Stewart (talk) 12:53, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

I think we should watch over the next few days and see how things develop, and then decide how to proceed. --Stewart (talk) 21:24, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
Indeed. Looks like another sockpuppetry report is in order already. Meanwhile, he's left quite a mess at various articles over the last two days that needs sorting out. <Sigh> Signalhead (talk) 21:26, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
I will let you have the priviledge(??? ;-) ) of lodging the report this time. --Stewart (talk) 21:53, 3 February 2008 (UTC)
A new sockpuppetry case has been opened here. Signalhead (talk) 21:48, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Thank you - but where will he turn up next? --Stewart (talk) 21:51, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
I was collating a longer diff list when you edit came through. I think a checkuser will settle this. --Stewart (talk) 22:04, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
A result - looking at the block log, the IP has been given a 24 hour block on creation new accounts. We will need to keep alert to see what happens next. --Stewart (talk) 21:52, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
I expect he'll be back soon enough. Will keep my eyes open. Signalhead (talk) 23:38, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Ta for the copyedit - our friend User:Greenock125 had directly copied the captions from Geograph and I had made an attempt at tidying up the page and removing some POV (possibly from the Geograph pictures). I was under the impression that the inquiry was inconclusive regarding brake failure. --Stewart (talk) 22:45, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Ah, so that's where he's getting this stuff from. You've probably noticed the message I've left on his talk page. Signalhead (talk) 22:48, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
I also noticed that with Largs (and Saltcoats) he is deleting existing images in favour of the one he has found on Geograph. I noticed this first with Largs when he deleted the image I had uploaded (and taken) in April 1984. --Stewart (talk) 23:00, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Our friend is back - see Fila943 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · page moves · block user · block log). --Stewart (talk) 06:35, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Pffffffffffff. Fila943 (talk) 06:52, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Looks like we hit a nerve. --Stewart (talk) 12:36, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
I see he's earned himself a 48 hour block. Signalhead (talk) 15:22, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Have a look at the response from Dave at User talk:Dave souza#User:Fila934 (aka_User:Fila3466757). Another WP:SSP is in order, and Dave will look into it regarding an extension to the block. However, where will he appear next? --Stewart (talk) 15:32, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
A result. --Stewart (talk) 17:49, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
Nice. Signalhead (talk) 21:02, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

You might wish to look at Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Fila7345‎. --Stewart (talk) 18:33, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

I have done. I've just seen the trail of carnage left by this user. Signalhead (talk) 18:35, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
User:Dave souza has obilged and blocked him. --Stewart (talk) 19:03, 15 February 2008 (UTC)
Excellent. Signalhead (talk) 19:04, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

This user has appeared to have created a new account this evening User:RyanGallacher. Reasonably easy to work out as he used the same name when uploading pictures around Christmas and directly copied a large Geograph caption into Inverkeithing railway station. This user is not the same as our old friend Fila/Farlack. I think they deserve gentle coaching and encouragement to continue the good work and continue to improve the quality of their submissions. --Stewart (talk) 22:49, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Interesting. I also spotted a couple of his/her edits as User:81.104.128.143. This user shows some potential, but just needs to take a little bit more care, and stop ignoring messages on his talk page. Let's see how it goes. Signalhead (talk) 23:13, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
Ryan has now appeared as User:Greenock999. --Stewart (talk) 13:21, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

With your cast iron interrupter, does it shatter so that it is good for only one use, or what? Tabletop (talk) 03:57, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

When the top part of the casting is struck by a wheel flange it snaps off, so the whole thing has to be replaced. Signalhead (talk) 07:29, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Kirkcaldy Railway Station work

just to let you know, i plan to soon add some info to the Kirkcaldy Railway Station article, but i'm wondering since you are a member of the wikipedia transport group, if you can advise me on anything.

such info includes the actual date the station opened to the public, a major re-fit of the station at the end of the 19th century, station re-build in the mid-60s and south platform replacement in the early 1990s, after suffering the aftermath of a fire. this might also include a picture or two, if i can find them.

