AWB Citation editing

Hi. Your AWB editing at [1] italicized various website names in the citations. As far as I know, website names should not be in italics, so please do not italicize them. --Odie5533 (talk) 03:04, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - that page uses the parameter |work = foo, which is italiced by default (see Template:Cite web#Examples). Consider using the publisher parameter instead.  An optimist on the run! 07:40, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It is italicized by default, but if you then put the site name in italics in the parameter it will render without italics. In many cases the publisher is not the same as the work, so I don't think it should go in the publisher parameter. --Odie5533 (talk) 07:52, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
How you use the template is up to you, but AWB will strip the italic quotes away by default. I'll try to skip this page if I run over it again before it hits the main page, but bear in mind that other people using AWB may do the same thing.  An optimist on the run! 07:55, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Optimist on the run. Thanks for the check over the Kachin Conflict page but your edits also deleted some important information that I had found and wanted to keep there (e.g. that the Arakan Army is also an armed group fighting there, and that the U.S. dept. of state and the UN have commented on the use of airstrikes there). Also some of the sources from the reference section were also lost in your cleaning so I've just undone everything and I'll go back now and make the spelling changes and things like that that you added. Thanks for run by! Cheers! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hazelmelba2 (talkcontribs) 08:20, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see that the edit in question (before/after) removed any information from the article. It merely cleaned up a duplicate ref, fixed a spelling error and cleaned up a couple of minor spacing errors.  An optimist on the run! 08:55, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Belated Happy New Year with a Toast!

Here's a toast to the host
Of those who edit wiki near and far,
To a friend we send a message, "keep the data up to par".
We drink to those who wrote a lot of prose,
And then they whacked a vandal several dozen blows.
A toast to the host of those who boast, the Wikipedians!

No problem!  An optimist on the run! 11:29, 13 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you and...

Thanks for your explanation of DMY versus MDY. The only problem is, the pages I worked on back when I started got tagged "Needs to be Day Month Year" even though the articles I started on were within the U.S. I wrote the editor who changed dates in the article and they sent me to the page about dates, saying that the top format is preferred (e.g. "9 September 2011"). So, with that as direction, I have been doing it that way for nearly seven years. Yesterday was the first time ever that anyone said the opposite and/or reverted my work to the opposite. I'm astonished because I have watched dozens of editors (and bots) change MDY dates to DMY over last seven years, this is the first one to go back the other way. In this part of the U.S. DMY format is standard. I do not know about the rest of the U.S. or some old manual of style, but the local articles are for the most part done with DMY. If a date is putting MDY some bot or European editor goes through and changes them or tags "needs DMY" and leaves. This bothers me because I really don't want to see endless date fiddling for no reason other than some U.S. chauvinism on an old school date format. I would feel the same way if someone were arguing that all U.S. articles should have inches, feet, pints, gallons, ounces, pounds, rods or chains instead of metric measure - or worse, that they always had to appear first in the "convert" template! That would be hopelessly old fashioned! Thank you for letting me know, now I'm feeling frustrated again about Wiki and that people will be wasting hours of effort piddling around with the order of dates and extra commas, potentially creating typographical errors in facts, instead of cooperatively working on more substantive aspects of the project. Going back (Adminstats)

Remember your request to have me disable the block to non-admin accounts on TParis' talk page. There is now a work around to restoring adminstats to your alternate account. Simply give it the account creator flag and Cyberbot I will re-enable adminstats for that account. A recent change has now allowed me to add the accountcreator group to the task for the ACCers, such as myself, who wish to keep track, on wiki, of how many accounts they created, which is allowed per bot policy.—cyberpower ChatOnline 03:51, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea! Thanks for the suggestion.  An optimist on the run! 07:44, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

