[edit]

Hi Nichalp, Just saw your post on the British India page. Sorry to hear you're not feeling well. Hope you feel better soon. Btw, have you read Salim Ali's Fall of a sparrow? If you haven't, it might be fun to read while you recuperate (has BNHS stuff too). By the way, I liked the picture you posted of the Bombay Presidency soldier. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 22:02, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Take a relaxing wikibreak and get well soon. Reading suggestions, hmm, I'm reading Obama's "Dream's of my father" and I quite like it, and Hesse's Steppenwolf (it was the COTW for the novels wikiproject and since it was on my list of must reads .....), but, since we have a Burma, er Myanmar, involvement, may I suggest "Under the Dragon" by Rory Maclean or "Finding George Orwell in Burma" by Emma Larkin? For something quick and unconnected with India/Burma, I just finished "A Most Wanted Man" by Le Carre, a bit disappointing in the end but overall a good read. (Unfortunately, my Byculla station picture turned out to be a sketch by an unknown artist in "The Illustrated London News of 1854. Not sure what the copyright situation of an 1854 sketch is likely to be.)--Regents Park (bail out your boat) 02:38, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nichalp,

I have responded to your striking of my !vote in this RfA. Could you please advise how you wish me to proceed? - Richard Cavell (talk) 02:59, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nichalp, I wish to apologize for my !vote. I must say that I feel sick. I had no idea that my !vote was so unacceptable. I have resigned as an administrator. - Richard Cavell (talk) 09:12, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nichalp. I've left a question for you on that RFA because I found your action quite surprising. That may be due to a misunderstanding on my part, in which case I'd be grateful for clarification. Thanks! Olaf Davis | Talk 10:41, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nichalp, I have to say that your striking of Richard Cavell's vote in this RfA is completely inappropriate. Please undo it immeddiately. I personally do not find the logic in Richard's vote convincing, but the vote was not friviolous or obviously invalid. He did give a reasoned explanation for his vote. The closing crat can discount this vote if they find it unpersuasive, but actually striking out a reasoned RfA vote by a Wikipedian in good standing is completely unacceptable. Sorry, I did not see the note on your userpage that you are ill. The RfA in question is closed now. However, Richard Cavell still intends to resign his adminship as he stated in a recent post at his talkpage[1]. I hope that when you come back you can talk him out of it. This incident is certainly not worth anyone resigning anything. Nsk92 (talk) 03:09, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA Nominations

[edit]

Hey there. I noticed you nominated four Fort articles for GA. I've looked at them all, and they're all extremely sparse on content. I don't believe there's a limit on how short a GA article can be, but I don't think they could be Good Articles in their present state. Perhaps you could merge all four of them into one article, if they're related at all? Skinny87 (talk) 17:04, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I see your problem; I've had the same issue m'self more than a few times. It was only a passing thought, though, and I imagine they'll all pass a GA Review, although I don't think they'll be able to go any higher due to lack of content. Nice work, by the way! Maps of India

[edit]

Hi Nichalp. An editor has brought up an issue concerning the depiction of disputed territories on maps of India on NPOV/N. I noticed you had raised the same point at Wikimedia a few weeks ago with the author of the maps, but there does not seem to have been any progress since then. Could we raise this elsewhere, or do you know someone who could work on and correct the files? Best, Jayen466 14:58, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nichap Bhai, thank you a million for fixing the map. Now it is fair and square. Please replace this map in ALL places that use that silly Non NPOV map by Ssolbergj. Thanks again! 218.111.30.197 (talk) 11:03, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I never did anything. Ssolbergj himself fixed the map. =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:42, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just synchronicity, I did not do anything either, nor did Ssolbergj, I think. Looking at the file history, the correction was made by Shibo77, and has now been undone, unfortunately, by Deepak, who claims the scale was wrong (it looked more or less okay to me ...). So right now it seems we're back to the non-NPOV version. But I'm sure we'll get it right eventually ... Cheers, Jayen466 12:43, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, guess I missed that out. Names were similar at a glance. :) I was quite surprised to see Deepak (talk · contribs) editing on Wikipedia again, he quit editing WP, looks like he is working on commons: these days. Nice to see him back. =Nichalp «Talk»= 13:54, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

District maps of West Bengal

[edit]

Hi. I have saved the locator map, as it looks authentic. I am trying to remove the rivers and neighbouring countries to get an outline for districts. While saving the file (it was .svg as shown in WP), when I saved it as .svg, Inkscape was not able to open it. But, when trying to save it as .png, Inkscape can open it. [edit]

Due to continued non-sense on Wikipedia, all images of Indian naval ensign have been removed. I am safe, thanks

[edit]

