Hitler Youth

[edit]

Hey Kierzek,

I saw you bio and I really appreciate the approach you take to editing articles on Wikipedia. I noticed that you were making edits to the Hitler Youth page and I was wondering how you undertake making edits to that page which has significant issues, including sections that have 'citation needed.' Do you recommend that other users edit the Wikipedia page now that it is semi-protected? Also, I'm new, and I wanted to know how you find sources when editing, or if there is a specific way you go about adding new information to an article in an ethical manner. Thanks, Grace1701 Grace1701 (talk) 17:45, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the post. I have many years of experience in research and writing; in my day job and as to subjects I write and edit on herein, I did some research work for World War II magazine and research and writing for Uboat.net and used to write and post on several different boards before coming over to Wikipedia eight years ago. So part of it is that experience; but we all have to start somewhere. I would suggest first reading Wikipedia:Five pillars and then watch and look at some editing by experienced editors.
Going back to the field I write and edit in, I have a personal library which I do update and replace from time to time (most are listed on my Library sub-page). At times I have gone to the main branch of the city library to check out books and I have used Google Books at times (although often it is not complete and only gives you snippets). So I review and use RS books on the subject I am editing. With all this said, as I told another recently, even for experienced editors, editing pages on Nazi Germany can be difficult at times as it is an area where sensitivity, neutrality and careful research are vital (see WP:NPOV and WP:RS citing). And some of the articles are B rated or GA rated already so, there is not much to add but for minor tweaks. Other articles need work and improvement, such as Hitler Youth; that is why I worked on it lately as you noted. It is in better shape now, but could use some more work. It is a matter of time allocation. So, carry on and start editing; I would start with things you find interesting and know something about and then branch out. There is a whole world to edit about.