p.s. i always wanted to know why my previous picture was deleted? it's just because i'm a bit concerned about my replacement picture, if it will be safe on the article Kilnburn (talk) 22:02, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

I have no historical information on Kirkcaldy station.
I don't know why your picture was deleted, but I imagine it's because it wasn't properly licensed. –Signalhead < T > 18:29, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi - I see you've been replacing redirects in articles, such as here. The guideline is to leave these in place - see Do not "fix" links to redirects that are not broken. —  Tivedshambo  (t/c) 05:59, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi mate! I'm not experienced enough on how to edit pages but I know that you've been edited page about Bizarro. So last time I checked this page instead of normal picture in box which located on the right side of the page (blue box) I saw some spam picture linking to some crap outside. I checked the code but could not find a way how to fix it. So if you have time check this page and fix it if you can. If at the time you come to the page and things were OK, so maybe some one has already fix it, so just know I wasn't joking at you ))))

I can't see anything wrong with the 'blue box', and nothing in the article's (or the picture's) edit history suggests that it was changed recently. –Signalhead < T > 20:51, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

Summerside, Prince Edward Island

Hello, I noticed you changed the population of Summerside, PEI on its site. Thanks for bringing it up to date, however, you entered a comma, which is unnecessary (it formats automatically) and the word "(estimated)" written in brackets. As the functions on the page are looking for numerical data, the population density would not display properly. Just a heads up for future reference! Benwedge (talk) 20:49, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Eachother

I can see you're hot on your grammar and spelling - and you seem particularly offended by using eachother as one word - but I want to plant a thought in your mind. I'm not going to dispute that the dictionaries go with each other as two words (for the moment) but the logic is that eachother should be treated as one word with a specific meaning just like another which of course used to be an other. The form eachother has been in use for hundreds of years as a variant and its use is growing. Increasing numbers of people use eachother deliberately despite knowing what it says in the dictionary - and I'm one of those people. In my view the single word will replace the two word form. I'm not going to change your alteration to my text but I just wanted you to know that there are people who use it not from ignorance but because they believe it to be a more intelligible form. Newsnightmeirion (talk) 19:08, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I would have to say that to deliberately use non-standard English in Wikipedia is frankly wrong and you shouldn't do it. I acknowledge that English evolves over time but you shouldn't try to influence change by deliberately using incorrect English in Wikipedia. I wouldn't knowingly amend the spelling of a word where an acceptable alternative had been used but that isn't the case with 'eachother'. I have just referenced three on-line dictionaries, none of which recognises 'eachother' at all, not even as a variation. The two spellcheckers I tried don't accept it either. If and when this word appears in dictionaries I will leave it be, but until then you should expect any non-standard English usage in Wikipedia to be treated as an error and that someone will come along and correct it! I agree that the joining of commonly-paired words to form one word is growing, but that is only to be expected as the standard of written English is generally plummeting. In the vast majority of cases, it is just down to ignorance; you are obviously a rare exception! –Signalhead < T > 20:16, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

This guy is out of control. –Signalhead < T > 14:17, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

I really get annoyed by wholesale copying from Geograph, especially when the new images are not as good as the existing ones. I am currently away relying on dialup (slow) or mobile phone (expensive) connections. Will have a look when I get onto a broadband link. --Stewart (talk) 16:38, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
Tackled two articles and adding comments on the users talk page. There is quite a lot of work involved in tidying up these articles. And then there is the images not being on commons, and lack of use of the Geograph recommended text. --Stewart (talk) 19:40, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
What bugs me is that he doesn't respond to or take on board any comments left on his talk page. He just ploughs on oblivious to Wikipedia policy and style. I feel that admin intervention is needed. –Signalhead < T > 19:59, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
He has deleted comments I posted on his talk page, and then moved the image in the Morar railway station article back into a gallery, ignoring totally what had been done to incorporate the image into the article. I have reverted the edit. The comment on his talk page I have re-added and expanded. The admin I have refered this to is Dave Souza as he is has previous helped with the Fila / Farlack issue. --Stewart (talk) 21:12, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