Hi everyone. Thanks for your wishes and concerns. I am safe and sound, but I had a harrowing time the past few days hearing the AK-47 gunfire and grenades being lobbed at close quarters. Four hours before the attack, I was at the vicinity of the VT station, walking under the same bridge they took, and in the lane in which they were later captured by CCTV. I was also close to the Cama Hospital, little did I know that it would be attacked some four hours later. I was supposed to be at the VT station later that evening, returning home approximately between 10-11 pm, which would have been the time of the attack, but because I got held up somewhere else, I was spared from the conflict zone. Later, at about 10:45 I heard online reports of some shooting at VT station, at that time attributed to gang shooting. I then switched on the TV and followed the news reports, which at that time was very sketchy. I saw a large group of journalists gathered a few metres near my house, all looking towards VT station. This was the outer cordon limit that the police had set. From my home, I clicked a photo of the journalists, (it was blurred and dark, so didn't come out well), and went inside in disappointment to keep myself informed. About ten minutes later I heard a commotion outside and some people running my way. Two seconds later, a series of machine gunshots rang out and I could hear people running helter skelter. (The shots were fired by the terrorists in the hijacked police van). I would have to add that for a short period of time, my building would have been in the direct line of fire and range of the AK-47 guns. We stayed inside, with the doors closed, and kept low so as to avoid any ricocheting bullets. About five minutes later we heard the news reports of the incident, including reports that the terrorists had moved ahead. At that time, we had assumed that they were on foot, which could mean they could sneak into any dark alleys around my area and create mayhem. 20 minutes later we heard they were apprehended, but was still unsure. I could still hear grenades go off intermittently, and machine gun fire away in the distance. I stayed up the entire night watching the news to keep myself updated of the situation.

I must add that all the mentioned locations in the attack range between 100 metres to 3 kilometres of where I stay, so I have been there many a time. All the people I personally know of are safe, but some people we (my family) know of did not make it... I personally am shaken by this incident, any sudden loud sound is likely to make me jump. I could feel the force of the grenades and bombs going off at the Taj even though I am located some 2 km away. Such was the force of the bombs. The police came around and asked us to keep indoors as much as possible yesterday due to rumours flying high. I'm currently not in a mood to edit wikipedia much. =Nichalp «Talk»= 11:13, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good to hear from you again, Nichalp. I am sorry to hear of the casualties amongst your family's acquaintances: please accept my sympathies. Lakes in Bangalore

[edit]

Hi! Nichalp

Bombay is in the grip of terrorists. I hope you are safely away from the troubled areas.I wish you well.

I have expanded the above article, hopefully more than five times, but I could not exactly assess how much of the text portion only has been expanded. I have fully followed the tutorials you gave me on editing. I am sure a further editing by you may be as least as it can be. In case the expansion is accreptable for a DYK Hook, I would appreciate your nominating it for me. In fact, if all my added text from the time I created the article are added it may be more than five times expansion.I will suggest three alterantive hooks if you consider that it may be DYK acceptable. Basically the expansion is on management aspect as a policy (Public-private sector participation) which has failed ,iserably resulitng in policy reversal and would be a lesson to others that "Lake is a Common Property Resorce not to be meddled with for private gains".

Incidentally, my 25th DYK on Pulicat Lake was accepted.--Nvvchar (talk) 15:13, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Recent Mumbai Tragedy

[edit]

Just came across your page and was a little shocked to hear that you were caught up in the recent Mumbai tragedy. Hope you are doing alright. Best wishes. Wiki Raja (talk) 11:37, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Truly Nichalp. These things are so sad. Why can't people just get along with each other? I truly hope you and your family are okay. Let us know if we can help in any way.RlevseTalk 12:10, 30 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Currency conversion

[edit]

Hi Nichalp. Glad to hear that you are OK. I found Template:INRConvert, but am in need of a Japanese Yen to U.S. Dollar conversion template, perhaps one that optionally uses {{Inflation}} to adjust for inflation. if easy enought, would you consider creating Template:Currency conversion by modifying the code from Template:INRConvert. It would be nice if the currency conversion template could be used for any money type and go both ways. Thanks. -- Suntag 17:27, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Techno-park-logo.svg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Techno-park-logo.svg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:20, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SVG images

[edit]

Hi Nichalp. I am glad that you are doing ok. Hope you are feeling better.

As per your earlier suggestion, I had created SVG images for the Carnatic music scales - Melakarta and some Janya too. I dug around a bit and learnt adding Tamil script to SVG images, etc. Tips from Commons village pump also helped. So, I have finished about 80 scales in English and Tamil and uploaded them to Commons. I have modified half the English pages to start using the SVG in place of GIF.

I manually coded first SVG and used it along with Microsoft Excel to "generate" the 72 parent scales first. Then with minor changes I was able to "generate" the same for Tamil too. Now that I have perfected this, I can do the same in about 2-3 hours in other scripts, like Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Devanagari (if anyone needs them). Probably Malayalam folks need them first, as I can see the Melakarta ragam articles being linked one by one to the English and Tamil articles.

Thank you very much for the valuable suggestion, as it saves lot of time and also is simple to understand, expand (in size), reuse for other "derived scales", etc. You are a star!!! VasuVR (talk, contribs) 14:34, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

YOB instead of DOB. Check instructions

[edit]

Hi. Concerning this edit of yours, I would like to inform you that for article pages we use Category:Year of birth missing instead of Category:Date of birth missing. If, there is a reason to add the latter, please add it to the Talk page instead but first read WP:PRIVACY and the instructions in the categories above. Thanks. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:25, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, excellent article on amateur radio in India and worthy of Featured Article status. Jim, K7JEB (talk) 14:09, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nice to see the amateur radio article on main page. The copyedit of Vithoba has ended. You had upgraded the article status to A, which was reverted and had asked SandyGeorgia for inputs on the nomination failure as per Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics. Can you look at the article for FAC concerns, keeping in view SandyGeorgia's comments? Thanks. --Redtigerxyz Talk 15:05, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
