Hi, I would like to include a source on LGBTQIA history. In Queering The Stage, I document historically researched and accurate descriptions of queer heroes who were persecuted through sodomy laws. People like Michael Hardwick and Arnald De Verholha. Where do I put that reference? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mr.teacher.jack (talkcontribs) 20:17, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

[edit]

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

  • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
  • Diversity winner
  • Gender-gap fillers

For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Erika Ervin birthday

[edit]

I have corroborating evidence that her birthday is August 6, 1967. Her "out" date to being female is February 23,1879. She is 52 years old. Where do I send my evidence? I have video with her stating it's her birthday as well as printed evidence. Why is it so hard to document this stuff? Mykidsbowl (talk) 18:20, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Mykidsbowl: Hi, both sources used in the articles states something else, but if you have reliable source (see here) then please add it to the article. Shellwood (talk) 19:48, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Correctness

[edit]

I'm done trying to correct this error. There's a YouTube video from her birthday 3 years ago where she herself says it's her birthday. There is also statements on her Facebook she made stating August 6. LGBTQ people appear to want to use their "out" date as a birthday of sorts. Its ridiculous. It's not their biological birthday. Wikipedia doesn't care about being correct apparently. Mykidsbowl (talk) 20:15, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Mykidsbowl: Actually Wikipedia takes this very seriously, unsourced information about living persons can be removed at any time by anoyone. And again, the burden lies on you to provide a source that supports your claim, you cant just add material to an article just because you saw something on youtube, you need to provide a reference. Shellwood (talk) 06:56, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Documentation

[edit]

She is living with my best friend. I can give you documents from her Facebook page and YouTube that prove her age. My best friend confirmed it. Why she lies about it I dont know. I have asked three times where to upload my documentation to. I contacted the article author that is your source for your incorrect information. She can't back up her information. She only went with the lie Erika told her. So your basis for this incorrect birthday is a lie told by Erika before she was comfortable to tell the truth. Let's get this corrected shall we? Mykidsbowl (talk) 07:14, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Mykidsbowl: This is an encyclopedia and we can't use information based on personal anecdotes. I see that other users have told you the same before, add a proper reliable source if you have any and follow the instructions in the link above that I gave you. And if you have any trouble with the current dates then take it to the article's talk page, it is much better to keep the discussion there. Shellwood (talk) 07:56, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

My attempt to add content to lfny alumni page

Shellwood I would like to ask if you just erased the content that I added to lycee francais de ny wikipedia alumni page. This is my 3rd attempt to fo so. Shellwood, Your response is incomprehensible. I am an alumna of Lycee Francais de New York with notable achievements. I am trying to add an entry to the distinguished alumni section of the lfny wikipedia site. What do you mean by saying the subject I am trying to add does not have an article?? Catherinetabory (talk) 00:24, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Shellwood may I ask if you have the authority to decide what content can appear under notable alumni of lycee francais de newyork. Catherinetabory (talk) 00:27, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If this is just a matter of following some process to add content, then pray let me know how to.do it instead of erasing my entries one after the other. Catherinetabory (talk) 00:29, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I want to let you know that Shellwood, or any other user does not have authority of any changes you make on the article because no one owns any of the content on Wikipedia, and no one has more authority than another, they do however, need to make sure that the rules of Wikipedia are being followed, we are not discouraging you here, What we are trying to tell you is that all content added to Wikipedia must cite a Reliable Source and be written in a Neutral point of view. Thanks :-) Thegooduser Life Begins With a Smile :) 🍁 00:48, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Catherinetabory: There is no article about Dr. Catherine-Marguerite Tabory Shalen on Wikipedia hence she will not be included, simple logic. We dont add people to categories unless they already have articles about them and we dont add material about a specific person on a category page like you did. If you feel that Catherine is notable enough and meets the criteria why not create an article about her instead? Shellwood (talk) 13:49, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ok an entry will be created. Why did you not explain that in the first place? Telling me there is no article just did not communicate the point at all. I thi k that wikipedia editors and watchdogs should communicate in a clear manner!!! Catherinetabory (talk) 17:02, 18 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Catherinetabory: I told you that the subject lacked an article and therefore should not be added, please see my edit summary and my first answer above. New Page Review newsletter November 2019