And somehow I just broke the entire script. :P—cyberpower ChatOnline 13:41, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry - I realised you were working on it when Pek's user creations shot up by ten million! I've taken the stats off my use page for the time being, but you can still see them at User:Optimist on the run/stats. Thanks for trying to fix it.  An optimist on the run! 13:45, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Since I have to go somewhere, and because willow won't let me kill the task, I have temporarily disabled adminstats before it starts going about blanking pages. The script should be fixed now, but I won't run it until I have time to supervise it. :P—cyberpower ChatOnline 13:48, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Error

I was just wondering if I was the only one facing the problem of Wikimedia Error when editing WCML South. Also on that note, do you know of any icons that can simplify many of the Bakerloo features? I love the limitations of RDT. Simply south...... catching SNOWballs for just 6 years 15:46, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that works as it looks like the Bakerloo is in tunnel under the Watford DC which is not what happens. I wonder if this should work better. Simply south...... catching SNOWballs for just 6 years 20:47, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding opting out wikilove messages

Hello there, I see you asked in the wikilove talk page if there is any way to opt out to these kind of messages, based on your question I've created this {{Template:NoWikiLove}}. Regards Eduemoni↑talk↓ 06:54, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nice idea, but unfortunately these "header" type notices hide my links in classic skin. Thanks anyway. An optimist on the run!   08:34, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I can add parametrization in which you determine the margin or the position of it, if you want me to do so, just leave a message here. Regards Eduemoni↑talk↓ 15:27, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest, I don't think I'm likely to use it. It's only a request, rather than a method of blocking out messages, and my fears that it would turn my user pages into a sea of "likes" seems to have been unfounded anyway. Or maybe it's simply that nobody loves me ;-) An optimist on the run!   15:40, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You're quite right. Comment redacted per WP:NSA. An optimist on the run!   06:47, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Optimist. After you posted on my talk page this morning, I replied to you and assumed the matter was put to rest. But then, amazingly, instead of just moving on, Guy Macon inexplicably came to my talk page and posted this harrassing comment and edit summary. I then replied, explained that I saw no reason to pursue the matter any more, and asked him politely to "please not post on my talk page again".

However, I just discovered that he ignored my request by using the guise of striking his prior comments so that he could post this harassing edit summary. I of course reverted it. I'm sure he will say something to the effect of "Well, I didn't actually post on his talk page; I just struck my comments".

So he reported me for my WP:SHOUT-based removal of his bolding, you took care of it by posting a note to me, I replied by telling you that "I will be more delicate in handling comments that I feel are shouted or uncivil", and that should have been the end of the matter. Yet he chose, not once, but two times after you and I resolved the matter, to come to my talk page and post his mocking comments and edit summaries. There's no doubt in my mind that his purpose in doing this was so that his two condescending edit summaries would appear on my talk page's revision history page for others to always see.

Also, please note that he posted this message in the AN/I thread two minutes after posting his second message on my talk page.

I feel that his actions are a clear violation of the harassment policy, which says that "trying to display material the user may find annoying or embarrassing in their user space is a common form of harassment" and that the "policy is aimed to protect victims of genuine harassment which is meant to cause distress to the user, such as repeated and unwanted correspondence or postings".

I think you'll agree that he should never have come to my talk page in the first place (after you had already handled the matter), and especially not the second time after I asked him nicely to stay away. Obviously, he wanted to cause me distress. Apparently, his filing a report at AN/I and then you talking to me about it wasn't good enough for him. He had to come to my talk page and unnecessarily provoke me instead of just moving on and leaving it in your hands. Based on all this, I would respectfully ask that you please issue some sort of sanction to him for this harassment violation, and make it clear to him that he is not to come to my talk page again. I would also ask if you could please delete his two comments from my talk page's revision history. Thank you. --76.189.111.199 (talk) 21:48, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

DYK nomination of Denbigh Hall railway station

Hello! Your submission of Denbigh Hall railway station at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! BlueMoonset (talk) 01:58, 1 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

