WikiCup 2013 February newsletter

Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.

Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:

  1. Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
  2. London Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
  3. New South Wales Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Alaska Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.

Other contributors of note include:

Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by British Empire The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...

March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!

A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. GridON

Hey there,

You just rejected the gridon article submission claiming its an advertisement. Since the last rejection, the article has been updated to be solely informative with no advertising type hints. This was done using live advice from wikipedia experts. Why did you reject? What do you want me to change to solve this issue? Keep in mind everything is backed by reliable and independent sources. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.54.249.240 (talk) 12:17, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

My mistake. I rejected your article by thinking a article that I was reviewing. But sad I haven't found the other article. I lost that.--Pratyya (Hello!) 12

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

your review of my reviews for AfC

  • Timeline for Pirates of the Caribbean

I declined this as needing sources because the only valid sources were for historical events. There are apparently also references to two articles that try to estimate the date of the events in the films but that is conjecture. Also the article mixed real events with fictional in a way that did not distinguish them.

  • Samantha Fish

This article had been modified and resubmitted well after the other copy had been declined.

  • Asylum Entertainment

Read like a very promotional article before I ran a check and found that text had been copied from their webstie and removed it. I beleive I declined it with reason of adv before going and checking for copyright issues and didn't change it, so this one I might have messed up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hal9000w (talkcontribs) 00:57, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:BPL2012 chamions.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:BPL2012 chamions.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Psychonaut (talk) 09:39, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Y media labs

examples of promotional/advert language highlighted with bold/italic marks

Y Media Labs (pronounced “y-media-labs”) is a holistic (define) mobile application development company headquartered in San Francisco, US. It is founded and managed by Stanford and Harvard alum who had been part of various acquisitions in the past (vague, unsourced, implies professional expertise w/o spelling it out). The firm also has its presence (vague) in New York, US and Bangalore, India. Established in 2009. It's main goal (main product) is to help people and business realize their mobile potential (what does their product do). Also to provide end-to-end solutions (businessspeak) in mobile app development. It created a niche in the industry with specialization to understand, develop, deliver and deploy (develop will do) mobile applications across all major platforms (are they) including Apple iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch), RIM BlackBerry, Google Android, Microsoft Windows Mobile and Symbian (provide sources for each). Y Media Labs takes pride in creating app for some of the major brands in the world (we dont care, most businesses are assumed to be proud of their work). Their app Intro to Letters got feature in Apple commercial and lately their app for Lonely Planet got featured in iPhone 5 commercial.

Achievements

It's major releases have been featured in Top 20 apps in app store.(source) In Apple's national TV commercials more than once and had been chosen as best apps of 2010 by Apple. It has also been ranked as the No.1 iOS development firm in US by various agencies. It was named the Best iPhone Development Company for the month of November 2012 by sourcingline.com[1][2] It has a place in the Best Web Design Agencies's directory.[3] There're some other achievements down here.

  • ADD SOURCES*
  • Featured in Apple Commercial for an app Intro to Letters
  • Featured in iPhone 5 Commercial for an app Lonely Planet
  • Ranked No1 in App Development House by Bestwebdesignagencies
  • Ranked No2 in App Development by Sourcingline
  • Featured in "This Week in iPad"
  • Featured in CNBC for WDC - Apple
  • Featured in Best App Ever Awards for an App - Nom Nom Paleo

If you didnt notice this content was blatantly promotional, go back and read a featured article on any business, see how often "pride" and "holistic" show up.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 01:02, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Australian cricket team in Bangladesh in 2011-12 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to an article talk page, image description page, image talk page, mediawiki page, mediawiki talk page, category talk page, portal talk page, template talk page, help talk, user page, or user talk page from the article space.

If you think that your page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. DASHBot (talk) 12:16, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

Landstown Commons

Thank you Pratyya for reviewing my page about Landstown Commons shopping center in Virginia Beach. I completed development of this project myself - I don't know what other reliable sources are needed in a case like this. My Linkedin profile at www.linkedin.com/in/jimcarr27/ shows that I did develop the center. If I can send some additional information - signed documents, etc. - I am happy to do so.