[edit]

Hello Shellwood,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 803 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

So after an IP objected to text in They, *they* left a mess: "the] [|third-person]]". So then Craigslistboy222 tried to fix part of that mess: "the] [[third-person]]". Then you reverted the fix. ArbCom 2019 election voter message

[edit]
Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:08, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

[edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Continued (though infrequent) bad edits by User:161.132.120.10 ...

[edit]

... since 21 May 2019 when you (the last after months of others) posted a warning on their talk page that further vandalism might be followed by a block.

At 15:01, 25 June 2019 they edited Chimpanzee to say, inter alia, that the species comes from "the costal regions of peru" rather than "the forests and savannahs of tropical Africa."

At 16:05, 10 December 2019 they edited Runes to change a wikiversity template from linking to an existing article ("Rune Yoga") to a nonexistent article ("Rune Yoda"), meanwhile omitting the final bracket so the template became nonfunctional in any case.

Both edits have been reverted by other people (the latter by me). However, no further warnings have been posted to that talk page, presumably because neither reverter was an administrator (at least I am not). I think by now sufficient warnings have been given, and some action would be justified. May I leave this in your hands? – Raven  .talk 00:08, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@.Raven: Hi, you dont have to be an administrator to leave warnings on user talk pages. The problem with IPs are that you can't be sure of who or how many people that are behind them and in this case the edits are sporadic and span over several months. At this point there is no need to take action against them and they haven't made any edits during the past 2 days. It would have been a completely different matter had this been a registered user and a block would certainly have been justified in that case as I can't see any constructive editing at all among their contributions. Shellwood (talk) 20:49, 12 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

hey, i'm confused about your message

sorry to bother you but I see i got a message from you about correcting an edit i've done in the anne of green gables page(screenshot if you care: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vvd3Fw3Q3xBsN5qlPK8Neu1oiiMtYScU/view?usp=sharing. The confusing part is that i've never actually done a single edit in my life and before you ask,i am the only person on the ip. The weirder part sill is that this is actually a new network that has only been active since last month, and the edit is from january so that's pretty imposible. I dont know if this is important in any way just wanted to tell you about it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.138.33.241 (talk) 13:56, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 178.138.33.241 and thanks for explaining this. The edit from January was unconstructive so the warning was warranted, however if that wasn't you, you need not to take this into much consideration and you are always free to remove warnings from that page. If you wish to make edits in the future I really recommend creating an account here. This isn't the first time this happens and sure won't be the last either when using Wikipedia from a new IP. Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

[edit]

Hello Shellwood,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

The 2019 Cure Award
In 2019 you were one of the top ~300 medical editors across any language of Wikipedia. Thank you from Wiki Project Med for helping bring free, complete, accurate, up-to-date health information to the public. We really appreciate you and the vital work you do! Wiki Project Med Foundation is a thematic organization whose mission is to improve our health content. Consider joining here, there are no associated costs.

Thanks again :-) -- Doc James along with the rest of the team at Wiki Project Med Foundation 18:35, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Doc James: Thanks Doc! But does this award really hold some validity? If it is meant too messure quantitative edits then sure yes, I guess I have reverted a lot of vandalism on articles related to medicine. But qualitative speaking I have zero, I can't tell the difference between a kidney and a liver during an autopsy. And I will just assume that there are editors among the top 300 who are in the same position as me. Which brings up the attention of qualitative vs quantitative contributions. Shellwood (talk) 19:48, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Reverting vandalism is key to keeping our content accurate and reliable. Yes this just looks at edit counts to articles tagged by WPMED... Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 19:53, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Smash!

You've been squished by a whale!
Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know you did something really silly.

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.