During the article you said there were no other images available of Denbigh Hall of that time. Well, I have found one and also someone on Flickr has a modern image. I don't know about the copyright though. Flickr and National Railway Museum. 13:22, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
Hi - thanks for finding that old image. When I've got a bit more time I may upload it as it'll obviously be PD-old. I'm hoping to get down there, hopefully next Saturday, as I've been wanting to visit Bletchley Park for some time, so I can kill two birds with one stone. As far as the article goes, I think the final paragraph is correct: whilst there are contemporary images of the bridge, I doubt there are any of the station itself. Golf

Just a note, as I don't consider it worth reverting. Oxford and Dictionary.com both give a verb form as well. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:31, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I must admit I looked it up in Wiktionary after I'd changed it in case it was an obscure form (or is it American usage?) - you're right. I've never heard it in that context before though, and it just looked wrong to me. An optimist on the run!   06:38, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • That seems correct. Nobody would argue the accuracy of play golf (although, personally I'd never use it). I tend to say I will golf, I am/was golfing, I golfed yesterday, do you want to go golfing?, etc. Ryan Vesey 07:03, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The article itself says Sark was not large enough for a golf course - this seems to be the least ambiguous/Engvar way of phrasing it. An optimist on the run!   07:11, 2 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notability

I think you are missing what notability actually is. A notable subject will always be notable, short stub or FA length article. Notability is decided by sources which exist beyond articles and "now meets criteria" isn't true, it always met criteria but it hadn't been expanded. Just you haven't the experience as a researcher to look beyond articles as they are at the time and what could be added to them with sources. A kind word of advice, if you come across an article which you think is questionable always look in google books. Ask the editor to expand it or try expanding it yourself using sources you find.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 20:28, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't say the article wasn't notable - I said there was no evidence of notability. For some classes of article, this would have met speedy deletion criteria - though not for films, which is why I added a PROD instead. Normally this would have gone one of two ways - either an attempt to improve the article, or Wikipedia would have been rid of a worse-that-useless (IMO) one-liner stub. As it was, your de-prodding, with only the vague explanation "I don't do PRODS" and no evidence that you intended to improve the article, left me with no option but to take it to AFD. An optimist on the run!   20:40, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In that case you've made an error of judgement, we don't delete notable articles. That the article is lacking when sources exist is not a valid deletion rationale. If you want an editor to expand it, if you showed them some respect and simply asked if they could try to expand it you might not have wasted your time with prods and AFDs.I knew what the result would be as soon as I saw your prod.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 20:48, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I stand by what I said above - as the article stood at the time I came across it [2], there was not the slightest hint of evidence that the film was important in any way. You stated in the AfD that it was by a notable producer, yet this was not mentioned in the article. If it's important, why didn't you mention it when you created the article? Why do you expect other editors to run round finding sources for your articles? Try hitting random article a few times (which is how I found this article) - you'll find that Wikipedia has too many one-line articles that are little more than definitions. I'm not a deletionist, but I don't believe these give a good impression of Wikipedia to an average reader. Better (in my opinion again) to delete them, preferably uncontroversially as a prod, and if necessary recreated by an editor who's willing to make a bit more effort in creating the article in the first place. I've found from experience that too often requests to expand or clean-up an article just fall on deaf ears. I apologise if that doesn't apply to you, but you must admit a quick prod in the back (pun fully intended) had the desired affect. I appreciate you have a different opinion to me, but please allow me to have mine. An optimist on the run!   21:06, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, all should be expanded into fuller articles, but I don't think short stubs are the biggest content sin. Worse to me are those long bloated ones with no sources and haphazard poorly written material making them unreadable. At least short stubs are clean and ready for anybody to be expanded. Let's face it, most wikipedia articles are inadequate!♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 21:42, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi you deleted a page in my sandbox, and I understand that it was offensive to its subject but it was just a joke among me and my friends. We had no intention of publishing it and I was wondering if it is possible to get the article back. I wouldn't continue to edit it on Wikipedia, but i would like to finish it in a word document. My intentions weren't to discredit Wikipedia as a serious encyclopedia, and the reason I used it for this task were because I liked the format.