Please reconsider your rejection and allow the posting of this project. It was a major change event for the city and people will want to know about it in the future. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Primespot (talkcontribs) 13:38, 9 March 2013 (UTC)

'Bold text' Southwaleslady (talk) 03:36, 13 March 2013 (UTC)Hello. Can you help with these questions? The material I used for the article were primary sources, Queensland government official electricity supply industry documents including annual reports and reports from directors/managers of the regional electricity boards. These official documents are available at the public archives of Queensland State Archives, State Library of Queensland (John Oxley Library) and Queensland Energy Museum (currently located at Highfields Pioneer Village near Toowoomba in Queensland). I am the Director of Queensland Energy Museum and wrote the book, Switched-on Queensland, which has the chapter on Toowoomba Electric Light and Power Company. To gain publication of the article, how can I address the issues of non-relevant material when these are publically available official Queensland Government documents? How do I reference the material? Hope you can advise. Thank you for reveiwing the draft, Southwaleslady Southwaleslady (talk) 03:36, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Your English is terrible!

How can you claim that you're a native English speaker? With all due respect, I request you to change that Babel box to "This user can contribute with an intermediate level of English" instead. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.98.119.199 (talk) 15:37, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

With due respect I'm asking what makes you think that my English is terrible?--Pratyya (Hello!) 15:45, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Hi Pratyya, I concur with the IP about the English. However, I don't think it's so bad that it's "terrible". Just that you make some errors here and there only. Also, it can be forgiven as I think your country speaks mainly Bengali. That's all. Arctic Kangaroo 16:09, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
I'm sorry if I offended anyone, I didn't really mean to... It's just that I couldn't bear the fact that you were claiming to be a native English speaker. I agree with Arctic Kangaroo; I was somewhat exaggerating when I said your English is "terrible", but it's not good enough to allow you to claim that you're a native English speaker either. If you're not good at English, accept it and nobody will bother you. At least don't overclaim it. When you do, it really annoys some people (like me). If I'm still disagreed with on this, I can point out a few obvious errors in the description on your user page (before you go and correct them). Again, no offense intended. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.245.112.33 (talk) 04:58, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
It's me again. My ISP keeps changing my IP address, so don't get baffled. The first and the last comments (excluding this one) on this topic were made by me, although the IP addresses don't match. I know I'll be asked to create an account on Wikipedia to avoid such confusion. I'll soon do it, but not just yet. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.245.112.33 (talk) 05:08, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 March newsletter

We are halfway through round two. Pool A sees the strongest competition, with five out of eight of its competitors scoring over 100, and Pool H is lagging, with half of its competitors yet to score. WikiCup veterans lead overall; Pool A's Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (2010's winner) leads overall, with poolmate London Miyagawa (submissions) (a finalist in 2011 and 2012) not far behind. Pool F's New South Wales Casliber (submissions) (a finalist in 2010, 2011 and 2012) is in third. The top two scorers in each pool, as well as the next highest 16 scorers overall, will progress to round three at the end of April.

Today has seen a number of Easter-themed did you knows from WikiCup participants, and March has seen collaboration from contestants with WikiWomen's History Month. It's great to see the WikiCup being used as a locus of collaboration; if you know of any collaborative efforts going on, or want to start anything up, please feel free to use the WikiCup talk page to help find interested editors. As well as fostering collaboration, we're also seeing the Cup encouraging the improvement of high-importance articles through the bonus point system. Highlights from the last month include GAs on physicist Niels Bohr (Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)), on the European hare (Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions)), on the constellation Circinus (Alaska Keilana (submissions) and New South Wales Casliber (submissions)) and on the Third Epistle of John (Indiana Cerebellum (submissions)). All of these subjects were covered on at least 50 Wikipedias at the beginning of the year and, subsequently, each contribution was awarded at least three times as many points as normal.

Wikipedians who enjoy friendly competition may be interested in participating in April's wikification drive. While wikifying an article is typically not considered "significant work" such that it can be claimed for WikiCup points, such gnomish work is often invaluable in keeping articles in shape, and is typically very helpful for new writers who may not be familiar with formatting norms.

A quick reminder: now, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only.
