Redirect for Primary cortex

[edit]

Hi, LoSchizzatore, my username is KDS4444 and I am the person responsible for changing your recent article, Primary cortex, into a redirect. I did this for a few reasons. The main reason was that I could not find evidence that the primary cortex was a subject not already well covered in other Wikipedia articles. I am not a neuroscientist, but to the best of my understanding there are several primary cortices in the brain, each associated with a different region (the primary somatosensory cortex; the primary visual cortex; the primary auditory cortex; the primary motor cortex, etc.). To the extent that this is indeed true (maybe you know better than I?) each of these cortices should be covered in its primary Wikipedia article (Somatosensory cortex, Visual cortex) rather than as a standalone article, because the subject is really a subunit of each of those larger topics. Within the article as you wrote it, you even stated, "there is no such thing as the primary cortex, since the primary regions of different systems are geographically and functionally clearly distinct." This is a perfect reason for not having a distinct article on the subject, as near as I can tell.

There were other cues to me that the article was unlikely to be worth a standalone article. One was the use in your opening sentence of, "...is a term for..." That phrase is one that Wikipedia articles try to avoid, preferring instead to simply state "is". I also noted that you have no userpage, and that you have a very short edit history. Also, I was doubtful that there could possibly be a new article on a subject as already well-covered as the human brain. Finally, you only provided two references, both to the same book, which indicated a very narrow reference scope. While none of those things by itself or even collectively meant that the article should be turned into a redirect they all signaled to me, "Have a closer look", and upon doing so, I decided a redirect was an appropriate move.

However, if you disagree with me on this point, we can start an open discussion on the topic through a process called request for comment. This will create a discussion forum in which any number of other editors can consider whether or not the article should exist as a standalone piece or be redirected to cerebral cortex. Once that discussion reaches a consensus, all editors are expected to abide by it unless something significant about the subject happens to change.

I realize that this is your first article, and I hope all of this doesn't throw cold water on you. We have a policy about not biting the newbies, and I do not want to have been found violating it! Please do not feel bitten, and please don't let any of this discourage you from continuing to participate. I think that your article was generally well-written, just not on a topic that warranted a new article, and we can always use skilled writers. Anyhow, let me know your thoughts. I will place your talk page on my watch list and will be able to see if/ when you respond, yes? I hope to hear from you soon. KDS4444 (talk) 00:38, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
